• We're going full circle to when the characters in shows would just start spontaneously talking about some product they use.

You just spurred a memory I have from when I was a kid watching Burn Notice with my mom. I think twice in that show, the main character narrated over glamor shots of a Hyundai about how it was the perfect car for the job he was doing. It was such a blatant ad placement that as soon as I read your comment, it immediately popped into my head, despite not having seen it in well over a decade, lol.

Did you ever see the 30 Rock episode where they were complaining about having to write product placement in for something called the "GE Trivection Oven", which was actually real product placement by GE (who owned NBC at the time)?

No, I never watched that show, but that is wiiiild

And oh my god, the gratuitous ad in Designated Survivor for the Ford. Legitimately though I had missed a cut to commercial

USA did a bunch of that: Burn Notice, Suits, Royal Pains. I can't remember if Monk or Psych did it?

As I recall, there was at least one episode of "Heroes" where the character, Hiro, wouldn't stop shouting "Nissan Versa!"

Oh! And there were multiple episodes of "Bones" that touted the features of the Toyota Prius.

I’m rewatching it, and they did the same thing with Claire and the Nissan Rogue. Barf.

The ones in the show Bones are my absolute favorite, wild that they did it like that

I watched bones a while back. Cant remember any ads. But maybe the german syncro took out ads and changed them.

"Try some nice hot Mococoa! From the mountains of Nicaragua!"

Finally we can put smoking back into cartoons!

  • In what world is that "invisible"?

The ads are right in front of you without you seeing them as ads.

Yk what ill appreciate it if the story is good enough, repeated ads are what makes them annoying.

Yesss yesss, that’ssss the ssssspirit. Let ussss influence your every decisssssion.

Every decision you make is already determined by the specific set of stimulus that led to this moment. Free will is a lie.

Lol my cheap ass doesn’t even buy a full priced apple case, if they think they can change my mind? They cant go ahead.

    Cerveza Cristal....

Basically like the top image, this guy would be drinking anything and suddenly he has a coca cola in his hand or a pepsi. Or an iced tea or anything else. It would be a product placement ad.

  • Should already be illegal in many countries, since advertisements need to be made clear.

Germany for example has a law that prevents unfair competition which includes "Schleichwerbung" ("sneaky ads"). The most prominent example of what this causes may be Influencers having to write "paid advertisement" somewhere on the screen while talking about the product.

Unfortunately, these are not generally the sort of folks I associate with a robust regard for compliance and regulatory issues.

I cite Cerveza Cristal vs. Lucasfilm

(Not an actual lawsuit I don't think. But they filed a claim...)

Same in the uk, I was literally just reading though the legal document that says so earlier this week

  • So that’s why Walter white tried to sell me a can of raid

The hallucinations will be legendary. Recommended by 9/10 dentists.

  • Wow, they mixed 2 things I hate and made both of them infinitely worse!

  • Dexter Morgan just sold me a new steak knives set, and Mickey Mouse sold me traps to kill his cousins with.

  • Cerveza Cristal!

  • Truman Show has a few words.

  • Stupid self-aggrandizers gonna stupid self-aggrandize. Still, their limits are diminishing.

  • Introducing Coca Cola's new 40oz can.....or maybe that guy is just tiny.

  • Smoke. Smoke. Smoke. Are you smoking yet?

  • It would take less than two years for tv show companies to start picking the best spots to trick the AI into placing a targeted ad, then building short, meaningless or unrelated scenes around the spot where the ad scene would go, and then just leaving a blank gap in the show where the ad would go. And then we’re back to ads every 8 or so minutes, except the AI company is now just an advertising agency with a techy name

  • Not a product placement, but I feel the absolute best host endorsement (live read) is when Norm MacDonald tried endorsing Mangrate on his webshow and Mangrate pulled out immediately. If you haven't seen it you need to right now
