He was actually banned from the lot, so they had to kill off his character because Paramount was just like, we are not dealing with this shit anymore get him the fuck off a lot
He would hide in other people‘s trailers, people who were not on the show he was on, to take a nap
He clearly is over the hill too. Lacks a filter. Probably has memory issues. Lorne trusted Bill to be with it but not Chevy. Bill was with it and contributed to live laughs. Chevy did get the last shot though in the special as he charged aimlessly through the cast and guests on stage looking lost. And I think he is the most important person in terms of the success of the show and so that's fitting. The early icon who turned into a movie legend for a time, deservedly. Apparently, Gilda Radner's own grandmother asked her once: "Do you really know him?" About Chevy during the height of his fame. That says something.
Chevy was pretty good in Community but it's wild that he kind of wasn't acting, he played a curmudgeonly asshole and that'a basically how all his costars describe him on set.
That makes sense. I listened to a podcast episode he did a couple of years ago. I think it was Marc Maron's...He had his wife with him apparently to help clarify things given his memory issues...But he would clearly get agitated about timelines and the order of things in his career.
Marc: "Did that movie come out before Three Amigos?"
Chevy: "Who cares."
I disagree. if you watch a movie with a young Chevy Chase in it, I guarantee you that the IMDb will be like "and these are the directors or actors who quit working with him because of how he behaved on the movie or refused to do the movie at all based on his previous bad behavior."
Chase’s wife, Jayni Chase, revealed that Chevy was told “up until that day that there were two bits, they were going back and forth.”
“And then, all of the sudden, ‘No, there’s no bit,'” she shared.
Love the idea of him seething in the audience after finding out last minute he wouldn't be on stage.
If I had to guess I'd assume it was originally a given that he'd be part of the show but nobody wanted to write him into their sketch or be on stage with him.
I don’t know the particulars of SNL but it’s a common revenge tactic in this industry to lead someone on and keep them hanging until the last minute, then disappoint them.
Is he surprised though? He's been an absolute monster to everyone he's ever worked with and people in public who have had the misfortune to encounter him.
John Belushi had to break up a fight between him and Bill Murray because he made a comment about Bill's wife.
He sexually harassed female staff members on the set of SNL, in front of Will Ferral and Lorne. That kind of behavior puts the show at risk for lawsuits and I can totally see why Lorne doesn't want him back.
Chase also used racial slurs and told racist jokes on the set of Community, to the point where Donald Glover had to complain about him, and Joel McHale got into a physical altercation with him on set.
Nobody wants you anymore, Chevy, go cry alone somewhere.
He was also so terrible on the set of Christmas Vacation that Chris Columbus quit as director. Lucky for him John Hughes saw he was talented and he got to direct Home Alone.
‘Wait a second. You’re the director?’ And I said, ‘Yeah…I’m directing the film.’ And he said to me the most surreal, bizarre thing. I still haven’t been able to make any sense out of it. He said, ‘Oh, I thought you were a drummer.’ I said, ‘Uhh, okay. Let’s start talking about the film again.’
Im an old guy and hadn’t heard this until I read about how he was almost in Steely Dan a few years back and it blew my mind. Then I started thinking about what a snobby twat Donald Fagen has always been and the whole thing made sense.
Which might have worked as a joke after Columbus was talking for maybe 5 minutes. But after 30-40 minutes of one person talking about their vision for the movie and the other person says nothing and then pulls out that joke it just comes across as jerky. Like you had been holding that line in the chamber the whole time and just waiting for the "best" moment to use it without actually caring what the person was saying.
He sexually harassed female staff members on the set of SNL, in front of Will Ferral and Lorne. That kind of behavior puts the show at risk for lawsuits
Chevy is certainly a fucking creep for that, but I feel like that's downplaying the fact that those lawsuits would only ever exist because Lorne is also a spineless coward who let that behaviour happen in front of him and never said shit.
