Basically, the point behind assault guns is to take the chassis of any other tank and mount the most powerful cannon you can reasonably have, while sacrifing luxuries like armour and a turret.
Assault guns are best suited for breaking through fortifications, but as the war went on, started seeing use as tank destroyers.
Calling these tank destroyers isn't exactly wrong, but not the most correct (Probably because in World of Tanks and War Thunder they're all TD's).
BTW that SU-152 in the picture is located in Drzonów in the Lubusz Voivodeship, in Poland. I've been there and touched it ;). It's quite a rare tank, this one has a hole in the driver's viewing port, possibly a shell that hit it or the exit hole of it. I'm guessing that the shot only disabled the tank and the crew managed to evacuate, as the rest of the tank is in very good shape.
Assault guns are better against fortifications. Infantry support guns are for supporting infantry (duh), less suited for heavy targets. Infantry support guns tend to have higher caliber but less penetration.
AFAIK it's all about the intended target. Some can have more protection or a focus on speed, but the type of vehicle doesn't require using X amount of armor or speed.
assault guns are cool as. my fav is the tortoise. im currently painting a vindicator for 30k in graffiti. all my tanks have fozer blades bc i love military enginering vehicles too.
Same here- their weapons, uniforms, war machines and naming conventions fuck hard, it's just a massive shame all that are tied to the literal worst regime in history.
As much as i love the Strv 103 (It's my favourite tank of all time), it doesn't fit the role of an assault gun, in fact it's an MBT doctrine wise. It's meant to take out other armored vehicles, not fortifications like assault guns do.

For a second there I thought your post was a Reddit add and I got nervous XD
"so boss, what if we took the artillery cannon and just pointed it right at them?"
The line of thinking i love
Tanks! (Or any armored vehicles!) They are awesome. My favourite is the amx-13, cute, looks nice...
Yeah, my favourite is the Stridsvagn 103/S-tank :D
Based. Same. I have a (legally distinct) Lego one
How do you separate assault guns from infantry support guns, definition wise?
Assault guns are better against fortifications. Infantry support guns are for supporting infantry (duh), less suited for heavy targets. Infantry support guns tend to have higher caliber but less penetration.
Do IFGs tend to have more or less protection, more speed, etc?
AFAIK it's all about the intended target. Some can have more protection or a focus on speed, but the type of vehicle doesn't require using X amount of armor or speed.
I had thought that this was the case, glad to know someone that's knowledgable says so too!

Real Vindicator hours, I’m more a fan of the heresy era kit myself (also the Typhon) - not partial to the big dozer blade

Right there with you, have always found assault guns fascinating.
The Vindicator from 40k is one of my all time favorite fictional vehicles. It's dumb but I love it so much.

Ah that makes sense!
