I am contemplating/researching frame bags for a Salsa Heyday. I am interested in hearing about the following:

  1. What brand, model size seems to work well for short rides? I.e. not bikepacking or overnighting etc.

  2. What can/do you bring/fit in it?

  3. Half or full frame?

I am primarily looking for room to maybe shed a light/small puffer jacket and carry extra gloves etc. along with a pump, multitool etc.

  • Revelate Ranger, full frame. I just got one on sale for my Mukluk and it's a very nice bag.

Same, size medium on my medium Wednesday. I keep a fat tube, light puffy jacket, pump, multi tool, tire lever, keys, wallet, phone in it. Pretty full with the jacket.

It is awesome not wearing a pack with that stuff in it. I stay so much cooler now, less sweaty.

  • I looked at those, that looks like a great option. I was hoping for something in stock if possible. Not sure I want to wait 5-6 weeks. Or maybe I suck it up and use a backpack until it shows up…

Too each their own. To have a frame bag that fits perfectly was worth it to me. Plus you can design in a way, no other person has that specific frame bag.

  • Salsa makes a pack 3 size frame bag that fits my large Heyday. $80ish.

I looked everywhere online for that bag and it was out everywhere and now it's no longer being produced. Where did you find yours and how recent?

Yep, same. It appears they may have them for XL.

Yeap. They have been blowing out the last of them. Perhaps they have more comming. I just picked up a new XL for ny new heyday. Finally upgraded my 2016. Honestly though I would go Rogue Pands or Revelate Ranger.

I have been using revelate and salsa frame bags since 2004 ish. I find just a couple models fit pretty much all my bikes. I now have four mainframe bags. The originals are still in excellent shape but they are not waterproof like the new ones. I still use them but the heyday has a weird frame shape and I decided it needed a new bag. This particular bag lives on my farbike at all times. The number one thing I use it for is a little sealant, a pump, etc., my insulated water bottle (keeps the top from freezing), and I am always taking off a layer once I get warmed up on the trail. Oh, and my phone and keys in the left pocket.

Cannot say enough about revelate bags over the years but I do not descriminate. I havee bags from lezyne, bikase, Ortlieb, a guy called ATM / Andrew The Maker. Not sure if he is still making them. And a host of other makers. Have not had the pleasure of trying any Rogue Panda. For some reason I always come back to Revelate. I use them for commuting, bikepacking and everyday riding.

Probably the one I use the most is my Mag Tank. Love the new magnetic closure. I have worn out several zippers over the years of heavy use. Several times I have mailed bags into revlelate because of either wear or a mouse chewed zipper. No fault of the bags. In particular you are going to wear stuff out if you use it 3-4 days a week. So now I use the mag tank on my daily driver and the zipper gas tanks on my less heavily used bikes. I could tell you how many revelate my SO and I have between us but I have lost count. Some are so old and faded we don't use them anymore but they all still work. :)

    Great info, thank you.

I've had two of the salsa bags. One is 6 or 7 years old on my salsa Fargo and has been great. The other one lasted 2 seasons of fat bike commuting and riding on my Mukluk. The small left pocket liner separated from the outer shell. My biggest gripe with these bags is that they aren't actually waterproof and they don't drain at all when they do get water in them.

  • I have 2 salsa mukluks 1 has salsa exp hardtail frame pack The other has a Revelate designs frame bag I really like them both It’s nice to have some extra storage Tools, extra water bottle, extra layer , extra snacks It’s always better to have some extra room

Which Revelate did you choose? A Ranger like the replies above? That may be the best option from what I have seen. I wish I would have caught a sale…

Yes. Ya the bags are expensive I did a ton of searching and there aren’t many out there. I was looking at getting a custom bag made but that was even more money

  • I bought a random frame bag (ibera brand, or something) like 12 years ago on Amazon.com (a small online used book store). Its been stuffed to bursting with beer and flannels, and it still works flawless. I don't use it much anymore, but it's still serviceable.

If I had to buy a frame today I'd get a fairweather from bluelug.com... or something for $20 on Amazon again.

I would try to get something with a brighter color inside... Finding random small shit against a black liner at dusk is challenging.

    Tldr: fuck you, respectfully.

  • If you want something in stock salsa makes bags to fit there bikes and also look at revelate. Both bags are excellent just not as pretty😉
