I put wax on it before putting together. It seized up as I was trying to line up the guides. I tried the behind-the-knee method. I tried wearing nitrile gloves for better grip (I don't have a rubber jar opener). I tried icing the male end and running the female end under hot water. I even tried combining all of these methods and it won't even budge. I don't currently have a second person to help me. Any other ideas? I've never had a rod that I couldn't pull apart behind the knees. Is this a manufacturer defect? Any other ideas for me to try? Should I just contact the manufacturer? It's a glass rod if that makes any difference.
I had the exact same issue, glass rod as well. I was not used to a spigot ferrule. My fly shop recommended this Kelly Gallop video and it worked! Ducktape loops sticky side out. The rod is hard to separate because it's too thin to get a grip on. Use ducktape loops to get a good grip.

If I'm late to party maybe somebody else could use this.
Worked for me, and it was just as easy as in that video. Couldn't believe it.
That dude knows every trick. And I like his videos too.
Not late. I'll give it a try
Also yes, after looking up a spigot ferrule this is exactly where I went wrong lol. I didn't know 🤷
Same, I was so frustrated. Let us know if you get them separated.
I just did! Used the duct tape method behind the knees. It was still really tough and took all my strength, but it worked!
Yes!
Leave in sunlight, 2 people, both pull and twist.
I use a tiny bit of natural skin oil (side of the nose) on male ferrules when assembling rods. Helps them seat smoothly and not stick later.
Yeah I did the side of the nose at first. Couldn't get it to slide all the way together, used wax, got a bit further, then got stuck.
They don't usually go all the way on.
Yeah this was my introduction to a spigot ferrule, which I never heard of.
Manage to get it apart? Duct tape method?
Yep. Duct tape and behind the knees
And how would making the male ferrule diameter bigger and stickier with wax help it seat further?
Was isn't sticky, and it can be an excellent lubricant.
Boeshield T-9 is a spray wax lubricant and waterproof metal protector that works great on things like hinges, or bike parts...
The purpose of wax is to provide extraction, not lubrication
I'm not sure there is any difference. I agree it's not really a lubricant. It's more like a release agent.
Spray T-9 (wax) on your hinges or bike parts and the effect is just exactly like lubrication. It's not sticky....
It's not a crazy thing to do, and no doubt it allows the joint to seat further. I wouldn't do it because there is no need - the oil from the side of your nose works better and is always there and free.
I would very much like to extract.
It would not. It just gives it a tiny bit of tack.
Once you get it apart, next time don’t force it. Just slide the pieces together snugly. If it has a spigot ferrule, there is supposed to be a gap there.
Why would you put wax on a brand new rod ferrule? Did it not fit correctly initially?
Mineral oil or all purpose all around the joint, let soak for an hour and twist. If that doesn't work you likely have wax mixed with dirt that seized up and need to heat it with a lighter to melt the wax. I would do 5/7 seconds @ 2" away from the rod on each side for the wax to warm up.
Use an old bike inner tube cut it. Will give you a better grip than the gloves.
