“Coal power generation fell in China and India for the first time since the 1970s last year, in a “historic” moment that could bring a decline in global emissions, according to analysis.”
Not necessarily peaked, since coal is used not only for electricity generation, but also for heating industrial processes, like smelting iron ore to produce steel. But peak is imminent in any case
They said this would never happen. And solar and storage costs are still plummeting… wind is becoming super efficient and heat pumps and EV’s beat burning fossils by a country mile.
The real kicker, electricity use in China is rising fast while coal generation is down, more than half of all new car sales are EV’s, who says the grid can’t handle them? China just proved them wrong. AGAIN.
Coal demand in Europe has been steeply dropping for well over a decade.
U.S. coal consumption has been in a long-term structural decline for nearly two decades, with its share of electricity generation and overall energy consumption falling to historic lows. The only thing propping up coal in America at this point is Republicans - there's no other reason but MAGA for many coal-fired power plants there to stay open.
Renewables are soaring in Australia, and as a result domestic use of coal is rapidly in decline there, too.
Coal only accounts for 2.6% of Africa's energy mix, and it is steadily dropping thanks to the speed and cost effectiveness of deploying wind and solar.
South America is widely seen as a global leader in transitioning away from coal, with countries like Chile accelerating plans to close all coal plants ahead of schedule.
With coal demand dropping off in Asia, the conclusion is obvious:
The coal industry is ultimately cooked, and good riddance. The sooner it dies, the better.
I would bet that yes peak coal has been reached, if China and India have peaked as they are the major burners of coal
At the rate solar PV panel factories are pumping out PV panels, I just can't see any return of coal.
Of course under the brain dead Trump administration, they are trying to get Americans to pay more for electricity to get polluting coal. Go figure.

All while EVs are scaling up too ? How is that even possible? Electricity demand has been rising in China by about 7% for last couple of years. WOW!!
The media is going tell us it must because China is slowing down but the facts tell us something else…