I agree with everything you're saying, I just really don't want people to get it twisted; Lorne doesn't distance himself from these people because he's moral, it's because they expose him for the awful things he let go by as a boss, especially in the 80's.
I noticed that he mentioned that Garrett Morris and Laraine Newman got to be on stage but why not him? Felt like a subtext of, “Why did those second-rate losers get to participate and not me?” Probably not coincidentally, a black man and a woman.
If you’re the kind of asshole who is a racist POS to Donald Glover and Joel McHale of all people needs to punch your lights out, you don’t deserve accolades. He is the most awful man by nearly all accounts of people that worked with him.
Crazy that Chevy Chase would get into physical fight with Joel McHale. Joel McHale is a former tight end for the Washington Huskies football team when they were good and still in incredibly good shape. Chevy is also almost 30 years older.
I thought she was awesome at the time but even the shittiest Victoria Jackson the cast ever produced doesn’t deserve to be surprise brained by a bombastic has-been.
Is he that unaware of himself? His reputation? I understand being upset, who wouldn’t be regardless of the circumstances, but at the end of the article, he literally asks why he wasn’t invited? Dude, look in the mirror.
He’s a rich boy, Ivy League prick. Then he got famous for an entire schtick in comedy that was him being a smarmy prick. It was funny as hell before the internet and we learned that he wasn’t really acting. I still love “Fletch”, “Foul Play”, “Caddyshack”, and “Christmas Vacation” though. Just seems like he could never turn it off…just like rich boy, smarmy, Ivy League pricks.
Christmas Vacation is funny but I always end up feeling bad for the neighbors. Okay, yeah, they’re hipster doofuses but they mind their own business while Chevy is the neighbor from Hell
Exactly. You can explain it to them like they’re five and then they’ll nod and seem like they’re getting it and then follow up with “ok but why was I not invited tho?”
Guy spent his whole career burning every bridge he could. He heard the feedback, endured the sackings, read the same articles we all did describing his behaviour, and never figured out how to treat his colleagues even 5% better.
Show business is full of jerks and big egos. For Chase to be so well-known for so long as an asshole, that must mean he’s especially brutal. Lorne Michaels doesn’t have a good reputation either, but folks are apparently willing to deal with him, and not Chase. Says a lot. And now he wants to play the pity-me, sad old man position? Fuck off Chevy, no one’s buying it.
He did get a nice shoutout from Bill Murray during the show, iirc - and he was arguably the biggest asshole to him out of everyone during his time there.
They gave him a shoutout during Weekend Update that night crediting Chase as one of the best WU hosts of SNL history. He ought to be honored they even did that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Had he actually played a role in the sketch, I’m not sure people would have even cheered for him.
When I see these stories about Chevy I always think of that one Community scene with the metatextual text from Jeff to Pierce(Chevy), that people love him and care about him but he if doesn’t change his behavior, he’s going to push them away and end up alone.
Dialogue that reflected the cast reaching their breaking point with him.
It doesn't help when he has a boatload of fans that are willing to overlook any of the bad he's done and are quick to defend him in other spaces. Which, of course, is true of many terrible people
I can’t think of another cast member who got criticized for their behavior more than Chevy Chase. Director Christopher Columbus quit directing the movie Christmas Vacation because he couldn’t work with Chase. Instead of directing one of the most iconic Christmas movies of all time in Christmas Vacation he instead directed “Home Alone” which outgrossed Christmas vacation by over $400 million, garnered 2 Academy award nominations, and is widely considered one of the top few holiday movies of all time.
It doesn't matter how talented you were before, or how much people loved the films you created. It is always possible to destroy your own reputation to the point that people don't want to know you anymore. Reaping, sowing... it's like that.
Is it any surprise that the people he treated like shit don't want to work with him again? Chevy was really funny, but he's a complete asshole narcissist. I also think nobody loves Chevy Chase more than Chevy Chase.
