Hello Guys,

Wednesday i was traveling to family in germany, and all of a sudden i came across the end of all restrictions sign, but i never saw a speedlimit-sign, but my navigation told me it was 100 km/h max (i just though it was tripping and thought the gps bugged a bit and the navigation thought i was on a country road) but then i came across the sign below, which made me think i missed a sign. But i cant find any speedlimit on either sides on the road when i follow the road through google streetview.

There was a passing restriction, but when that doesnt count anymore it always shows the truck and car in the white sign, and the all white sign is always speedlimit+ another restriction. Can anyone help me?

  • It is common that this sign is repeated to remind people that there wasn't any restriction.

especially if there is a intersection with a road that has a restriction. Because technically it can be assumed that the limit isn't on the new road but they want to remind people.

technically it can be assumed that the limit isn't on the new road

    Not only technically.

    Not only technically.

     No, you can't assume that:

    https://www.adac.de/verkehr/recht/verkehrsvorschriften-deutschland/geschwindigkeitsbeschraenkung-regeln-autobahn/

A speed limit, also called a section-based restriction, does not automatically end at the next intersection or junction. This applies even if the prohibition signs are not repeated afterward.

Because section-based restrictions are not repeated after every junction, a driver unfamiliar with the area cannot be accused of exceeding the speed limit or violating a no-overtaking rule if, after turning onto the road, they did not pass any traffic sign.

That's not common at all? I never ever have seen repetition of this sign just as a reminder for no restrictions. Vice versa: Once you enter for example a road with speed limit, the speed limit sign has to repeated, otherwhise, if you get a ticket, you can argue on not having been informed properly.

I just posted the maps link

As a German I think that's actually pretty considerate, because there's a lot of other things in our country where stuff is expected from people (esp. Tax stuff) where no one reminds you until it becomes an issue. 😅

  • The sign on Streetview is probably left over from the maintenance on the bridge in Mechernich. It was finished in Summer of 2023 and the Streetview photo is from September 2023. I usually exit there to go to my parents or other relatives in the area, so I barely ever see the signs behind the exit that you might've seen.

The end of all restrictions sign is still there today!

I would still assume it's been there because of the construction on the bridge. They didn't bother to remove it because it's not necessary 🤷‍♂️

  • It means that all restrictions are lifted, but it doesn't mean that there necessarily was a speed limit in place.

It might refer back to this minimum distance sign for trucks, that only applied to the bridge you just finished crossing.

But that sign automatically expires after the distance stated on the sign.

As OP's navigation thought there is a 100km/h zone, I suspect they changed the signs before the bridge.

But why leave the end of all restrictions sign then? XD that makes me (and probably others) paranoid because the navigation also tells you there was a speed limit, which makea you think you missed a sign

It is probably Occam's razor: It was forgotten and not removed with the other signs.

That would explain it, thanks, good to know i’m not going crazy…! I never break the speed limit so I was very upset i couldnt find any signs regarding the speedlimit:)

  • I'd say you are wrong. The passing limit is also affected by this sign, so passing is now allowed again. The truck and car in the "end sign" means specifically this is now allowed again. But for example a speed limit could still be active. So this sign also exists with the former speed limit for example. So this sign just allows everything that was limited before. Could be speed, passing by trucks or passing from everyone.

  • The 100 km/h speed limit was there only, when the bridge was under reconstruction and damaged. Now, since the reconstruction work is completed, the speed limit was removed. So, there is no more speed limit of 100 km/h.

Source: I drive this motorway multiple times a week.

Great! So that sign is still there, but there is no speedlimit anymore? That would explain why my navigation thought it was 100 and the sign being there:)

before the bridge, is a sign that trucks aren't allowed to pass each other. It's referring to that (source, drivers license teacher)

  • The bridge before the interchange has a restriction for trucks.

It also looks freshly renovated, so it might have been a limitation in place in the past which is now gone. Which would also explain your navigation system messing up, there might have been a 100km/h zone across the bridge.

  • I traveled across entire Germany many times, and often found this case. Never got a problem, maybe it's just a reminder.

  • Yes but the keep 50m distance ends after 600m so that would be double right? And if only the passing restriction ends it would be white sign with the truck and car. Also my navigation said 100km/g so that combination made me confused

But i’m probably looking into it too much and you’re probably right:)
