This winter I plan on tilling up my whole front yard, planting bushes and fruit trees and tossing a ton of wildflower seeds all over the yard. See what Mother Nature does.
That sounds like an amazing plan!!! I do advise against tilling though. It stirs up weed seeds and kills microbes in the soil.
Instead, I recommend either biodegradable landscape barrier or leaves/newspaper, 6-8” of compost & mulch, and letting it rest.
Order a chip drop and call it a day! An arborist will drop a truckload of wood chips for free. Letting it rest is key to building microbes in the soil. When creating new garden spaces, I usually try to wait a full season before planting, if I can.
Me in my local gardening sub today, full of idiots lamenting their neighbors "letting their leaves blow all over the place" and killing their grass... 🙄 Bro. Come on.
Boring is easy to maintain. They don't do anything themselves, they just pay for a landscaper to come do a monthly mow and blow and call it good enough.
Yes but if messy isn't your jam, you can still support biodiversity! A lot folks don't like the messy look and get turned off from the idea. My yard is pretty wild, but I keep a small section of lawn in the front yard rake the leaves to the wild sections. I have defined garden borders, weed non-native species, and don't let too much stuff flop into the sidewalk or road. A lot of neighbors have been interested in what I'm doing and have started following suit, and HOA doesn't get any complaints!
Yes to all of this!! Creating a coherent design and following the rules of your HOA is the way to go. Tidy up where you can and leave a bit behind for the wildlife.

That sounds ideal, but a ton of work lol. I’ll keep it in mind.

Ohhhhh good idea lol. I will look up the biodegradable weed barrier. That seems easiest to get then cover it with mulch.
Make sure the wildflower mix is native to your region please!
100% I’ve bought seeds from UF and collecting from roadside(after verifying what they are and where they are native)
Amazing work!

And people wonder where all of the pollinators are going!!! Ugh 😤
This is what I keep telling people. Nobody listens, can't stand the neat and tidy brigade sometimes
Makes me sick!! People like being boring? They hate the environment! Or pretending they live on a golf course?!

Same. I love my naturalized areas, they are beautiful and teeming with life.
That’s the absolute best!