It’s so lame Chevy chase is such a douche I really like his movies but also this isn’t like a few years of being a dick and being in a hard place it’s been decades of like no one having anything good to say at all levels
It's crazy he has the nerve to be hurt. Chevy is an asshole to be around by most accounts.
This story says it all. Rob plays it off, but I think it's a coping mechanism for being assaulted by someone whom he heavily looked up to as a career role model.
People like this don’t realize how important a reputation is! If you are a crappy person all the time you should expect that others don’t want to be around you, no matter who you were before.
The big thing I remember from reading Live From NY years ago is that every time he came back he was an asshole. And he was given many chances to stop being an asshole before they finally just banned him.
True story. I ran into him after the Snl 50 homecoming concert. I happened to be right by radio city music hall. I couldn’t resist the chance just to ask for a photo just because… it seemed like he ignored me, I figure he wasn’t interested or being rude but then his wife tapped him and said something like Chevy, this man would like a photo with you but after that I’d like to go. It was sweet the way she said it and he really just seemed lost and not together. I’m not defending if he really is a monster or bad man but after that moment I thought of when Marge draws Mr burns naked and says how she drew him that way to show even a monster of a old man is still a fragile human being.
Sad when folks go on their “12 step program of being a lifelong overall dick” tour. Could’ve been participating and going along with anything if most were not wanting the same you acted with.
Famously hard to work with man is shocked to learn people didn't invite him to come work a show with him.
Slo-burrrrn
Starburns?
His name is Alex
pop POP
:P (*blows raspberry)
Shut up Leonard. Those teenage girls you play ping-pong with are doing it ironically
Pfft, you just think you look cool in shorts. Thats what this outburst is about!
Don’t eat the crab dip!
Shut up Leonard. I know about your crooked wang
No such thing as bad press!
Shut up Leonard. I’ve seen a picture of your old nose; it was a lateral move!
Pop what!? Pop what?! What is he trying to say!?
Well, maybe you should spend five hours sculpting that in your face!
Pierce you're a b
This song is about me! I’m Pierce
He’s a gee Dee bee!
Stupid and ugly, he smell like a fart, then poo-poo in his pants and poo-poo in my heart
And, he did slap a co star on the show, which was what kind of did him in
He was actually banned from the lot, so they had to kill off his character because Paramount was just like, we are not dealing with this shit anymore get him the fuck off a lot
He would hide in other people‘s trailers, people who were not on the show he was on, to take a nap
That I didn’t hear. Who did he slap.
On a show he left because he was hard to work with to boot.
All that and he was only on there one bloody year.
That Bill Murray list was so funny. His delivery is still impeccable. Guy's still got it.
Chevy lost it about 35 years ago
Chevy was pretty good in Community but it's wild that he kind of wasn't acting, he played a curmudgeonly asshole and that'a basically how all his costars describe him on set.
They have said he would actively sabotage filming. If everything was running smoothly and ahead of schedule, he'd throw a tantrum.
He also took a run at a few cast members including Joel McHale who is 6'4".
Also made a D1 football team
The memory issues is the most likely reason. Chevy has been forthcoming about the problem. Maybe he just forgot he had memory problems.
Yo fuck Chevy’s feelings.
he just like me fr
Best comment here.
Well, don't be a fucking dickhead.
I think that’s a bridge too far for him.
Perhaps its a street too far ahead?
Impossible. Dude is streets ahead
Dude can't make it out of bed without being a wanker
If you have to ask you’re streets behind
Stop trying to make streets ahead happen
You hit the nail on the dick head.
Chevy chase is a perfect example of be attractive don’t be unattractive.
If you watch his older stuff when he was younger, he was always a dick. People thought he was cool and funny like a Daniel Tosh or a Joel McHale.
Once he got fat, old, and ugly. It became too far.
I disagree. if you watch a movie with a young Chevy Chase in it, I guarantee you that the IMDb will be like "and these are the directors or actors who quit working with him because of how he behaved on the movie or refused to do the movie at all based on his previous bad behavior."
Seriously. The most fragile people have no problem bullying others.
