“Well, because some sad sack got their cronies to free up my hosting schedule next year, I now find myself with plenty of free time to pursue public office. Thank you sad sack”
Resurrect his character from the colbert report and have him run a real bid, superpacs and commercials on Fox and all. Start the day after his last late night show. Trump would legitimately call for his execution.
There's an interesting timeline where, in place of fake dems and dems who get concussed so hard they turn conservative, we get a Republican candidate Colbert who wins based on the right taking his parody personality to heart.
Hell, these idiots root for Homelander and still can't see through diapered donnie, imagine what someone with actual charisma and an IQ above 75 could do to them.
Yes, but he did it for attention and to grow his brand. He never actually thought he'd win as evidenced by the piss poor job they did staffing the white house in his first term.
Sure, he did it to grow his bullshit brand, but I’m sure in the back of his garbage filled mind he thought that if he actually somehow pulled it off, he’d use the office to get even, because he’s a little bitch.
He can make another super PAC that wants to Colbert to run and campaign with that but as he himself Stephen Colbert he of course legally would not be filing to run
Btw the Colbert report super pac bit was the most educational political TV/journalism I've ever experienced
I'm pretty sure he did this already during his colbert report days.
It was during the primary campaigns, at least. He did it while also doing legit journalism. He was teaching viewers about campaign finance laws and how much influence campaign donors and political action committees could have on politicians and their campaigns. Would have his lawyer on regularly for segments too.
About once a year, I think about that and then go watch it. Cracks me up every time. He was always SO GOOD at staying in character but that was one if those few times he couldn't hold on. It was marvelous.
He eventually tried running as a Democratic candidate in South Carolina but the party shut him down. It showed everyone how much gatekeeping there is to even get on the primary ballot.
Honestly, I think he’d do pretty well if he ran sincerely as an Eisenhower Republican (rather than the Fox News Colbert Report version people are joking about).
Running as a Dem he’d just be one more Hollywood political dilettante, but if he ran as a sincere, progressive, moderate Catholic seeking to bring the GOP back to Lincoln, I really do think he could fill a hole in the market.
This is a fascinating angle. Vance and Stephen both running for the Catholic vote, honestly. I want the market flooded with voices speaking for genuine american issues- policy to fix this shit.
He’s on record as a dem supporter and fundraiser. It’s also not so easy to run without machine support from the party. The Republican Party loathes him even if he could get votes.
I dunno. He's an actual Christian which might tip them off. They only like their Christianity served cold with a side of Botox and anti trans rhetoric.
The man with the functionally photographic memory for quoting literature (be it Lord of the Rings or the Bible) would likely get in trouble for quoting the "liberal, woke" parts. Not quoting either line about Sodom & Gomorrah. Instead focusing on the parts about the beardo hippie running around feeding all the moochers without properly drug testing them first, and kicking good job creators out of the temple.
All sarcasm aside, if more Christians managed some Christlike behavior instead of banking on their worship attendance record, it'd be a lot easier to take em seriously. Colbert seems to walk the walk. It's not the highest bar, but his compassion and continued commitment to charitable giving in the face of ongoing tragedies alone sets him apart from every other "as a Christian" facing celebrities.
They fell for it back then. In the early episodes, there were people in the live studio audience who didn’t know he was mocking right wingers. It was very awkward for them.
He should run as a republican and then have Jon Stewart run as a democrat. People would crush the primaries just to see the matchup in the general election
Basically the West Wing, which seemed like a fantasy at the time, and now seems like a completely whimsical, absurdly naive show. It no longer has any basis in reality whatsoever.
It makes me sad, because in and of itself, the show is an opiate to progressivism.
"Gee, wouldn't it be nice if we could find our Jed Bartlet," says a "Democratic" Party apparatus who continues to alienate, aggravate, and spurn "new blood" (and new ideas) within the party that might fuck up or threaten their investment portfolios.
Don’t forget just how hard they work to “avoid alienating moderates.” The party is run by moderates who constantly court those who would formerly be labeled as “liberal republicans.”
Colbert is likely a better policy wonk, but both share a love of all humans and a belief that there is nothing wrong with America that cannot be fixed by what is right with America.
"Listen fuckers! Welcome to the seventh circle of hell, also known as The Whitehouse Briefing Room.
