For context a nuzlocke is a pokemon chllange in which you have to play through a game with a ruleset that consists of "if a pokemon faints it's dead and you can't use it agian" and "you must catch the first pokemon you find in an area" but these rules aren't set in stone and the community encourages new rules/clauses. The most popular clasuses are "every pokemon must be nicknamed so you get attached to them making their death more impactful" and "you can't use items in battle other then pokeballs, held items are fine"
Additionally this dude's set of "necessary" rules is incorrect since the "pokemon must be nicknamed" rule isn't even used by people like Pokemon Chllanges, Captain Kid, etc.

Flashbacks to the Jaiden Animations Platinum run and how pissed some people got that she tried the E4 again because she got fucked over by RNG the first time (she even acknowledged that she didn't actually win the run, she just wanted to see if she could), and pChal basically told people in his chat to shut up about it.
Seriously, it’s made-up, self-imposed rules, specifically designed to make the game more fun. This is akin to people raging about Easy Modes existing.
Pchal basically said the abut this in his reaction video to TheOdd1sOut first nuzlock as well when they caught the zubat after abra fled. Basically said ‘real hardcore nuzlockers aren’t going to care and anyone that does isn’t really part of the nuzlock community (If anyone wants the timestamp starts at about 6min)
you're 100% correct!
Personally, I only consider it a real Nuzlocke run if you spend the run hallucinating one or more of your Pokémon as Lost characters.
It's only a real nuzlocke if you have a Nuzleaf named John Locke.
I only consider it a real nuzlocke if you promise that your hallucinations of the Pokémon as Lost characters are 100% nude! ONE article of clothing on ANY of the hallucinations at ANY point and it DOESN’T COUNT.
It's only a Nuzlocke run if you play it in the Nuzlocke region of Kanto, otherwise it's just sparkling permadeath.
The person in the first screen shot has a point though.
From the inception of “Nuzlocke” as a gameplay style the core rules are pretty fuckin clear; if a Pokémon dies you can’t use it again, and you need to capture the first Pokémon you find in each area and that’s the one you have to use.
It’s pretty fuckin silly to say “I did a nuzlocke challenge but I decided to not obey one of the two most widely accepted rules of the challenge”. No, you didn’t do a nuzlocke, you just played the game lol. Nothing wrong with that, but words have definitions for a reason lol.
This week on "words mean things", I kinda agree with the guy. There are a few rules that define this particular challenge, and then any variation of those rules should just be called a Modified Nuzlocke.
But it's been 20 years since I played Pokémon, so I can't say I care about this.
Reminds me of runescape where people want variations of iron man and jadex does give a few. However then people complain about "iron man isn't fun. It should allow us to trade X, Y, and Z."
All I think is "don't play iron man then or make your own rules on your own account and stream it."
But humans want the prestige of a challenge without the challenge itself. I think telling me to use a different word for a well defined challenge makes sense.
I'd agree with him, if I believed for a moment he applied the same logic to runs that add extra-difficulty modifiers to the rules (I.E., no combat items). But I don't for a single second believe that.
"I play harder games and that's a sign of inherent value" is probably the dumbest thing.
Fuck it, just make the rule that between two people, the one who has a better time playing a game is the one who is engaging with it better. That makes sense compared to like "hurr durr this players say they want to play X but don't have the manly balls to actually play a kids game like that"
It's the same shit as people raising their noses at others using meta builds in Elden Ring. Or, God forbid, use summons *clutches pearls vigorously*
Well he's technically correct. (The best kind of correct).
If you change the rules you can't call it the same challenge. That's like me doing a brisk walk in my neighborhood and calling it a marathon.
Those 3 rules are pretty valid though....for a Hardcore Nuzlocke.
Just a nuzlocke? I don't really care. For the sake of content creators, it's nice to have some rules laid out but they usually open their videos with it. Juat so theres no misconceptions.
I mean, the Nuzlocke University website has 50 optional rules to both make a nuzlocke run either harder OR easier. It is all about what you restrict yourself to... A REAL nuzlocker acknowledges that the rules aren't hard and you can bend them in a way that's fair to you. It's just like people complaining about others "cheating" in singleplayer Minecraft.
I just wish the multibillion dollar company would release games with difficulty settings built in instead of releasing half assed games. They’re fine, but they should be great.
It's a meme/challenge category with a few core rules and whatever the hell you feel like doing. Just about every single person plays with some variation of the rules and isn't married to them like that.
The nickname rule is a great example in that it's so slow and a lot of people don't care. It's just as devastating to lose your top pokemon 20 hours in regardless of their name. Let's not waste 30 seconds at a time navigating that asinine menu over and over while you're playing.
I mean, as someone who watches a whole lot of streamers, I will say it's super frustrating to click on a stream or video because it says they're doing some specific kind of challenge run and then after getting emotionally invested it turns out they're compromising a bunch to make it easier. It's like a kind of clickbait, they get your attention with a challenge they're attempting but then they don't want to go through with it. Still, that's for people actually making content and trying to get your clicks. I think the issue in the screenshots is more about the lexical gap caused by not having easy names for every kind of challenge run, and so it's so much easier to just reach for the nearest familiar term to convey the vibe of what you're trying to do. So there's a big difference between trying to take credit for doing something hard and just wanting to casually communicate "this is the kind of way I have been playing the game". But there can be real frustration when some specific term is getting softened in common usage and it starts to result in no longer having a word that conveys the strict meaning any longer, and people push back against that. You kinda gotta read the room and pick the appropriate lexical register. But that's if you're trying not to be a dick and actually communicate, of course.
Nuzlocke hasn't had a proper definition for a long time now. Basically the only fixed thing is that your Pokémon are dead when they faint, and even that has optional rules to it to tweak it a bit.
I’m so confused…
Flashback to GameBoyLuke's blind USUM run, which he "failed" and kept going on because of Ultra Necrozma.
Ultra Necrozma is not a fight you can win if you go in blind without a designed team.
I feel like this sub should have a rule set in stone where you must censor the username of the person gatekeeping to prohibit harassment. Just a suggestion!
Imagine caring so much about something like this, insanity
I love the last comment on the third pic saying “you’re just doing a challenge run, not a nuzlocke”.
My guy…..what do you think a nuzlocke is?
Nuzlocke is a specific type of a challenge run. All nuzlockes are challenge runs, but not all challenge runs are nuzlockes. Permadeath is a rule in nuzlocke, but could just as well be a challenge run for someone just starting out CRing pokemon games.
