    Macro plastics too

    parent root
    -16 points erabera

The ship has sailed really. Microplastics are in our bodies, in babies in the womb. Not saying we should stop caring or changing what we do, it just feels like a losing battle.

    parent root
    31 points RubberBootsInMotion

We're losing the battle because literally nobody that can make any meaningful change is trying to win it.

    parent root
    3 points SnrkyArkyLibertarian

I don't know why you're getting down voted. You're right. The stuff is everywhere. It's hard to do anything without coming in contact with plastics. Though hopefully the market signal will reach executive level individuals who can make production changes to eliminate plastics. Things that are biodegradable. More paper, metal, and glass in packaging and bottles, fewer disposable items, etc. I'm not a hippie by any means, but when we started finding out that a sizeable amount of plastic is in our brains, lungs, blood, eyes, and testes, I really started paying attention.

Maybe we'll be saved by some mechanism of nature that will eventually biologically filter out micro plastics in the environment after so many years. Sacrificial plants or animals that will collect them in themselves perhaps.

    parent root

It does kind of suck that OP's elderly parents got scammed. I can understand why they'd want something low maintenance but, yeah. Definitely better options

    parent root
    37 points Away-Living5278

They should have saved the $3000 and paid a lawn company $50 to mow. Or, if this is truly the entire yard, the kid next door $20.

    parent root
    3 points halberdierbowman

$50? Even if you could find a landscaper to mow your lawn for that, the grass grows back. If you live somewhere grass grows at a moderate speed, your $3000 budget will be gone before next year's done.

    parent root
    15 points FreeBeans

$50 2x a month is $600 a year if you have no winter.

Edit: I’m bad at math, it is $1200

    parent root
    2 points sunni_ray

Twice a month?! More like twice a week! In the begining of grass season and then again after the super duper hot part of the summer! im lucky if I can go once a week during the blistering hot parts of the season. I can't wait until my debt is paid down and I cant start switching my lawn over. Im doing a 60 ft x 17 ft veggie garden this year so that's a start. This year I was able to start killing 2 sections (one was 12x10 and the other 10x10) by planting some veggies but it's right next to the house, literally right next to the sidewalk that touches the house and I have a basement, so it was just to start killing the grass. But anyhow I got off track (love adhd). My point is: where do you live that you only have to mow every other week?! Cuz im jealous!

    parent root
    1 points FreeBeans

That is insane… I live in Massachusetts. Where do you live? Do you water your grass? We don’t do that here. Lol.

    parent root
    1 points sunni_ray

Nebraska. If i don't mow once a week, it's too long to handle. Snakes are bad here. Im not about to get bit by a diamond back rattle snake. When I do convert, it wont be things snakes like to hide in. I dont mind the non venomous ones, but im not going to make it easier for the venomous ones to hide out at the same time so.

    parent root
    2 points FreeBeans

Woof. We only have garden and rat snakes here. My husband wears knee high boots when he gardens.

    parent root
    -5 points halberdierbowman

    ...no?

    $50 twice a month is 50 x 24 = $1200

So if you're mowing your lawn 2.5x a month, $3000 would last exactly two years.

    parent root
    13 points Trini1113

Only if you have a 12-month growing season. And 2.5x a month seems excessive. I probably mow my lawn 4-5x a year.

    parent root
    2 points lost_horizons

Maybe depends on where you live. Here in Texas things dry out in the summer so you don't have to mow (unless you water it like some kind of idiot lol). Winter is short but also a non-mow season.

Where I grew up in Michigan it was weekly even without watering, maybe can space it more at the height of summer. Shorter season up there though. I don't know how it all balances out.

I'm sure these old folks are on board with the typical suburban ethos, so they're probably watering the lawn, want it mowed neat and tidy, not unkempt looking.

Should have xeriscaped it or something. But in the end nothing is no-maintenance so there'll always be some cost, so acting like the fake turf would have zero cost isn't accurate either. It would need repairs or replacements eventually in high traffic areas and there are the fall leaves to deal with too

    parent root
    3 points FreeBeans

Do you mow that much, all year??

    parent root
    2 points halberdierbowman

People mow their lawns literally every single week where I live during the summer half of the year. For the other half of the year, probably more like twice a month?

It's insane how much maintenance people spend on this.

I live in a neighborhood of about a thousand homes, and we pay six figures per year to mow the neighborhood common lawns. I think it's about eight guys who come once a week to do this? So it's literally more than one person's full time job to do this. And then basically double that because each homeowner also mows or pays someone to mow their own lawn as well.

    parent root
    3 points FreeBeans

That sounds awful. We only mow like twice a month for about 2-3 months. Even then, we’re sick of it and converting half acre to native meadow.

    parent root
    2 points magicfungus1996

How are you going to say "no winter" like your implying 24 mows a year then comeback with "who mows that much?"

    parent root
    1 points FreeBeans

even in summer there will be dry months!

    parent root
    4 points Away-Living5278

My dad pays $30 for a lawn about this size. Including weed whacking. This is a tiny yard.

