I've been a long time fan of the Book of the New Sun by Wolfe and had only really read that work of his.

I just started reading The Knight thinking the prose would be similar but the epistolary writing caught me completely off guard. I really like it a lot even if it's somewhat vague at times (I assume on purpose).

That's one of Wolfe's main moves. He's always looking for a way to explain why the narrator is telling you this story.

    My recommendation is keep readin'.

After reading Wolfe, this is something I struggle with in other first person narrative novels. I’m always lacking myself, why is this narrator telling me this story and why does it matter that someone reads it? It’s my favorite thing that he does and does so much establishing work for setting and character.

  • Start at the beginning and read until the end. 👍

  • It threw me off as well!
The writing style seemed almost bad at the beginning, but it does change over the course of the book and pretty quickly too. So if the first few chapters aren't landing for you keep going and it will click.