If I have to stand here for one more minute and explain the stupefying minutiae of President Colbert's state visit to Great Britain, my head is going to explode into a fine red mist that will cover all of you and finally give this room a decent coat of paint!
Al didnt help himself by rolling over and resigning so easily. He should have been like "Yup, it was a joke, time to move on." It also didnt help that his own party members turned on him.
I'm honestly pissed at them for not running because "lol we're only comedians" have you seen the current president?? Let's just get someone with a heart in first
Electing a comedian has worked out pretty fucking great for Ukraine. Organizing a defense of his country from a massive invasion while rooting out corruption that would kneecap those efforts and juggling the diplomatic stress of trying to get help from a world that is mercurial about supporting them.
If we had a leader nearly as competent, we wouldn't be in decline.
How about we just go to "US President isn't an entry level position (politically)". If you want to be US president, whether you are a celebrity or not, start with something else and prove yourself.
I think it would have kept Eisenhower out of the white house also. Definitely Trump.
I never understood why conservatives think it's a bad thing to be a career politician. I want a career politician to be President. I want someone to know what they're doing. There's no other career in the world that people want somebody completely inexperienced in such an important role.
There’s a movie with the premise of a Colbert type winning the presidency starring Robin Williams called Man of the Year. It breaks down this premise and why we need commentators really well.
Dude, If that idiot that ran that awful apprentice show can do it, so can this guy. And by a fucking landslide. Come on Americans, Let's treat maga like they do they opposition.
To those who say no celebrities for President: I understand the feeling. We all want someone whip-smart and transformational in the office. But consider the top qualities needed in a Democratic President:
Ability to win, and win big. Nothing matters if you lose. And if you win small with no majority, it stops the bleeding but doesn't heal the wound. In a national election, prior name recognition is huge (one of the reasons Trump won to begin with).
Moral character. If we don't restore it to the office, we're toast eventually.
Ability to utilize the bully pulpit.
Ability to competently govern.
Number four is, essentially, outsourceable. Anyone reading this could be a successful President if willing to put ego aside and outsource the job to your team.
I'd argue #1-3 are much much more important in a candidate, and #3 is where we've imploded and opened the door to Trump winning again. Biden was incapable of persuasion or guiding the media cycle. He couldn't set the agenda, couldn't debate, couldn't counter the onslaught of disinformation from the Republicans. We're a country living in two different realities now. The best candidate Democrats could put up would be someone who is unhateable, unimpeachable, and captivating and convincing to listen to. Colbert is at the top of that very very short list!
There's a reason Gavin Newsome is leading the conversation despite the fact he's also widely disliked: he knows how to make and win an argument. But I'd argue Colbert does that even better, is much more likable, has no real skeletons, and won't be weighed down by a record, since he has no governing record. I'd love to see him in the primary. See how it goes!
Zelensky became famous for playing a president and now he’s revered as a fine leader defending against Russian aggression. Previous profession is important but so is the character of a politician.
You’re right. #4 is the least important of the lot because it’s not a solo job. Most of the actual governance starts and ends with WH staff; the president is mostly the mouthpiece of the administration.
Presidents don’t need to be perfect legislators, either. Democrats haven’t understood this since at least 2008. Legislating is not in the president’s job description. The role of the executive is separate from the legislative for a reason.
“I understand why you’d want me to,” he quipped to the Slate audience, many of whom submitted the question to the hosts.
“I’d have to discuss with my faith leader and my family to see if, once my service on the Late Show ends in May, if I could be of some greater service to this nation that I love so much."
Colbert then joked, “Who am I to say I should run? But if I hear the call of the Lord...”
That is so incredibly not a no. That is way less of a no than I thought he’d say. Damn. He might actually up and do it.
Yep. He's 100% making fun of other politicians when they say stuff like this. There's probably a million other things he would rather do with his life.
Colbert is probably smarter than just about any candidate the DNC could come up with. Plus he’s a young (relatively) straight white man from the south, grew up working class and has high name recognition. Who else checks all those boxes? He’d crush it.
Regardless of what you think about his politics, as a Canadian, I’m glad our Prime Minister is someone who has a masters and doctorate in economics and is kind of a boring guy.
