My family is religious and I'm not. I have heard of many stories that families kick out their loved ones because they believe in god. It makes me sad because a parent shouldn't love God more than their own kid. As someone who's unemployed with no job right now, I can't afford risking my place at home.

I don't think my mom would give me a hard time because she's married to an athiest, but her mom is a bitch and will probably end up hating me for not believing in God. It sickens me that I have to hide that I'm an athiest just so I won't get kicked out, and I hate that people in their 50s are still believing that there's a fucking man in the sky. It is laughable that people are this gullible.

  • You’ll fit right in. IMHO most christians are also pretending to believe in god.

That’s exactly what I believe. They’re just pretending for the community

When they could just play Magic the Gathering or Warhammer.

Now they're in a community where we all pretend that a magical fantasy world is real, except we aren't lying about it 😂

Or they believe in a god in the broadest sense possible. One that doesn't have any actual traits but exists in an abstract sense somewhere and.....is just unknown.

I've maintained a lot of people are basically deists and don't realize it. They don't believe in a god that talks to people or intervenes in a way that religions teach, just a god that exists because that's what their society believes.

This is functionally identical to believing in no god at all for most people, only conceptually different.

  • Your home may be different, but It doesn't have to be any more painful than pretending to like your grandma's barely-edible casserole. Do you know how often anything explicitly Christianity related comes up in normal day-to-day life even raised in a Catholic household? Very little. And you have the advantage that people naturally assume that the people around then all the time have the same beliefs. Without you smacking her in the face with it, she will never guess that you don't believe. It's not like she is gonna find your scary evil athiest Bible on your bedside table.

  • It’s the smartest thing to do. I’m doing it right now just to avoid an argument I don’t want to have. Your excuse is way better.

Yeah. I've been told my grandmother is a bitch and I don't feel like causing drama just because I don't believe in god. It's stupid. Grandma will probably disown me, & mom will get mad & blame me. I'm keeping shit safe and playing along. Not worth the stress.

It is really stupid. I’m sorry you’re going through this. Stay safe!

  • Fake it till you make it. Do not come out until you are financially independent and have moved out.

    I'm a Christian, am I okay?

Our rule of thumb for Christians is "listen more, and speak less". If you're here to understand us or to get more information to help you settle your doubts, we're happy to help. We're not going to push you into leaving Christianity because that's not our place. If someone does try that, please hit "report" on the offending comment and the moderators will investigate. But if you're here to "correct the record," to challenge something you see here or the interpretations we give, and otherwise defend Christianity, this is not the right place for you. We do not accept your apologetics or your reasoning. Do not try to help us, because it is not welcome here. Do not apologize for "Christians giving the wrong impression" or other "bad Christians." Apologies can be nice, but they're really only appropriate if you're apologizing for the harm that you've personally caused. You can't make right the thousands of years of harm that Christianity has inflicted on the world, and we ask you not to try.

  • I just read some of them. Awful. I don't know how my mom would react, she thinks I believe in God, but my stepdad is an athiest so he might support me. This is horrible. Parents should love their children more than Jesus.

"Parents should love their children more than Jesus."

That's why I call religion a mental disease. How can you love a dead guy you've never seen more than the children you raised from birth?

Funny thing about me is that I never understood why people love this man. A lot of religious people do but I question him.
