Topvalu is a Japanese food brand notorious for being cheap and tasting bad. Their whisky is especially hated by many people on the Japanese internet. They say Topvalu whisky is a cheap imitation of real whisky and its taste is nothing similar to the real one.

Live in Japan. TopValu is for when you must survive but will hate yourself the whole time.

This, and it is also often associated, among university-age young men, with bad-taste jokes, about intoxication and poor judgment

"Shininasai" is the authoritative, polite imperative, too. It's the register a parent would use when telling their child to do their homework. Which makes it even more hilarious.

So “please kindly die” is a more accurate translation?

It’s more like the way superiors talk to their subordinates. Like a parent giving you a command “clean your room,NOW”. In the anime it’s kinda just part of how misato talks to shinji and asuka so the tweet reflects that characterization.

You would not use it with superiors, strangers or colleagues. It also sounds kinda feminine

It’s funny because it makes no sense. Misato is very attached to Shinji. She is upset to hear Shinji say that he doesn’t want to exist in End of Evangelion. She even kisses him as she slumps down dying from a gunshot wound.

Probably because it's a new joke, not the same three recycled goonslop jokes that get circulated in the fandom.