This was the correct comment.
I’d amend that. Don’t be a dickhead consistently as if it were a fulltime job
We all have our off days where we act like dicks. The diff between us and a guy like chase is we own it, fix it and move the fuck on.
Hard to change when you’ve been a dickhead since the 70s.
Who cares? Everyone he’s ever worked with is hurt that he’s such a douche asshole.
Love the idea of him seething in the audience after finding out last minute he wouldn't be on stage.
If I had to guess I'd assume it was originally a given that he'd be part of the show but nobody wanted to write him into their sketch or be on stage with him.
Isn't this par for the course at SNL, skits getting chopped last minute? He was on the first ever show, you'd think he'd remember.
I don’t know the particulars of SNL but it’s a common revenge tactic in this industry to lead someone on and keep them hanging until the last minute, then disappoint them.
“But I got away with it for so long!”
For, I would say, 50 years or so if my math is correct
Hasn’t it been known that he’s a dick for a while now? Like since the 2000s
Yeah somehow they made 4 vacations and that hotel he’ll vacation spin off. What is Beverly’s opinion of him?
And racist. Don’t also forget racist.
I can excuse racism but I draw the line at animal cruelty
In my opinion, the hypocrisy is the worst part.
I thought the worst part was the raping.
I even read this in Norm’s voice
But mostly what I’ll remember is the laughter
You can excuse racism?! 👀
BUT HE DRAWS THE LINE AT ANIMAL CRUELTY
Don't britta this thing. You are better than that.
Maybe he just hates black dogs
Right ?
Like how big of an asshole are you that even a goofball like Will Ferrel wants to beat your ass.
Is he surprised though? He's been an absolute monster to everyone he's ever worked with and people in public who have had the misfortune to encounter him.

Here is the whole story in case curious:

This literally reads like Community
Chevy hates all drummers after he lost out on being the drummer for Steely Dan. It’s his supervillain origin story. Maybe.
Im an old guy and hadn’t heard this until I read about how he was almost in Steely Dan a few years back and it blew my mind. Then I started thinking about what a snobby twat Donald Fagen has always been and the whole thing made sense.
Sounds plausible to me.

Recently saw this story, pretty interesting.

Just for clarity…
Chevy did not insult Bill’s wife… kind of the other way around.
Chevy came back to host and Bill had replaced Chevy in season 2
Chevy was already regretting leaving…and was resentful of Bill.
Chevy was mocking Murray about his acne scars a likened his face to the “surface of the moon”
Bill responded “why don’t you go home a fuck your wife, I hear she might need it” a reference to Chevy’s failing marriage…
They through some sloppy punches and as Belushi broke them up Bill called Chevy a “medium talent!”
Ivan Rihtman was backstage and heard the insult and thought it was such a creative and harsh put down, that he wanted to meet Bill.
It’s all in the Book: Live From New York
Live FROM NY was an interesting book. I should pull it out and reread it
Best part about Live from New York is the Rashomon-like differing recollections of the same events.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug.
“Medium talent” may still be my favourite burn ever. It is so subtle that it just wrecks.
It’s so great because it does acknowledge a sense of genuine humor and comedic chops in Chevy.
It’s just that he’ll never be able to elevate it beyond a sense of humor and a spark of comedic chops.
Low talent or a hack would be a compliment in comparison.
The most telling part about Chevy was that no one who knew him showed up for his second roast.
He just got lambasted by people like Colbert.
I knew I heard about something with Chevy and McHale, who seems to me to be a pretty chill guy.
Crazy that Chevy Chase would get into physical fight with Joel McHale. Joel McHale is a former tight end for the Washington Huskies football team when they were good and still in incredibly good shape. Chevy is also almost 30 years older.
Only time I saw the guy on an interview he was making fun of John Belushi’s nose making a weird noise because of cocaine addiction
The Dan Harmon voicemail was also batshit crazy.
