So instead of typing it normally, where it's just another word in a sentence they replace a letter with an @ so it not only draws attention to the word, it also makes anyone who has a word filtering browser extension (as in someone who would actually be triggered or offended) see it.
Imagine if we did that with every traumatic word bruh. abus3, bully1ing, k1ll, d3pr3ss1on, etc. It just seems like it's ironically trivializing the actual issues that are complicated with said act, and as you said, doesn't even work.
