  • Researchers claim the phrase ‘mutilation’ is stigmatising, while widespread condemnation of practice is based on ‘Western sensationalism’

This quip by Charles James Napier came to mind, referring to the practice of sati (widow burning) in India:

Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs.

  • Original paper:

    https://jme.bmj.com/content/early/2025/12/14/jme-2025-110961

Engaging in some excellent whataboutism and can't criticize it while white, by "researchers" from
University of Cambridge, University of Bristol,  Uppsala University, Malmö University, University of Lausanne, Institute of Philosophy, Spanish National Research Council, Universitat de València, Université libre de Bruxelles and Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

Lmao. Did that paper miss its 2016 deadline or something?

What a collection of stupid arguments. Excuze us for considering genital mutilation as a big deal worth making some communities uncomfortable.

If FGM is often 'single-out', it's because it picked up steam in the discourse when women that suffered it share their trauma. They're not going to talk about male circumsion in the West, that's not the subject, not their story!

And it's so disingenuous because everyone horrified by it does make the connection anyway, and agrees that circumsing male kids is bad too, even if the mutilation is less severe. It definitely shouldn't be normalized and maybe even banned too, no issue being consistent here!

I hope everyone that put their names to see this drivel will tank their careers

  • Words can't explain how tired I am.

  • It seems like most systems just have to go at this point.
This would only a few years ago have been unfathomable, now it is predictable, but no less horrifying.
My guess is most of us expect basically every ethical and cultural standards opposite to be actively promoted at this point.
    This is war.

  • I am coming to really really despise words such as nuance

  • And then one day, for absolutely no reason at all...

    Can’t come soon enough

  • Ah, the western academia being overly politically correct at the expense of common sense. Nothing new here

This is way beyond that, it 's like trying to justify and give nuance to slavery

  • Oh hell no! Wtf is this?

What's next? Beheading should not be considered murder and is stigmatising?

  • The tribespeople of some islands near new ginuea used to eat the brains of their deceased relatives (and unfortunately acquired kuru aka prion disease in the process, but fortunately bringing it to the attention of medicine).

Anyway my point being that I fully expect that eating the brains of your deceased relative should be considered quite acceptable therefore as well. It’s far less harmful than brutally and savagely cutting a clit0ri$ or !abi@ off an unconsenting young lady, and it’s terribly racist to suggest otherwise!

All you academic (words redacted) that think FGM is acceptible, please go “eat some brains”!

    Edit

  • I assume just lost his job
