Normies never seem to get this. Yes, the new pedestrian/bike path is going to make driving a little less convenient for the drivers. It's also going to make it safer for the pedestrians and bikes. God forbid a mild inconvenience for the people utilizing powered transport in a weather-proof capsule.
Because Taiwan cities mostly don’t have sidewalks. Or if they do, they’re a jumbled mess with constant changes in height, random obstacles, parked motorcycles, etc, so you probably have to go into the street often anyway.
This should be raised, but it’s sadly still an improvement over most streets there.
What I find amusing is that if you turn to the right, it turns out there IS a semblance of a sidewalk... but it's fully obstructed by parking AND fences
At this point we just need to completely and unapologetically take space from cars. We need to pedestrianize streets completely, remove lanes without a single care at all, build on all the parking, etc. They don’t budge an inch even when we make the changes in as car friendly a manner as possible, so we might as well go all in
Agree, go all in - whilst also reminding people that it will actually make little difference in many cases for driving and in plenty of cases actually BETTER because less unecessary car trips are made in favour of other mode choices whilst the stroads see reduced traffic usage.
Taiwan is horrible for pedestrians. When I was younger I thought it has it charm, but now I am less mobile and realise how dangerous it is. You often you can’t use the sidewalk so you are forced to walk on the stroad.
They're terrible, especially since solid concrete ramps at crossings and certain intervals make them accessible to wheelchairs while also having some sort of physical barrier to cars.
Having to put ups and downs all the time is a lot more expensive for not much protection, unless you really go for huge borders. Cars will go up unless they are more than 6 centimeters, usually. It's also a lot more planning to do. It's also going to be a lot of patchwork, and a very rough pedestrian experience with the ups and downs caused by driveways all the time (because of course, these have to be level!).
Additionally, it forces cyclists to stop and dismount on the road, which is still about 4% of cyclists accidents in Belgium. In many cases too, when planners try to separate cyclists from the road, they put them on the sidewalk level... and you end up having essentially a rollercoaster of ups and downs, again because of the driveways. Here's a local example. Not to say it's pleasant for wheelchair users, in the absence of cycle path.
No - having the sidewalks be level is the most optimal solution, at least until high speeds (≥90km/h) are involved.
yes, i agree going for lack of safety features on sidewalks is much easier and cheaper.
the up and down experience can easily be solved by raising the road to the level of the sidewalks at crossings. simultaneously acting as a traffic calming measure for cars.
bicycles should never be on the sidewalk by design, and they should not be on the same level as sidewalks.
i understand this is hard and expensive, i think human lives are worth it.
Not the lack of safety features, the lack of wrong safety features. If you need cars not to go there, bollards will be cheaper than a huge border, for the same length. You can also resort to full barriers in dangerous areas such as fast curves outside of cities.
A border is not a safety feature, it's a mere illusion. It's just like paint to modern cars, they'll climb'em like it's nothing. Again, unless you go for massive ones.
yes, bollards should also be a standard feature, in addition to raised sidewalks. raised sidewalks serve as a protective measure at slower speeds and a physical reminder to drivers that they are going off the road. possibly resulting in cosmetic damage, that serves as a motivator for drivers to pay attention.
paint is an illusion, for the same reason a sidewalk level with the road is.
If Taiwanese officials wanted to make any money in a very short term, they would send out cops to ticket every car parked on the sidewalk. The inhabitants think that the sidewalk is "too wide" but blocking it so no one can walk on it is ok?
They say the cycling is great. It isn’t. I rode the 1000+ km journey around route 1. On paper there’s a bike lane, but it’s actually a second scooter lane and used for parking.
Before I get attacked in the comments, everything off the bike is amazing about Taiwan. Compared to the Korea by Bike routes and Japan, Taiwan leaves a lot to be desired.
Drivers are terrified of anything that could cause a scratch to their vehicles. As soon as they spot an object like this they suddenly become unable to tell how big their vehicle is and wether it can fit so they stop and honk like idiots.
It's wild how cars are also allowed to drive straight through nightmarkets there. Even in the most well known one in Taipei, Ximending, you can encounter a car making it's way through thick crowds of people. Absolutely asinine.
Me seeing the picture: This is definitely from the southern counties, one of the barbaric lands.
People living there absolutly refuses to walk, would go everywhere on scooters, complains that police in the north are enforcing the traffic rules too much and “I’m breaking the rules because it’s stupid and it’s more convenient for me.”
why would it interfere with the car's driving path when there are clear lines marked to show where the car's driving path is supposed to be lmao
I would actually argue that it's the point for it to interfere with the car's driving path.

just different. the car does everything anyways
News flash, the light bulb may give out light.
Ah, yes, my favourite type of pedestrian infrastructure - a colourful puddle.
painted pedestrian gutter
Why, for the love of God, is that sidewalk even with the road? Why is the sidewalk not raised?
Right now it's just walking on the road and hoping the paint will keep cars off it.

In earlier times, when there were no sidewalks.

I do agree the flexible deliniators are not the right choice. Bollards are much better.
Why is Taiwan so surprisingly carbrained?
Perhaps aspiration towards the western culture
But there are Western countries with cities that aren't so focused around cars
When the only thing on your mind is your car, every surface is a road 😒
Level sidewalks are great for wheelchairs, and emergency exits when cycling! Keep it that way!
But please place some solid poles!
They're terrible, especially since solid concrete ramps at crossings and certain intervals make them accessible to wheelchairs while also having some sort of physical barrier to cars.
And then also place solid poles.

How am I suppose to run over these pedestrians if these poles are in the way?
God forbid the dangerous road users cannot easily flatten the other road users! 😱

Carbrains are mannerless beasts no matter the country, it's a pity only physical barriers can deter them from driving where they're not supposed to.

“Pingtung” Oh yeah it is.
Ah yes, “get fucked” infrastructure. I can’t wait to do the same with ped infra.
Paint never works.
worst province in china when it comes to pedestrian safety measures