Chevy should have reexamined his life when Belushi was the sane one
He slapped Cheri Oteri in the back of the head. Will Ferrell was outraged and spoke to Loren Michaels about it. He was never welcomed back.
Next time you want to have a little fun hitting women, expect to be “hurt” by your later exclusion from decent society.
Looking back, Cheri was pretty awesome on SNL
I thought she was awesome at the time but even the shittiest Victoria Jackson the cast ever produced doesn’t deserve to be surprise brained by a bombastic has-been.
That's some Brand New Sentence shit. Love it.
Tons of ppl shittier than Victoria Jackson. Jim Breuer springs to mind.
Is he that unaware of himself? His reputation? I understand being upset, who wouldn’t be regardless of the circumstances, but at the end of the article, he literally asks why he wasn’t invited? Dude, look in the mirror.
I'm sure he's a bit of a Narcissist to top it off...they're seldom self aware.
Exactly. You can explain it to them like they’re five and then they’ll nod and seem like they’re getting it and then follow up with “ok but why was I not invited tho?”
Well Chevy you were a dickface to everyone!
OG dickface huh?
You could probably be more creative with the insult but Chevy Chase does kind of suck.
That’s because you’re Chevy chase, and none of the others invited were.
Don’t be such an arrogant dick consistently for years next time 🤷♂️
See you at the 100 year reunion, Chevy!
Fuck off Chevy, no one’s buying it.
Wait why doesn’t Lorne have a good rep
People forgive Lorne for a lot.
He shouldn't have been such a asshole to everybody on the show
He did get a nice shoutout from Bill Murray during the show, iirc - and he was arguably the biggest asshole to him out of everyone during his time there.
That’s 100% billion Murray rubbing it in
That could be seen as an epic troll job too.
It 100% was.
They gave him a shoutout during Weekend Update that night crediting Chase as one of the best WU hosts of SNL history. He ought to be honored they even did that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Had he actually played a role in the sketch, I’m not sure people would have even cheered for him.

Dialogue that reflected the cast reaching their breaking point with him.
The way he was written off the show is hilarious and shows just how much he’d alienated everyone.
Such a jerkoff.....
... and here's your thermos of sperm.
He really seems surprised that people don't like him. Not a lot of self-awareness going on with Chevy.
There's no way he doesn't know he's a fucking asshole, right?
People are often the hero of their own stories. Im sure he just thinks he is funny but people cant take a joke
Is he flexible enough to give himself a rectal exam?
I tend to find arseholes of that level a very rarely self aware or even the slightest bit introspective in how they act and treat others
Christmas Vacation is absolutely considered a top holiday movie.
He’s acting like sketches don’t get cut all the time on SNL.
Maybe you should've behaved better there, chief.
Don't be a dick, people will invite you places.
Be the kind of person who people want to invite to stuff.
Can't he just go do his own late night show?
...ooh, right.
Who cares Fuck him
“I’m really hurt by the consequences of my actions”
“Actor who’s famously a dick to everyone hurt he wasn’t included in reunion. Because he’s a dick to everyone.”
It doesn't matter how talented you were before, or how much people loved the films you created. It is always possible to destroy your own reputation to the point that people don't want to know you anymore. Reaping, sowing... it's like that.
Have you tried not being an asshole to everyone you meet for 50 years?
Hes an asshole. Why would they include him?
Well, Chevy, don’t be a dick and you will be I voted to parties.
Boo hoo, don't be a dick then
It's cuz he was an asshole and all the rest hated him. Didn't Bill knock him out once?
Mother fucker was there for one season…
Gee, if you really weren’t a prick 🧐
He’s like the Pete Rose of SNL
Ya know...maybe dont be an asshole your whole life lol
Is it any surprise that the people he treated like shit don't want to work with him again? Chevy was really funny, but he's a complete asshole narcissist. I also think nobody loves Chevy Chase more than Chevy Chase.