God yes. This is my plea now as an American. Please make politics boring again. (Unfortunately I think being an adult means you can’t just ignore it entirely, but I would settle for not being sick about it all the time)
I don’t necessarily agree with all of the liberal policies but I can agree with you on this. Carney is leagues ahead of even Trudeau. It’s a breath of fresh air.
Yeah I mean I think of all celebrities people like Stephen Colbert would actually be great for politics
He may be a comedian, but he is also a very experienced political reporter even if he mostly did it to parody it. The man is incredibly intelligent and probably has a better grasp of civics than 90% of our country
Seriously! Any senator or representative who’s been a repeat guest on his show will take his calls, too. He knows people now. That’s not nothing to sneeze at.
I don't know who's been worse for our country, the standard corrupt career politician or the celebrity amateur politicians (Schwarzenegger, Al Franken, etc.). Not including Trump, who is a trash CEO and businessman turned celebrity turned politician.
Those pictures were his Benghazi, in that any investigation would’ve cleared him, but the smear campaign would never die regardless. Chuck Schumer shouldn’t have forced him to resign, though. His presidential ambitions dying in the cradle was already punishment enough.
Before Trump, for the most part, celebrity politicians range from mediocre (Schwarzenegger, Ventura) to actually pretty good (Zelenskyy). So long as they enter into politics with the right attitude.
They both or either would dominate the primary. Dems are running 17% approval, not net approval, total. The party is a dumpster fire and Colbert or Stewart could not only win, but show the democratic party how to govern again. I dont think either of them would be as servile to corporate power as dems are now.
He should run as a republican but as his persona from the Colbert report. MAGA is too stupid to understand satire and I’d bet he’d peel off a significant chunk of their base
This would be VERY similar to Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s story. Not quite but still, a comedian running for President and having a solid chance would be just as crazy as Trump being President.
Usually people that talk about their faith as much as he does annoy me, but for some reason he doesn’t. Possibly because he speaks about The Silmarillion with essentially the same reverence lol.
Well, think it's safe to say Colbert would not have sex with underaged girls or fire hundreds of thousands of federal government employees for no reason or throw paper towels at Puerto Ricans
Jesus, Americans really have a problem with wanting completely unqualified individuals to run for president
Sure Colbert is a great late night host and entertaining, but c’mon how can such an individual be even considered as (the most) qualified to be the leader of the free world?
As in these are good men and while other presidents have been good men, they find themselves placed in very difficult situations.
Namely making decisions/ or not being able to make decisions that would get people killed - regardless of the morals involved.
One acute example is - Barack Obama gave the go for OBL to be taken out. Yes, it had to be done but he had to make that decision to end another human being’s life.
I’d hate for Colbert or Stewart to be in that position.
No. Fuck that. I’m so tired of these celebrities and business people with zero government experience thinking they can walk in and run a country via a public sector role.
No.
I love Cobert, but no. He can run for local positions first and learn. You don’t just walk into a job like this and act like you’re qualified just because you’re on TV or in the movies. That’s how we got into this shit in the first place.
He should start posting about running just to get under the current presidents skin.
“Well, because some sad sack got their cronies to free up my hosting schedule next year, I now find myself with plenty of free time to pursue public office. Thank you sad sack”
"Perhaps Trump should retire to spend more time with other people's children. "
Every prisoner is somebody’s child. So I support it in that sense.
…or Ivanka
Resurrect his character from the colbert report and have him run a real bid, superpacs and commercials on Fox and all. Start the day after his last late night show. Trump would legitimately call for his execution.
There's an interesting timeline where, in place of fake dems and dems who get concussed so hard they turn conservative, we get a Republican candidate Colbert who wins based on the right taking his parody personality to heart.
Hell, these idiots root for Homelander and still can't see through diapered donnie, imagine what someone with actual charisma and an IQ above 75 could do to them.
A good chance Colbert pulls off this antichrist character that they warn everyone about.
They would never fall for it, Colbert looks nothing like Obama! /s
I agree
That is ….. oh my god, I love the idea!!!!!
I second that!
Colbert/Stewart 28’ just start spreading it.
or I guess if just purely to get at trump Colbert/Kimmel 28’
Pretty sure that's where Trump started too.
Donnie made his decision after Seth Meyers roasted him a new asshole at the White House correspondents dinner.
