Im finished watching GOT with my partner for the first time last week and I highly dislike season 8. We started HOTD this week and its been ok so far. But its mentioned that "the song of ice and fire" is a Targaryen secret prophecy that the white walkers will return. So then how did Samwell know to call the book The Song of Ice and Fire at the end of season 8? The explanation my partner can give is, Bran knew everything.

  • It was just supposed to be a reference to the series of books. Hotd made it something more

  • Who is a better plot device than bran the broken?

  • But its mentioned that "the song of ice and fire" is a Targaryen secret prophecy that the white walkers will return.

HotD began 3 years after GoT ended.

So then how did Samwell know to call the book The Song of Ice and Fire at the end of season 8?

Because it's just a nod to the books?

This fandom is ridiculous it's just a nice little nod to the books that's all.

Im actually very very new to this fandom and just trying to understand the lore. I didnt even know it was just a reference, I thought this was established in the books as the actual name of the prophecy, asking the question and discussing it isn’t that ridiculous

  • Lmao your partner's not wrong, Bran literally became the three-eyed raven and could see everything across time so he probably just told Sam what to call it

But didnt Bran know everything about men? Are the Valyrians not an entirely different race?

"men" was being used poetically. And even if that was not the case I would argue that Valyrian are human. For example we know they can reproduce with them and those can have off spring. This is one of the bare minimum requirements to be part of the same species.

For example horse and donkey can reproduce; but that creates a mule and mules can not have babies. So they are not part of the same species.

That makes sense, im fairly new to this lore. I thought Valyrian were kinda like elves were to men. Thanks for clearing that up

The Valyrians are humans. While inspired from them, the Valyrians are not Tolkien's Elves, which are a distinct race from Men.

The three-eyed crow's powers also have very little to do with humans as a race. They don't exclude any other race -- in fact, it's quite the opposite. The three-eyed crow is a warg and a skinchanger, meaning they can enter the mind of animals and humans and influence their behavior.

They are not. They're humans like everyone else. They just happened to have some people who could connect with dragons.

  • He wouldn't have. Plot hole. Originally just a shout out to the name of the book series.

If you need to make it work in-world Bran is as good an explanation as any

  • It's just tongue and cheek references, not really canon to the books.

  • It was simply Meta

  • HotD is very sloppily written and basically carried by its performances. The whole entire prophecy angle seems to only exist as an insecure reminder that this show is totally connected to GoT. It's was max cringe watching people on these subs claim HotD was better written and a better show than GoT back when season 1 aired.

With GoT being fresh in my head and not quite finished HotD yet (episode 8). Season 1-3 of GoT will be hard to beat and those last two episodes would have to be godlike to bring HotD to that level.

In fairness, the plot does get extremely compelling as the season progresses. But yah its the performances that really shine while the plot chugs along. It's basically for the same exact problem as the last couple seasons of GoT - the writers are trying to expand a tiny bit of source material and get a mixed reaction from fans.

I look forward to watching the rest!
