Its a hold over from when the wealthy wanted to show off. They wanted to show that they were so wealthy that they didnt need to farm their land. As not so wealthy people gained the resources to buy land they wanted to emulate the wealthy to impress the other not so wealthy people. Or something like that, I could be wrong.
Not just to show off, they were used for sporting and hosting events, and still grazed by livestock. I mean people put that space to use. Even in the last century people did back yard parties more often. Now so many lawns barely even get walked on and serve no purpose at all.
The worst part is this practice is the status quo most places. Such low frequency people doing low frequency things in their lives. They’re completely aloof and proud of what they do at the same time.
It also ruins the sensitive ecosystems that we are supposed to be living among, oh and our water quality