Yes, but he did it for attention and to grow his brand. He never actually thought he'd win as evidenced by the piss poor job they did staffing the white house in his first term.
Sad part is his first term he had people actually able to tell him no.
Sure, he did it to grow his bullshit brand, but I’m sure in the back of his garbage filled mind he thought that if he actually somehow pulled it off, he’d use the office to get even, because he’s a little bitch.
Obama roasted him as well.
Haha yeah of course I forgot.
But do it as his character from Colbert Report.
Could make his show legally dicy wrt campaignv finance laws etc
I believe if he hasn’t officially declared as a candidate he’s in the clear. If I remember correctly he had a bit on the Colbert Report years ago.
He can make another super PAC that wants to Colbert to run and campaign with that but as he himself Stephen Colbert he of course legally would not be filing to run
Btw the Colbert report super pac bit was the most educational political TV/journalism I've ever experienced
Colbert should run as a Republican
This is absolutely what he should do.
Was that the "I am America and you can too" era?
(And So Can You)
I'm also a big fan of Jon Stewart's book America (The Book)
I have the “Teacher’s edition” or whatever it’s called that has added notes by a professor to correct various things.
The book itself is great, but the correction notes put it over the top.
And his Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavour, I Am Americone Dream and So Can You.
I miss those days
That book slaps so fucking hard.
we needed early 2000s stewart crew in 2020 :(
I just said in another comment his super PAC bit was the most educational political TV/journalism I've ever seen
I think it won an Emmy for it. It was incredible work
I learned about Super PACs because of Colbert
He was told it was illegal, because it was sponsored by Doritos. Oh how the turns table. Doritos could make a PAC…
He had a super PAC. Notable donors included Liqa Madiq and his wife, who goes by her maiden name, Munchma Quchi
About once a year, I think about that and then go watch it. Cracks me up every time. He was always SO GOOD at staying in character but that was one if those few times he couldn't hold on. It was marvelous.
https://youtu.be/YwSFIUv4ILM?si=sP2iQIOBsaqS6fH3
Brought to you by Doritos
This. That was Colbert at his most brilliant.
He eventually tried running as a Democratic candidate in South Carolina but the party shut him down. It showed everyone how much gatekeeping there is to even get on the primary ballot.
He should run as a republican as his Colbert Report character.
It's pronounced Report.
I feel like I’m saying it right
Say it righter.
We need new voices in our country.
He’s on record as a dem supporter and fundraiser. It’s also not so easy to run without machine support from the party. The Republican Party loathes him even if he could get votes.
Sounds familiar…
While in character as Colbert from the Colbert Show
The sad part is theyd fall for it, too.
He doesn’t do the ham-fisted punch down stuff. I don’t wanna sound like I dislike the idea, but he has too much class.
Fundies don’t consider Catholics to be Christians 😄
Fine by me!!
They fell for it back then. In the early episodes, there were people in the live studio audience who didn’t know he was mocking right wingers. It was very awkward for them.
He already did that in 2008 in his home state of North Carolina, he wasn’t able to qualify for the ballot.
South Carolina
Could Stephen Colbert run as a democrat while "Stephen Colbert" runs as a Republican?
Exactly, why not both? Guaranteed to get a decent person in that way!
Can’t wait to watch that debate!
"Even Stephens"!!!!
He probably could.
Personally I think he should challenge Lindsay Graham or Tim Scott for a senate seat
South Carolina doesn’t elect straight Senators.
Senate, House, either or. Get him in there.
Hearing him weave Tolkien and the bible into impassioned speeches would be peak.
The Americone Dream
His b&j flavor does go pretty hard
You know I like Colbert on tv way more than Fallon, but I’ve always much preferred Fallon’s B&J flavor. Might be my overall favorite tbh
He should run as a republican and then have Jon Stewart run as a democrat. People would crush the primaries just to see the matchup in the general election
It's the debate we all want to see.
Moderated by Conan O'Brien.
https://youtu.be/17RVOQRMMYs?si=-QsRqACROPUnWt0T
Stop! I can only get so hard!
I’m as a hard as a diamond in an ice storm right now
Me too!
Can they be each other’s running mate?
And then appoint each other as their VP
It would be absolutely hilarious if he gets kicked off the air but wins the presidency.