It’s so lame Chevy chase is such a douche I really like his movies but also this isn’t like a few years of being a dick and being in a hard place it’s been decades of like no one having anything good to say at all levels
Colbert’s roast of him is my favorite roast of all time.
Maybe don’t be such an asshole?
Has he tried not being a giant piece of shit?
Well Chevy, that's what you get when you're an asshole for 50 years.
That’s what you get when you’re a piece of shit to everyone around you. Wah Wah fucking baby
Maybe don’t be a massive asshole no one wants to be around
Well well well, if it isn’t the consequences of my actions.
Sounds like he has a bit of a grudge. This is why I'll never hold a grudge. My father held grudges and I'll forever hate him for it.
Even Alucard knows Chevy Chase is an asshole.
He knew when it was.
He coulda reached out.
But I also agree. He should have been included unless other previous cast members refused to come if he was there
Maybe don’t be an insufferable bitch
I feel his pain, they didnt invite me either
After reading that article, it just screams of a wounded ego. Almost a “how dare you”.
He was funny, but it’s hard to laugh at someone once you know they’re an arrogant prick.
The doc is called "I'm Chevy Chase and you're not."
Well thank goodness for that.
Stop being a total dick
Maybe don’t be a fucking asshole fletch.
Met Chevy one time. Real dick…
Well if it isn’t the consequences of my own actions…
Maybe don't be an asshole then.
Who gives a fuck. He chose to be an unlikable asshole for his entire career fuck his feelings.
Let this be a lesson to the Younglings here: don't be an asshole like Chevy Chase
Is there such a thing as slow-burn karma? Maybe just for Chevy? A special kind.
He's streets behind
Has anyone ever had anything nice to say about working with him? Colored all of us shocked
Pierce, Pierce, Pierce! Pierce, you’re a B!
Chevy Chase seems like he’s a lot nicer than he used to be. Maybe that’s just old age, or he did some reflecting, who knows
It's crazy he has the nerve to be hurt. Chevy is an asshole to be around by most accounts.
This story says it all. Rob plays it off, but I think it's a coping mechanism for being assaulted by someone whom he heavily looked up to as a career role model.
https://people.com/tv/chevy-chase-slapped-rob-huebel-in-the-face-the-first-time-they-met/
Maybe if he wasn't such an insufferable prick for his entire life he'd have been included.
Chevy is an asshole. No surprise he wasn’t invited.
Remember, be nice to people on the way up because you might meet them again on the way down.
I know it hurts. But if you hurt others they are a lot less likely to aid you later.
Well, maybe if he wasn’t such an obnoxious, gigantic asshole, he would’ve been invited
Kinda racist and mean and hard to work with
I get it why it may have hurt his feelings. But while watching it, I didn’t even notice he wasn’t in it.
Proof that even an asshole can feel pain.
Then don’t have been a dick to everyone for 50 years?
He's an obnoxious prick and this is well known.
Awwww
He has feelings.
Fixed it for ya 😉
Interesting. Did he consider not being a total douchebag?
People like this don’t realize how important a reputation is! If you are a crappy person all the time you should expect that others don’t want to be around you, no matter who you were before.
My feeling is that he should have been included, then make him own up to being a dick… as well as part of the foundation.
Well you reap what you sow
Good. Medium talent
Dunno if this has been posted here yet: https://www.reddit.com/r/HobbyDrama/comments/xk73sy/comedy_how_to_piss_off_everyone_youve_ever_met_so/
Karma mon chere Chevy
Hey Chevy!
Your publicist should show you the comments posted in this thread.
An actor reads right?
Maybe?
Probably not as much as it did when he was rude and racist to a bunch of people over the decades.
Yeah, I bet it hurts to realize that so many people think you‘re an intolerable asshole.
Maybe those several years you spent acting better than the show and everyone else on it made them not want to include your ass.
Sad when folks go on their “12 step program of being a lifelong overall dick” tour. Could’ve been participating and going along with anything if most were not wanting the same you acted with.
Maybe stop being an asshole?
