I have to admit that I didn’t trust this game at first glance. I don’t know, it just the first look seemed…meh.

But oh boy, how quick that changed. The plot, the exploration, the mechanics! Well, the last part is a bit, well, stiff, but it’s nonetheless a great game that I never expected to like.

  • Great game, great story and a cool mystery to uncover! I'd recommend it too!

For those who played the Skyrim mod afraid it being too similar and knowing the spoilers, don't worry as it's still interesting.

  • Forgotten City is fucking awesome. Great premise, good intrigue, surprisingly atmospheric, some dope twists, good ending, EXCELLENT opening. Didn't outstay its welcome and I was completely satisfied by the end. Wouldn't even want a sequel, it's all tightly wrapped.

    EXCELLENT opening

I had the opposite experience. The intro nearly made me stop playing, but after a while I ended up getting hooked.

Same for me personally. I wasn't really drawn in at first and had to force myself to keep going because I had heard such good things. After an hour or two I was hooked, but it took a bit of work.

  • I've only played the OG Skyrim Mod version. Always wanted to see how he modified it to be a standalone.

Story is pretty much completely different.

Go play it then. It's such a good game made by one person

  • What did you think about the ending? The whole aliens direction?

It took a while until i figured something strange was going on

Well, I think it was a risky move, but I loved it nonetheless.

Besides, it makes for an interesting plot twist

  • That game stuck with me, still does. Something about it…hard to explain or define. I felt connected to that world in a way I don’t normally with most games.

  • This is one of the best games I've ever played. And I've played thousands.

  • Fun fact: It started out as a Skyrim mod.

  • If you didn’t check out 12 Minutes or The outer wilds - Do not read too much into them as those are also time loop games, so you can spoil them easily.

I tried 12 minutes, but I actually got pretty lost so I let it go😅

I haven’t tried the outer wilds yet

Outer wilds is one of the most incredible games I've ever played. I would give anything to go into it blind for the first time again

Man, Im a huge fan of Forgotten City and immersive sim puzzlers in general.

Ive tried outerwilds 3 times, got into the gameplay loop and discoveries and all that... it has never even come close to clicking with me.

Meanwhile, its gotta be one of the most praised games on reddit since release.

    Wtf am I missing?!

Nothing, I'd say Outer Wilds is actually pretty divisive in terms of players liking it or not. But the fanbase is very vocal and is always recommending and rating the game highly, while others don't really care much to go against it.

It's a game that I wanted to love, its moments of discover and surprise are very very high. But I found the gameplay loop extremely repetitive, the controls clunky, the time limit too constrained. All together made the experience feel very frustrating to me. I also didn't like the characters' aesthetics, nor found them remotely interesting.

That was my case at least, maybe it didn't click for you for different reasons. But in the end, no game is for everyone

Man, if I waited until tomorrow to read your comment I'd have thought I was using a secret alt for when im drunk.

You nailed every thought I had about the game. The repetitive loop, clunky controls, and time limit were all issues for me. I definitely agree on the aesthetics, if it wasn't so unserious I might have been more willing to ignore the other stuff.

Its the only game Ive tried 3x despite never vibing at all, so like you I really wanted to like it.

Not sure how people feel about it but mods do exist for the game. I know there's at least one that gives you control over the time limit. Might help alleviate those issues a bit.

You need those first few ha-ah moments to really kick off what the hype is about. Just keep digging but if you see not much interest in uncovering the mysteries you've been asked, maybe that game isn't for you !

Admittedly for the first 15ish hours I was texting my friend saying “I still have no idea what the fuck is going on” and questioning why people love this game so much. Then something clicked and I couldn’t stop thinking about it and had to finish and am so glad I did. DLC was super fun too

One thing that helped me while playing was doing a couple of loops where I just had fun. I thought of one of the things I had been playing with earlier ( black hole, general gravity problems on Giants Deep, just wandering caves on Ash Twins ) and getting more "cozy" with it. That made the threads a little easier to follow because i wasn't as stressed about it, even if i knew i failed in what i was trying and lessened the frustration. Then again, there was a very particular mystery i found that really hooked me and made me strive towards it, so that may be something as well. Hope this helps.

i would call this game a ‘cult classic. it definitely has its problems but they’re not “offensive” enough for ppl to be vocal about them

I tried to do 12 minutes, I think it is a good game but I couldn't beat it. Everything I tried always seemed to fail and it didn't really keep me hooked enough to not have my attention wander

Oh yeah its my least favourite of all of them it’s just that there isn’t that many games of that type :D

Forgotten city is a common recommendation on the outer wilds subreddit when people are like “what can I play now?” After they finish outer wilds for the first time.

Note: they are not the same in any tangible way I can think of but they have a similar feeling.

Seconded for Outer Wilds, be sure it’s not “The Outer Worlds”. Folks sometimes get one vs the other and are very confused.

12 minutes is just so so bad. To me at least.

12 Minutes was terrible. Outer Wilds on the other hand, we all know it's the GOAT

Idk why you're downvoted, you're not wrong.

Well its just that there isn’t that many games of that type out there so I guess its worth trying.

  • I tried to get into this game, but couldn’t. Maybe I just didn’t give it enough time

I LOVED Outer Wilds, and my wife and I worked together to beat Blue Prince, Obra Dinn, and Lorelai. We got maybe 3 hours into forgotten city before we… forgot it

I tried Blue Prince! It got so frustrating!

Same. It came down to the fact that the main game was conversations, not puzzles or exploration.

  • I downloaded this game when it was on gamespass and I’m so thankful I did, it’s absolutely incredible.

  • This game ROCKED!! Once it's been long enough that I forget the twists I will definitely play again

  • It’s so good! I’ve only played like 5 hours and I love it

  • Hell yeah, I loved this game. Such a hidden gem

  • Awesome game. I feel like it has been long enough where I can play it again without remembering anything. Thanks for the reminder!

  • Loved how long it was… felt like a really tight tv mystery

  • Woah they made a standalone game? I remember when it was a Skyrim mod , it was cool

  • one of the best games ive ever played!

  • I loved that game! What end did you choose?

Believe it or not, I got the Saved everyone by convincing Pluto on my first attempt

so emotionnal when you are in the museum <3!<

  • You should try the Talos Principle 2 if you liked this game.

  • Just bought it, watching the new Spartacus House of Ashur and want a relatable game to partner with it haha

  • This game is an experience. A great one at that! Go in blind for the best time.

  • I'm sorry I'm just now seeing this post. This game was amazing.

  • I played it on steamdeck while on a long train ride, it was realy cool game. Any recommendations for similar games ?

  • Have had this game on my wishlist for a while, might have to pick it up!

  • really really enjoyed this game. One of the very few that got somewhat close to scratching the Outer Wilds itch

  • Now go play The Outer Wilds. Go in blind. Trust us.

  • Honestly you really should play this if you haven.t Go in blind! Its a bit of a walking simulator, but man the story just grabs you!

  • I like how I played the Skyrim mod years before this came out and when I played the game I got the same ending
