I am in a desperate need of a work pen. Every one I use breaks and isn't durable. I need one that can write in 2° weather, write on the back of gloves (and not smear), be thrown and stepped on. Ran over by a stretcher. Chewed by a dog.
Bonus points for a cute pen. I don't really want a tactical-type pen, but will go for it if it's my only option. I already carry a marker.
What are you writing with at work?
Sharpie S Gel pens!! Non smear no bleed will work on almost anything Or Write in the rain pens with write in the rain notepads Or Milwaukee INKZALL job site marker will literally write on bloody gloves
Man I get smear on s gel all the time, haven't noticed as much on paper but glove I gotta let it dry
I do too ... They don't write on golves without smearing
For writing on gloves and bags of saline or syringes I use sharpie marker.
On paper it's one of the metal sharpie s gel pens.
Really?!? I’ve never had my pens smear on anything but I’d definitely believe it’s possible
+1 for both Rite in the Rain and INKZALL.
I absolutely love my Rite in the Rain pens and pads, and the INKZALL is my go-to Sharpie replacement.
My marker is an INKZALL and truly the best option out there. I love it and will search high and low when I misplace it
I buy them by the case
Right and I feel like the rite in the rain notepads can withstand sitting in my pockets for a year much better then any other brand
Fine or ultra fine?
I lost my amazing work pen, I’m pretty sure it was this tho
Pilot G2 or sharpie
i buy the cheap BIC pens bc i lose mine all the time. but a good durable one might be the sharpie brand, everybody loves those
Same. All the trucks are stocked with my pens I keep losing.
People buy work pens? Mine come from the nurses desk when they're left all willy nilly without a home.
I got yelled at for doing that today but she then said I needed a spanking so it wasn’t too bad 🤭
So you’re the one taking my pens?!!!
Guilty
Whatever I end up stealing from the nurses station
Zebra 701
Ah, ole reliable. Throw in a space pen cartridge for best results
I didn't know it could take a space pen cartridge, I'll have to try that!
As a space pen user, I don’t find it writes as well on ecg paper as other pens. I still use it because it’s been my work pen for 4-5 years and therefore has earned the right to stay
Yup, it's actually a fairly common pen mod that goes back years and years. There's a plastic stopper in the F701 that needs to be widened a bit to accommodate the cartridge, but otherwise it's a perfect fit
Cheap and reliable
This. All you need
G2 pilot bold
Zebra.
Archival grade ink. Never smears.
I've used them in the Navy, and am still using them as a firefighter now.
What zebras are your favorite - I’ve tried them stolen a lot and liked them but never paid attention to model
I usually use the f301, it's the cheaper option.
There's a lot of good info on the other f models on r/pens
Apparently the ink quality went down a bit, but they still write the same.
In the navy, I used them for log keeping on watch. Sometimes stuff would get wet, or covered in chemicals. Now, I use it on my gloves mostly. They write well, and I'm able to keep all info on my hands during calls.
If I’m buying it, whatever’s cheapest and won’t tear through a glove if I write on it, bonus points if it drys fast. I like the 1mm Papermate ball points. Or the Sharpie pens. Bic Glide are good too.
Tbh though whatever I can “lateral transfer” from a desk at base or the nurse’s station works just as well lol. You lose way to many to be dropping big bucks on nice ass pens lol
What is it about those Papermate ball points, they're so good
I just bought a box of skillcraft government pens. Very reliable. Also they're made by blind people so you can feel better about it
Cheapest ones available.
Bic Clic Stick. Like $5 for a 10 pack at Dollar General.
Don't have to worry about losing a cap, will write on damn near everything and never smear. I usually carry two, one on each side in my thigh pockets.
I have a big box of 60.
Whenever I go to trade shows - don't care if it's EMS, a fire school, or an engineering conference, I load the heck up with as many of them as I can casually grab without looking too obvious. But they HAVE to be the Bic ones, not the generic knock-offs.
When I worked for a consulting engineering firm, I was trying to get them to have some printed with the company logo. I don't think they understood the value, because our techs would forget them EVERYWHERE. It'd be borderline guerilla marketing, at $1.97 a pop. Instead, they went with some uber-fancy pens that we were scared to take out of our desk drawers, let alone use in the field.
One for you and one for the colleague who "forgot" theirs (they don't own one).
I work on an ALS rig, so I'm always partnered with a medic. I've pretty well accepted that my job is glorified Uber driver, pizza and caffiene-fueled LUCAS device, and pack mule for everything the medic might have forgotten.
I'm comfortable with this role.
I have a Fischer space pen that I bought as a gift to myself. It's even engraved so that the person who steals it from me KNOWS who's it is.
That's risky 😯
I know. I was afraid to comment because I've held on to it for 2 years now and it would be my luck to lose it after this comment.
Uniball Signo
207307 hands downYess, preach the good word, my friend 🙌
Though I like the 307 👀
That may be what I meant in all honesty - I'm on holiday at the moment and can't check
I have a 207+ and a 307, but supposedly the 207+ is supposed to have the better ink, but they feel the same to me tbh
I will tell you what I tell every single driver I’ve ever had. “If you don’t have a pen, then we don’t have a pen.” 😜
Whatever I get for free from hotels and buying insurance. As long as it’s a click I’m happy.