I bet the GOP would complain and try to say he isn't eligible because he used his show for campaigning.
It would never happen but Stewart-Colbert would be a winner winner chicken dinner in my heart.
Intelligent men of conscience leading the country?! It’ll never happen. But just think of how great America COULD be if that happened.
Basically the West Wing, which seemed like a fantasy at the time, and now seems like a completely whimsical, absurdly naive show. It no longer has any basis in reality whatsoever.
I've been wanting to rewatch it, but I just know it will make me sad
It makes me sad, because in and of itself, the show is an opiate to progressivism.
"Gee, wouldn't it be nice if we could find our Jed Bartlet," says a "Democratic" Party apparatus who continues to alienate, aggravate, and spurn "new blood" (and new ideas) within the party that might fuck up or threaten their investment portfolios.
Don’t forget just how hard they work to “avoid alienating moderates.” The party is run by moderates who constantly court those who would formerly be labeled as “liberal republicans.”
It made me sad and angry. I couldn't enjoy it anymore.
Colbert is likely a better policy wonk, but both share a love of all humans and a belief that there is nothing wrong with America that cannot be fixed by what is right with America.
Make Al Franken Chief of Staff while we’re at it!
Lewis Black as Press Secretary.
I will now take your moronic questions!"
Immediately started reading it in his voice
I totally read that in his voice.
amazing
Remember when something that was a SCANDAL? ugh.
Al didnt help himself by rolling over and resigning so easily. He should have been like "Yup, it was a joke, time to move on." It also didnt help that his own party members turned on him.
His party steamrolled him. He's said he regrets it.
Only for Democrats apparently
They hold their own accountable (mostly).
Even when they didn’t do what they were accused of.
Mandy Patinkin in that cabinet, as well
When he negotiates with Putin: "I am the secretary of defense. You killed my father. Prepare to die!"
For real, at this point I just want someone with morals who can delegate to qualified experts and steps back for big picture direction.
I'm honestly pissed at them for not running because "lol we're only comedians" have you seen the current president?? Let's just get someone with a heart in first

They’d get killed
PFFFFT! As if a television personality would ever be elected POTUS.
Ronald Reagan? The Actor?
No more celebrities please

Eisenhower was supreme commander of the allied forces during WWII and 5 star general. How could that possibly not qualify?
There’s a movie with the premise of a Colbert type winning the presidency starring Robin Williams called Man of the Year. It breaks down this premise and why we need commentators really well.
Unfortunately, really not a good movie.
Americans are seriously so stupid
Absolutely not. Haven't we learned not to elect television personalities.
No thanks. Done with celebrities. An insane take.
I mean, he does have more qualifications than the current one.
Seriously? In what way have any of his shows been a game show? Has he bankrupted even a single casino?
How many kids did he rape? The numbers are just not adding up. Colbert with a pitiful 0.
He probably did a panty raid. But he probably bought those.
Dude, If that idiot that ran that awful apprentice show can do it, so can this guy. And by a fucking landslide. Come on Americans, Let's treat maga like they do they opposition.
wait the dude from the apprentice was a president??

Yep. He's 100% making fun of other politicians when they say stuff like this. There's probably a million other things he would rather do with his life.
This needs context. Reading a comic’s words is usually not the same as hearing and seeing them say them. My bet is there was a side of tongue-in-cheek
Colbert is probably smarter than just about any candidate the DNC could come up with. Plus he’s a young (relatively) straight white man from the south, grew up working class and has high name recognition. Who else checks all those boxes? He’d crush it.
no thanks to more celebrities running for office.
I say this as a fan.
Regardless of what you think about his politics, as a Canadian, I’m glad our Prime Minister is someone who has a masters and doctorate in economics and is kind of a boring guy.
im canadian too. make politics boring again.
As an American, I agree.
God yes. This is my plea now as an American. Please make politics boring again. (Unfortunately I think being an adult means you can’t just ignore it entirely, but I would settle for not being sick about it all the time)
Following the chaos of Post-Franco Spain one Spanish candidate campaigned on making Spanish government boring again. I think about it a lot.
I don’t necessarily agree with all of the liberal policies but I can agree with you on this. Carney is leagues ahead of even Trudeau. It’s a breath of fresh air.
