As much as I feel you, having played this game the day it came out as an adult, I think he was commenting on the legacy of the game and not its age. Super Mario Galaxy is a classic on the same level as 64, World, SMB3, and the other titans of the series.
I feel ya, although as a millennial who grew up in the heyday of NES and knowing how much of a benchmark World on SNES was, I really wanted the second movie to be Super Mario World, at least before they went to Galaxy. And really lean into how huge the introduction of Yoshi was for us, with a maybe a story that highlights Yoshi.
But then again I realize World is already a 35-year-old game that much of Gen Z and younger don’t know, and even Galaxy is already 18+ years ago. And I figure that, much like the first movie, this sequel will draw from throughout Mario history.
Actually, I really agree with you on the Yoshi front. I don’t necessarily think World has a compelling enough story to adapt into a movie — I think it truly shined in pushing the gameplay to a new level much more than telling a story.
Back to Yoshi— I forgot that the movie had the post-credits scene with the egg, and I don’t know how they will resolve that. Yoshi wasn’t even in the first SMG game, and it’s going to be pretty hard explaining his inclusion before being whisked away to the stars. I think they were seduced into the Galaxy universe because Rosalina is so popular (and the existential-crisis Luma was loved in the first movie), but haven’t really considered anything else.
You raise a good point, World’s strength was in the gameplay mechanics it added to the Mario lore more than the story, and Galaxy has more story potential to mine for a movie.
Maybe ideally this sequel can largely pull from Galaxy’s story while also introducing Yoshi and eggs in a way that honors the fun of World’s gameplay.
It’s definitely the implication they want you to take away, without saying anything that could be legally construed as a promise or commitment to doing so
I just wanna have a good time and turn my brain off when I watch this movie. The first one was pretty good and I don’t even play the games, I had to be caught up by my kids about some of the lore
The first (new) Mario movie was too close to the games. Having lore about power ups seemed a little too faithful IMO.
It’s like if a live action movie of Bubble Bobble had an explanation of points and high scores.
The Sonic movies (if you remove the cheaper to film human heavy parts) did a good job of bridging the gap between the games, characters and making something that makes sense as a movie.
By all means get annoyed if there’s a lore heavy game with an adaptation that ignores it to do its own thing (Witcher, Halo, etc). But Mario lore was always a thin justification for the gameplay - nothing wrong with that.
Which is all to say, I don’t think we need to stick to the source material so hard in this case.
I mean, it’ll probably be fine, but is Jack Black contractually permitted to say anything else?
He probably gets a cut from the box office. So I think it’s more business than legal obligations
“Classic Wii game” has me reeling. Im ancient
"I don't feel so good mr stark"

The gap between Galaxy and the movie is longer than the gap from World to Galaxy. He's talking about the age, old man.
I talked to a new coworker about the Wii and he said he was 3 years old when it came out.. I was 19. When he said that it made my knees hurt.
What hurts is people decades younger than you say they feel old.
That just put a fucking dagger in me.
It came out almost 20 years ago
And it is still one of the best games I’ve ever played.
Dude I was an adult when the Wii first came out, I may blow away into the wind at this point
It was released 19 years ago 😬
Taylor Swift says fans of Taylor Swift will be “very pleased” with the new Taylor Swift album
I think the point here is that the Mario Galaxy movie is hopefully faithful to the Mario Galaxy Wii game specifically
I like the idea of people out there saying “they better not fuck with the plot of Mario Galaxy.”
theres literally a grief-induced memory repression backstory for princess rosalina thats presented to the player as an interactive storybook
also the joke from the first movie about lumas being gleefully suicidal is completely canon, it comes from how u interact with them in-game
It’s definitely the implication they want you to take away, without saying anything that could be legally construed as a promise or commitment to doing so
Limited motion controls?
At one point, Mario will try and use a remote control and break his television screen by mistake.
I was a huge fan of the game when it came out in 2007. I don’t see how they will please me as a Middle aged man.
Once I heard them using Gusty Gardens in the trailer, I was all in.
"Classic Wii game"
cries in Commodore64
"Classic Wii game" come on man now I feel like a fossil.

Jee I was expecting him to say it was awful and no one will like it
Unless they recast Pratt, doubt it.

Oh the wii game is classic now?!
What about those who aren’t fans of the game?
Oh if you weren’t a fan of the game you’ll be absolutely furious about this movie.
Well, I'm not a fan of suspense movies.. So I don't go see those. You following me?
Why, did they decide to have someone other than Chris Pratt voice Mario?
omg can jack black pls retire I really can’t watch anything with him :/// dude is prob such a sweet heart but fuck he ruins anything he’s in imo
He was Bowser in the first movie and did a really great job…
oh I bet! he always does a good job if you like jack black characters
Hell, I even liked him as Steve way more than I thought i would
