It would have been a dream come true if "The Book of the New Sun" had received an animated adaptation like "Vampire Hunter D" in the 80s/90s. In fact, ,the desire to create fanart arose basically because, while reading BOTNS, I could imagine what "Studio Madhouse" or another team of japanese creators could have done with the work. Inspired by this, I designed a poster for what would be an imaginary third film in a Japanese-animated tetralogy.
Anime is probably the only format you could pull it off with. Maybe some day...
There was a pretty popular Japanese translation of BotNS iirc.
Those Amano covers are just *chef's kiss*
Like as in manga or novel format?
You mean the popular translation? It was a straight up translation of the series, not an adaptation of any kind, as far as I know.
Ya, the translation. You had me thinking there was a graphic novel out there lol
I am working on a BotNS animation. I'll post when finished
I actually think a surreal French animation would work better. The frame should never be literal.
I'd go with an omnibus in the style of "The Animatrix"... Several directors doing their thing.
Check out Peter Chung's Alexander series, it captures that alien ancient future vibe really well
Ala Moebius?
That's a perfect style.
I'm all in for a stop-motion animation version
It can only be animation with narration. I feel like darker, grittier animation, 80-style, would be good, with a French-Canadian director.
The narration would be a great idea.
I also thought these books would be best adapted to the screen as mature anime
would you do a print of this? it’s so cool
If there's enough interest I could set up like a INPRNT shop or something? I've opened online stores before but they had such little movement that I kinda lost interest in "selling" stuff.
you’re hitting a nicher fandom with a fantastic portrayal, it’s rare. awesome work, my boyfriend and i geeked out about it :)
Thanks a lot!
I am definitely interested!
Get Kawajiri to do it. ASAP
Bring back the Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust staff: Kawajiri directing, Amano character art, Takeshi Koike key animation.
The "Bloodlust" designs are inspired by Yoshitaka Amano, but the actual designer is Yutaka Minowa, who would be perfect for the job.
Cool but you should definitely not be able to see folds in the cloak.
I debated a lot with myself about how to depict the fugilin without resorting to just "black". I decided to go with very dark, flat grey. Also, I liked how the inks turned out and wanted them to remain slightly visible.
I would prefer the flat because that’s the illusion it’s intended to convey
Man this is dope as fuck
Real kino right here
I would buy this tbh. 18 x 24 or even 24 x 36 would look amazing.
Vampire Hunter D was so surprisingly good (I watched it on a whim a year ago and now it's one of my fav animated films); a BoTNS movie or show in this style would be SO GOOD.
So sick. I'm glad I'm not the only person that thinks BotNS fits the 80s anime aesthetic well.
I would buy this
It would be so cool.
I also think Book of the Long Sun would be an awesome anime.
Kerning seems off in the red main title font (too much space between shi and i, for example).
Thanks for the observation, I'm not formally trained on design so those details usually escape me.
I enjoy the Pokémon Unown on the sword for some reason
What I wouldn't give for this 😩 of course assuming it's not a complete butchering like the earthsea anime was.
I'm working on it! Stay tuned
Wait, there is an anime of this? Did they do the series?
No. This poster is kind of a "What If?" scenario
dude this is SO well done
I have also been working on an anime poster. This looks great. I think Anime would be the perfect medium