And this turf will require maintenance too. Less, but not none. Plus annual depreciation because it has a limited lifespan.

    parent root
    1 points Goats_in_parks

    Fake grass needs maintenance too.

    parent root
    3 points hyrule_47

I’m disabled and have a small section of artificial turf so I can walk on it. Regular grass is a no go. Perhaps they need a similarly flat surface

    parent root
    2 points NaturalFreaks

Me too! And it’s perfect for my situation. My yard looks nice (at least at a glance) and i don’t have to hire someone to mow!

    parent root

    parent root
    2 points p4-1

There are better options, but when you’re old and you’re looking at future mobility issues, something like this makes a lot of sense. Chips, gravel, sand, stuff like that is hard to walk on as it moves and is uneven. Grass is high maintenance, concrete is (only slightly) more unsightly than fake grass. I am not a fan of fake grass by any means, but the safety of elderly people, and the ability for the. To enjoy being outside instead of glued to the news on their couches, kinda feels more important to me.

    parent root
    0 points freetherhinoz

I agree it is a worthy exception.

    parent root

Green painted concrete would look better than this and be more environmentally friendly

    parent root
    2 points Hey_I_Aint_Eddy

I went all-in on wood chips this past year. I say “all-in” but we have several contained garden areas around the yard that include native grass and other plants but no lawn.

It was a lot of work and I spent weeks taking a couple dozen trips to various grocery stores to get extra cardboard to lay down under the chips but it was all free thanks to ChipDrop.

    parent root
    2 points Optimassacre

I love chipdrop. I've done it twice now. I had a side yard that was completely pointless, so I turned it into a pollinator friendly garden space.

    parent root
    1 points Hey_I_Aint_Eddy

It ended up working perfectly for me. But I did have a mountain of chips in my driveway for a few months because I got in November and didn’t get going on it before it froze.

The only real time that I would be okay with someone with a turf lawn is they are physically or mentally incapable of caring for other options, but even then there's tons of volunteer services that do lawn care and other chores for people

    parent root
    -4 points ShredGuru

Still arguably more environmentally friendly than a grass lawn

    parent root
    15 points dogatemydignity

This is plastic outdoor carpet. Nothing is living below it, nothing is growing through it, and It will eventually break down and further contaminate the soil beneath.

A real lawn might not be the most environmentally friendly choice, but it's definitely better than plastic outdoor carpet.

    parent root
    23 points ZealCrow

    Definitely not.

You could argue from a water use perspective, depending on the climate. As a hydrogeologist I’d say the plastic waste is still worse.

    parent root
    -3 points ShredGuru

Lawns are almost completely non-native and they require tons of water to maintain.

    parent root
    20 points MechaGallade

And according to the hydrogeologist, plastic waste is still worse

    parent root

    parent root
    8 points freebytes

Except you could simply let whatever grass is native grow there. You do not need to maintain it other than cut it, and for $3000, you can pay someone else to do it for quite a while.

    parent root

OP opened the post with "my elderly parents" so that is clearly the reason. They might no longer be able to tend to it

I don't condone plastic grass, but this is an a appropriate use case

Did they by chance knock on the door or put a flyer through the door? Can I always suggest that you always ask then for a written quote stating EXACTYLY what they are going to do and how much it will cost.

Explain that you need a VAT No. + business address, phone number etc. Use email not WhatsApp or Facebook to communicate and keep records. If they make excuses like can't do them any more because of COVID etc say you are sorry and move on. Explain that you need this it's the way you do things properly and if it all goes wrong or there is any bad workmanship you will need to know who your are dealing with.

99% of the time this will scare away the unwelcome types who are out for a fast buck. If not then in this situation the paperwork should help with any claim

Do not want sand or gravel tracked in my house. Do not my dog to pee on grass carpet. That’s just bad. $75.00 every week to cut it is high too.

I personally would find these people and you can figure out the rest.

Spray paint the whole thing an take days off for the drying

Clover would have been better, in my opinion.

Wow it looks even worse than most artificial lawns, and that's a low bar

An expensive way to cheapen the whole yard!!

More soil that can't absorb water means more runoff to manage. slower aquafer refill, more river contamination

If I were in his local government's zoning commission I would have voted against that building permit!!

They could have, at the very least, laid the “grass” along the same bias.🤪

I'm guessing OPs parents wanted zero maintenance...

Well they hit the nail on the head I guess ! Zero maintenance and zero value or appeal 🤷🤷 money well spent I guess !

I do feel bad that OP’s elderly parents got swindled but damn that looks like someone threw a bunch of old rugs down. Why do people like turf??

This also becomes the HOTTEST part of the property. It's held down by tiny plastic beads everywhere that reflect and absorb all of the sunlight. It SUCKS to use in the summer.

It's facing the wrong direction...did you skimp on materials because it all has to face the same direction and if they didn't have clean edges and needed to do all of these small pieces it could be they couldn't face them all correct direction.

    parent
  • 1 points LASubtle1420

What im Guessing is they paid 3000 for materials and labor but wanted to save money (like 2,000 dollars) and didn't purchase enough material and the workers did what they could with what they had. Keep in mind a job that costs 3000 dollars in Arkansas is not the same as a 3000 dollar job in Florida or New York. I just did an install and I got paid a1/4 of what a regular company would make and the lady last minute changed everything and got indoor outdoor carpet instead of turf and she still paid 3000 dollars. So yeah ... the materials alone can run close to 3000 with all of that seam tape and nails with all of those tiny pieces..she should have paid the 5,000 dollars it would normally cost in her area for a space that size. .

Those trees will die, the soil will die under the turf, the plastic will degenerate to shreds within 5 years and it will be too hot to walk on.

They can think about how to fix it during their time in the padded room they need to check themselves in to

There is a "directional grain" & it looks like it wasn't all oriented in the same direction.

    parent
  • 1 points Effective_Shock3182

We had this in our old backyard. It gets super hot in direct sunlight during the summer. It’s not comfortable to walk on bare foot in the heat. Also they’re extremely flammable; be careful with it.

I am baffled by this. That material costs nowhere near that price and it looks like my nephew Thomas laid them down so where does 3k come from?
