To my surprise I bumped into the same flock again! This little guy still seems kind of shy and slow in traveling than the rest. I did witness it fly twice but not that high, just to catch up with the rest. It was grazing the grass.
Not flavored preferably, but whatever it can actually eat. You know best since you’ve seen it eat/drink, right? Cat kibbles might be the biggest/easiest to get a grip on, but I gave options in case it struggles or doesn’t like something. If you get bothered by other geese or birds, you can throw something cheap out for them and try to toss the more nutritional stuff near sick goose. If it’s an injury it’s obv still alive and living, so any little boost helps. Wry neck can be helped with vitamins (selenium), but this is a wild goose and it won’t be easy bandaging etc. Botulism you would notice progressive paralysis, it’s not contagious but I haven’t had any luck bringing them back from paralysis, and it seems to only affect one out of a bunch (maybe that one has lower immunity?). If it’s avian flu the high pathology one=dead goose and multiple birds affected. Low pathology=sickness but possible to recover from and that bird becomes a carrier. Sorry for the long post, if rescues blow you off, you’re doing the best thing by trying to feed him properly and checking on him - thank you for helping a gooso out 🥰
I have seen it eat! It grazes the grass and took sips out of puddles from the ground. It also quickly accepted the bread I threw for it, because that’s all I have unfortunately at the moment, but the rest of the geese knew what I was doing and ate it, too. I’m kind of scared of them when they get aggressive with one another, which some were, when I would attempt to feed them the two times I have. This is my second time meeting the flock. I’m usually only over this area every other weekend. Do you have advice on how to contact rehab :)?
Getting bread is not the doomsday the internet makes it out to be, no worries ;) I find cat food to be great for waterfowl: high protein, corn based with fishy flavors. It does sink, though, so in a lake it’ll go under fast. On the ground it’s just fine. The oatmeal flakes might be harder for this guy to eat because he has to have good eyesight and aim. Np throwing oats out for the others and toss kibbles at sick goose, you can deceive the others for awhile that way lol. I can’t help with rehab/rescue, I live in a place far from those, bird vets or people who care tbh, I have to fend for myself.
Please contact a local rehabber(s) and share these photos. This doesn’t look right. A rehabber will know what to do. ❤️🩹
I’ll try to see what I can do!
In the meantime you can always help add some protein and calories to its diet, cat food, oatmeal, peas are some favorites and way better than bread.
Thank you for the suggestions! I didn’t know they could have oatmeal. Plain oatmeal or flavored oatmeal is fine?
