I get why he wanted rob dead but surely the common enemy is the lannisters no? or at least put one of the lannisters beside the kid to die as its not like he's the one holding the power.

  • Stannis didn’t kill Robb, it was Tywin’s doing

The leaches were basically a guarantee of who would die during the war.

It seemed silly until it came true.

Stannis didn’t have to touch him.

Actually I don’t think she killed those three. I think she foresaw their deaths in her flame visions and acted like she caused them to die with the leech thingZ

  • He didn’t play the game and believed he was the rightful king so he should not have to go cap in hand asking for help when he was simply owed it based on the line of succession.

    He was

    Worked out well for him

He was just doing his duty

Sorry but Robert's eldest son is the rightful king as dictated to the traitor Ned Stark on his death bed.

  • Its explained a bit better in the book but the leech thing was in part a test of Melissandres claims about the power of kings blood to convince Stannis to go ahead with burning Gendry/Edric Storm to wake a dragon. Killing Tywin or Tyrion that way isnt necessary for a test thats just supposed to prove blood sacrifice will work.

Even then its ambigious if Robb, Balon and Joffrey dying shortly was actually because of Mels leaches or just a coincidence because the schemes of Tywin, Euron and Littlefinger to kill them were in motion before then

Stannis Fid hesitate before burning a leech and saying Robb Stark's name though.  Maybe he did feel he had something I'm common with Robb or that he may have understood the Northman's resolve to fight for his kingdom, but he still thought Robb was taking something that was owed him by right.

  • I thought he was only going after kings challenging the sovereignty of the throne.

That would be Joffrey, Robb, and Balon.

Can’t remember if the show mentioned them all.

It did, he also specifically stated "The false king..." Before naming each of them.

  • Stannis had a pretty blinkered viewpoint, as far as he was concerned everyone who stood between his bum getting on that ugly metal chair and claiming dominance of the entirety of Westeros was deemed an "enemy"

The Lannisters were visibly ambitious, but he considered that most of them would have bent the knee to his claim once Joffrey and his siblings were gone. Ambition wasn't a death-worthy crime, telling the "rightful" King to get stuffed, however, was.

  • Isn’t the leach things supposed to be “kings blood”?

So Rob, Joffrey, and Renly? The ones proclaiming themselves king

  • Stannis was pretty laser-focused on the throne and saw Robb as a direct threat to his claim. Plus Melisandre was all about that "usurper's blood" thing with the three kings, so burning random Lannisters probably didn't fit her magical recipe. Guy was stubborn as hell about doing things his way

Shaky theory but to me Stannis is a mirror of dany. With luck and plot armor being the difference maker
