is anyone familiar with this scenery? this is a painting by my grandmother Elli Haft who lived in germany specifically munich. i believe this was painted maybe during the 1920s? or maybe it was after the war. I also can’t make out what the back reads. i know it’s a bit of a reach but i’m going to europe next year and would like to put this place on my bucket list
Somewhere in Wasserburg am Inn if I had to guess. Has a river like in the picture and similar architecture - also very close to Munich.
My first reaction: It’s gotta be on Lago di Garda. Very popular destination for artists from Munich over the centuries. Still is.
But on second look it’s almost too grey a scene for Italy but the type of buildings doesn’t really shout Germany either. The roof tiles rather look Mediterranean.
The writing is difficult but it starts with Rigen…. Or Regen…. But I doubt it is Regensburg. Maybe some one can check it.
Lake Garda is wider than the body of water in the picture. The street could be paved with pebbles; while it looks like cobblestone to me, it might just be that the artist didn't feel like painting all the small pebbles. But this doesn't look like Malcesine either.
Note that the architecture in Malcesine is not allowed to be modernized, so at least that village at Lake Garda should still look the same, if the scene was from there.
Sure, the lake is wider, but it doesn’t have to be a view across the lake.
But I don’t think it’s fictional. Gotta be somewhere..
Could it be the old city in Augsburg? I remember it having that vibe when I visited, also close to Munich, and I think there was water too.
The building looks like a regular home, not a castle or submitting 6 else of cultural significance, so the old buildings are probably long gone now. But the obvious state of disrepair in the painting.
The statue (or monument) on the other bank or an island seems to be the center of the image, but I can correlate neither the name of a town but the name of a historic outdoor with the writing.
Is there a subreddit which deals with monuments? r/Denkmal dies not look very promising...

Wangen im Allgäu has two arches like that with a view of the river (Argen). Not an exact match though.
I would say Bamberg
My AI-Slop radar tells me to assume it’s fake. Two asymmetric enclosed skybridges in the same street? I doubt 1 of these exists anywhere. I have no doubt that Mediterranean style street is something grandma saw but artistic license is being used here.
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes. In my view, it's a sunny day when she sat in the hall or at the doorway of a town. Lunch is ready. She was expecting her grandson or granddaughter who was playing games in the field afar. When she waited, she was very excited to see this. It's really beautiful country-side scenery. You can feel the histrical sense everywhere from the wall, the window, and the window. She was happy feel the warm sunshine which adds to life to the plants by the window. When she turned her eyes to the doorway, she was amazed by the colorful and vivid scenery. Meanwhile someone was washing clothing by the pond cuz she could heard the sound of water flow. All the shade and sun makes perfect window picture taken depends where you are standing.
