i’m using the O-rings from eyedroppering preppys. This mod does three things:
It makes the cap close much softer without a click, which should preserve magnet life.
It keeps the cap from spinning and making too much noise
It keeps the section from unscrewing from the rest of the pen
Don’t over tighten or the O-ring will just get squashed and be useless
Curious about preserving magnet life. I have some really old magnetic things (not just pens) and I haven't really noticed them being dead from use.
Some magnets are prone to cracking after repeated collisions.
Is that an issue with the viper? Mine seems fine and I treat it pretty rough.
No idea. That's just what can happen to neodynium magnets.
I wouldn’t think so? I think the neodymiums you’re talking about are much larger and are able to accelerate to much greater velocities before impact, the space where the field is strong enough to accelerate the cap is small enough i find it unlikely you’d ever get enough force to crack anything
Having worked with hundreds of them (in 3d printing). I can tell you for a fact that small ring neodymiums do chip, crack and break under just the kinds of stresses that the viper lid undergoes.
The magnets themselves are incredibly brittle, but they are usually coated or housed in a metal coating that is the real protection against structural failure. So the question is more about the quality (ie thickness) of the housing than the size of the magnet.
The cap is heavy! Maybe you’re right that they’re just that brittle, but you’re definitely gonna have much lower energy collisions with the magnet-in-cap setup, whether that will make the difference I couldn’t tell you but it will definitely make a difference!

Some Vipers have had problems where the magnets crack.
I do find it tends to unscrew easily… good idea!
