I have been replacing most of my apps with fossify alternatives & either removing or disabling the old apps I no longer use.

Is it possible to completely replace the default gallery app on Samsung? I'm not finding any options to disable the app / remove the data (photos videos ect)

Or is this a situation where I will have 2 active gallery apps

  • I try to go open-source as much as possible, but I am aware that sometimes it's not possible or worth it. Samsung doesn't have adverts and removing it isn't going to reduce the personal data Samsung gathers from your phone. If there isn't a good or better alternative, I wouldn't worry if I were you.

    Aves has lots of really good features such as powerful tagging, search, map view, batch rename, GPS editing, full motion photo support including sharing and it is really fast with great UI. It isn't an editor.

    Ave libre is action packed with features. You can creat galleries, lock you gallerys and make secure folder of sorts which not even your system can access, add tags, supports movies and plays them at high quality. Its just miss leading at first and needs to played with a little bit because it gets all the little things right instead of all the big things.

    How did you go about connecting the camera app to access fossify gallery?

    I disable all Samsung apps by default. Even my camera is OpenCamera and that seems to be quite happy to open fossify gallery.

    If you are interested in privacy don't give up, and don't listen to advice that says it's not worth it or it's not possible. Make the effort; even if you lose a couple of niche features it's worth it.

    The difference between a privacy conscious person and a normal person is that a normal person will say: it's not showing me ads so I'm happy.

    A privacy conscious person will say: even if it's not showing me ads I don't want it to have my personal data, period.

    Samsung is easily one of the worst in this regard.

  • Canta app can remove the default gallery app while still creating a backup just in case you want to reinstall.

    There is a really good PC app, freeware not FOSS, that can disable / delete it. I can't post it here but if you're interested, message me.

  • Which Samsung do you have? Which apps have you removed or cleaned? I have an A26, but it's very different from one of the S series phones because they're more powerful. I think my phone should perform a bit better if I do a thorough cleaning.

  • i have fossify camera and open camera installed along with samsung camera. only fossify cam let me pick non-samsung gallery for in-app gallery shortcut, both open cam & samsung cam are hard-wired to samsung gallery app.

    i mostly took food photos, they're not running around. and the camera shortcut on lockscreen is still samsung camera for quick action.
