I consider the casting of Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen perfect. He has exactly the physical type I imagine a Targaryen in when reading the books. Not very handsome, but charming, extremely pale, lanky, with prominent facial bones reinforcing the silhouette, a mysterious/wicked air, and psychological problems that haunt this family, even driving a good portion of them to insanity. Everything about him seems very natural.

One of the best casting choices in Targaryen.

  • What sells it for me is his presence. Even standing still, he feels dangerous and calculating, which fits Aemond perfectly.

  • He was great in the last kingdom too

The baby Monk has come far

I rewatched HotD last month and am currently rewatching TLK and seeing Aemond as Baby Monk is breaking my brain!

    This actor has RANGE

  • The casting works because it doesn’t try to make Aemond likable or traditionally attractive. He feels sharp, intense, and slightly off, like someone who’s always one step away from violence. That’s exactly how he comes across in the book, and the actor nails that without overplaying it.

It's a perfect combination of excellent acting and the right choice of body type + characterization. The character is truly memorable.

That's how I felt when watching him.

The kind of person you never let walk behind you.

  • whoever cast Ewan Mitchell deserves a dragon bone statue - dude doesn't just play Aemond, he embodies Aemond. Every stare feels dangerous... Perfect casting for sure

  • Ewan Mitchell is the main reason why I love this character. I like the character writing (could use some improvement though, we'll see with s3), but I find the actor has really elevated the character for me. His acting is understated in terms of how he projects that menace with his body language and facial expressions. While still hinting at how Aemond is projecting a facade, and that under the coldness, he is a boiling pot of emotions. And he does it all without overdoing it. He has given that perfect balance of how Aemond is not a good person. But yet, I still can understand where he is coming from sometimes.

I loved his scene with Helaena particularly. Ewan was able to switch from begging, to ice cold fear, then to threatening Helaena, and then to fear again. And all within a span of a couple of minutes, with one eye too. Like that really impressed me. I also saw a gif set on how he has captured the younger Aemond actor's body language throughout both seasons. I haven't really seen that with anyone else on the show so far.

I hope that based on the promo for s3 so far, that they are allowing Ewan to fully tear down that stoic facade and fully convey Aemond's internal thoughts and fears. I have seen him in other roles, and he can emote really well. I think the writers have been leading the character towards that arc. But we'll see when s3 airs.

Oh I would love to see this gif set if you could pork g me to it?

Sorry but it's been a long time since I have seen it :( I saw it on Tumblr but I don't remember who posted it. But you can look up the scene where young Aemond is crying to Alicent about the pig, and then when older Aemond is towering over Alicent during their fight in the s2 finale. The gif set showed how Ewan basically replicated young Aemond's mannerisms, it was pretty cool. And then the other part showed how both actors wield the sword pretty similarly.

  • 10/10 casting for him fasure !!!!!

  • The other actor I like is Matt Smith who plays Daemon Targaryen, there are a lot of similarities between Daemon and Aemond.

  • Probably my favorite casting in the series. Matt Smith kills it too.

Turns the Character up to 11, lol.

I always thought that was funny as hell in Morbius.

  • Yep, loved him too

  • He always feels a hint away from full psycho, which is perfect.

  • I think the actor who plays Viserys I is a great actor, but he lacks something of a Targaryen. You can clearly see a characterization that sometimes seems a little artificial.

Very different from Ewan Mitchell who seems to have been born a Targaryen.

Kind of fitting for Viserys, no? He's the opposite of a stereotypical Targaryen after all, unlike Aemond or Daemon.

Yes. His facial features don't resemble those of the Targaryens.

I was referring more to his character, which his more generic looks amplify imo.

Ah, okay, it might have been Reddit's automatic translation that sometimes leaves things a bit vague. But I agree with you.

  • I think he looks more like aegon than aemond

  • [removed]

But he's 60 years old! He'd be older than his mother.

40 years ago, sure. He's a great actor. But Aemond is young.

Mads would've made a rad Euron though.
