Why do these car's or the driver's of these car's press the brakes driving along a straight road/Motorway?
I drive a fairly new truck and when these car's overtake then pull back in and consequently start braking it causes my truck to jump on the brakes automatically.
One of them passed me a few weeks ago in the car and afterwards he kept braking every few seconds.
Is this a feature of the Car or just stupid driver's?
It’s the braking effect caused by regeneration from the motor. If you lift off the throttle the car will slow down and activate the brake light. You don’t even need to be off it completely.
It's regenerative braking, I have a Hyundai and every time I lift off the accelerator significantly the brake lights come on.
Hyundai got so many complaints they had to reprogram the cars, so now it's less sensitive so if you lift off slightly then the lights don't come on.
People not knowing how to turn off regen braking on the motorway.
Could be either of following
Regen braking and people taking foot off accelerator and automatically the car will kikc in the brakes
Or cruise control and they have overridden the system to pass you out, once they have gone past it will automatically bring the car back to the speed limit of the road
Honestly its stupid drivers I would expect who don't know how to use the technology in the car, personally I just put on cruise control and just stay at the limit, I don't feel the need to pass people just to pass them.
Cruise control shouldn't activate the brake lights when slowing a vehicle down, any car I've ever been in they just coast down to the speed. My BEV with 1 Pedal driving never applied the brakes when dropping speed on cruise control.
It's drivers using 1 Pedal driving who after they pass out they lift off the throttle and that applies the brakes and turns on the brake lights, they accelerated to get past the large vehicle ASAP and then they panic brake because they are going over the speed limit.
Never checked to be honest
I know if I am on road lets say at 100kmph, want to pass something out so I override the system, once I pass it out and release the accelerator the car will slow itself back to the 100kmph
I took it that would mean brake lights come on
Depends on rate of deceleration if the actual brakes aren't being applied.
It was more my assumption the brake lights would come on. I have never checked
As I said most of the time I just put on cruise, stick on a podcast and off I go, I dont need to race other drivers and let the car set the correct speed limit
I do think it is option 1 and people who dont know how to use regen braking. I seen it on BMW as well and a video on here with someone accusing them of brake check but to me it was just they let foot off accelerator and regen kicked in
Regen doesn’t activate the brakes, it’s the motor acting as a generator.
Regen activates the brake light if the braking force is more than 0.3g.
I didn’t mention the brake light, I said the brakes.
When you use the brake pedal you get regen at 0.3g.

We're talking about the brake lights.
Yes we were. But the person I replied to said”activates the brakes” as did another poster.
Fair enough!
Yes it does
I have tested this at night time and brake lights come on once it kicks in to a certain level
Edit to include lights
It activates the brakes lights, not the brakes themselves.
THe discussion here is about the brake lights and that is what I meant above
You said regen activates the brakes. There was no need to delete it the comment btw..
That explains so much! I always assumed the drivers who did that are just inept and can’t drive properly.
I’ll stop giving out to them now and just do side eye as I pass them.
Id4 probably has the brake light linked to regen overly sensitive when compared to other EVs. There's no hard rule so they vary by manufacturer. Also id4 drivers are probably miserable and have the regen on maximum to make sure their cost of running is lower than the diesel car they replaced.
No "maximum" on ID.4
Its on or off
B and D mode
They're probably driving in B mode and don't know how to use it properly so they're lifting too much and the regen is kicking the brake lights on. Or they're just a shite driver and constantly tapping on the brakes. Too many people these days will pass me only to immediately dance in the brake pedal. Same sort of people to brake at the sign of an oncoming car on a straight road in daylight...
Exactly this