Yeah I mean I think of all celebrities people like Stephen Colbert would actually be great for politics

Seriously! Any senator or representative who’s been a repeat guest on his show will take his calls, too. He knows people now. That’s not nothing to sneeze at.
I think it’s a good policy. But, I’ve got to admit. It’s worked well for Ukraine.
Zelinsky was a comedian and has shown more integrity than 99% of US elected officials.
Celebrity status has nothing to do with it. The inability for the common man to see integrity vs grifter is the problem.
Why not? Genuinely. If the celeb is not a sociopath and hires sane people to advise I have no issue with it.
Americans love celebrities. I say this as a person.
It's not a solely American phenomenon.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_actor-politicians
Zelenskyy is a famous example.
Turns out it’s hard to get elected without having “name recognition” and it’s hard to have name recognition without being a “celebrity”
All national-level politicians are celebrities.
I absolutely agree with this statement.
I don't know who's been worse for our country, the standard corrupt career politician or the celebrity amateur politicians (Schwarzenegger, Al Franken, etc.). Not including Trump, who is a trash CEO and businessman turned celebrity turned politician.
Al Franken was a pretty decent senator. He had problems with being weird with women, but was better than 90% of dem senators, maybe even more.
I won't rule out anyone who genuinely wants to make the US and the world better, whether celebrity or not. Can't be any worse than what we have now.
I mean... It worked for Zelenskyy.
He is American....so can you!!
Stewart / Colbert would crush it in 28’
Jon and Colbert. heroes we dont deserve, but need in this dire times
The Stewart-Colbert ticket would FUCKING OWN!!!!! The power couple we need.
Ive waited my whole life for a Stewart/Colbert run
Jon should run over Colbert. He would be the better candidate.
They both or either would dominate the primary. Dems are running 17% approval, not net approval, total. The party is a dumpster fire and Colbert or Stewart could not only win, but show the democratic party how to govern again. I dont think either of them would be as servile to corporate power as dems are now.
Who would have thought that shutting down the government knowing you had no backbone would hurt them.
Then going out and pretending they are fighters.
Solid Political chops
SC with a side of JS please
Perhaps in Congress, just how Al Franken brought common sense to the Senate.
We already have a joke in office why not bring someone in that make some good ones
Zelensky proved that comedians can be great presidents!
He should run as a republican but as his persona from the Colbert report. MAGA is too stupid to understand satire and I’d bet he’d peel off a significant chunk of their base
He's too pure for that business. No one wants to walk into a radioactive den
He would make a good president or senator. Principled, smart, witty, charismatic, and progressive. He cares about regular working people.
He absolutely should run and honestly not even as a joke, but definitely at least as a joke, trump would lose his MIND.
So he’s running against Newsome,Kamala & AOC ?
The whole thing is one big joke anyway, why not?
Stewart/Colbert 2028.
Godammit no more fucking celebrities
Who exactly is asking for Colbert to run for anything? Or any celebrity for that matter??
Did he adress the dead man walking comments?
Our Americone Dream Come True
Fuck it, why not. Couldn't do a worse job than the current guy
He should run republican as his Colbert Report character.
He’d win in a landslide.
I mean… why not at this point?
Yay some more celebrity "leaders." Reagan Zelensky trump what the hell is up with this. Everything is a farce
No more tv personalities people, please
All word leaders should be prior comedians like Zelenski
Have we not learned anything about electing TV personalities as president?
Well, think it's safe to say Colbert would not have sex with underaged girls or fire hundreds of thousands of federal government employees for no reason or throw paper towels at Puerto Ricans
Absolutely, but TV and politics should not be mixed.
Yeah maybe we should stop voting celebrities into positions of power.
We should stop expecting entertainers to lead us.
Some people are more suited to stirring the pot and keeping people honest rather than thrusting them into a position of leadership.
Trump was one of these guys. He was far more liberal and even a voice for women’s rights back in the day before he tried to take the presidency.
This is the problem of populism
Need to stop normalizing this crap
Jesus, Americans really have a problem with wanting completely unqualified individuals to run for president
Sure Colbert is a great late night host and entertaining, but c’mon how can such an individual be even considered as (the most) qualified to be the leader of the free world?
I would hate for that to happen.
I don’t want Colbert to run. Stewart on the other hand…
No.