Zebra 701
Left handers vote for the Pilot G-2, 24/7/365…
Pilot g2 Limited
+1, the metal just feels so good. Plus it being $10 or $20 makes it harder to lose or forget.
Sharpie S-gel metal barrel. Chef's kiss.
They do smear on "oily" or similar surfaces, such as gloves. I don't write on gloves, but if I have to write on something that I don't want to smear I just use a Zebra sharpie (also metal barrel).
All of these good suggestions and I'm over here with my $9.98 60-pack BIC from Amazon.
Fisher Space pens for me. Have been using the same 2 for nearing on 2 years now without issue. Will write in the wet, upside down, sideways, etc. Rite in the Rain sources their pens from Fisher as well.
Sharpie pen fine tip felt tip. They're black. I'm left-handed, so I know about smearage. They write on just about anything without bleeding.
I printed some Glock slide action pens that use a pilot G2 core. They big and hard for me to lose and I
My pen favs in order Bic Intensity clic gel pens 0.7 Pentel energelX 0.5 (X important) Uni jet stream standard ballpoint 0.5 in the white body
Edit: I'm a lefty and these do not smear on me
Staedtler Lumocolor fine (318) is my favorite glove pen - I went to a Block art supplies and glove-tested too many pens
https://www.staedtler.com/us/en/products/markers/universal-pens/lumocolor-permanent-pen-318-permanent-universal-pen-f-m318/
Parker Jotter or whatever I lift from the ED.
I’ve always used g2 in bold (1mm). The only way you’re going to get a pen that is more durable is to just buy something metal that can take the refill ink cartridge of your choice. I’ve been using a metal bolt action that’s brass and just put the g2 cartridge in. If you’re prone to leaving pens behind tho just buy use whatever is cheap.
Whatever is on sale at the drug store
I lose them constantly so I try not to get attached
S gel, rite in the rain, and g2 if I have nothing else
Pilot or Sharpie pens, but I also keep a mini sharpie with my Leatherman on my belt. Highly recommend. Better for writing on gloves and tape and such
Will the sharpie pens write on gloves?
Idk ive been using a mini sharpie for 11 years
Whatever the nurse left unattended on the counter
Are there no free Gift pens from Hospitals, Medical suppliers or other companys in your area? I have never written with a pen I bought myself. But it could also be a thing from Germany.
Yeah, I could definitely source a free pen. But I'd like one that isn't going to break, writes nicely and is durable
tactile turn bolt short brass
My favorites are OPPs.
Ontario Provincial Police?
Other People's Pens....
Pilot g2
I second pilot G2's
I use BIC Glide Bold pens. About 50 cents each. They’re good and reliable and I find it writes better and smoother because it’s got a 1.6mm ball compared to the standard 0.7mm ball. The pocket clip is also great and retains it well.
I prefer them over more expensive pens like the Pilot G2 because it doesn’t smear. I’ve found I like ballpoint much more than gel because I’ve had a lot of issues with gel pens refusing to write.
I’ve had a lot of people tell me it’s a good pen or that it writes really well. It’s also at a price point where if someone asks to borrow a pen, I just hand it to them and tell them to keep it which makes people pretty happy. I lose pens all the time and IDGAF. I buy a new box every year or so.
Bic BU3's aren't too expensive but I like the little bit thicker, triangular grip on them. Unfortunately I do seem to break a lot of them bumping into things and wish I could get some nice metal pens that aren't too expensive.
the free pens you get from car dealerships and hotels and stuff. I've been rocking one from some company called Dirks or Dunst or smth for YEARS now, I finally retired it bc it had more than earned its keep and I had become too attached to it. That mfer and I have been through some stuff together.
I use uniball jetstreams. People keep fucking stealing them, so I always have several packs at home.
Uniball Jetstream!
Whichever one my partner has
I just use whatever I steal from the nurses or admin
Bags of cheapo ball point pens from Target, so I can throw them out when they get contaminated/give ‘em to my coworkers/lose them and it’s no big deal.
Tru Red, can get them in black or blue, it’s just a brand name. Has been writing fine in the cold in Canada
My partners
The pens provided by my operation. They're free and easily replaced
whatever the hell i find in the front cab
I just use a click/push-button Sharpie extra-fine marker. They've never smeared for me, and they seem to write on anything
I buy Skilcraft aviator pens.
Classic zebra pen
Whatever I find laying around the station
I’m so curious about what you’re doing with this pen. I precept a lot of people. And I have proctored NREMT exams and seen the tape on thighs with OPQRST and SAMPLE written on them. Like what’s the pen for? What are you doing with it? How does it help the patient?
Well, writing. We take paperwork. Room assignments. To write med doses. Vent settings. Patient/family phone numbers.
It doesn't help the patient? It helps me. Makes my job easier.
We also take a glucose from IVs and use the pen tip to push blood out lol
Med command name/number. Pt demographics from family. Sometimes the emergency contact phone #. Ohhhh or cell phone passcode
Oh goodness it’s been like 5 years since I’ve had an IV catheter that didn’t have a safety plastic cap on the back. It was handy to grab a BG off of it, when I had those. But now, na I can’t. I guess my main thought was, I haven’t needed a pen in years. We have gone all digital on signatures. BG is like the last thing that doesn’t transfer over with the monitor. I guess the question is, what are we using the pen for?
No disrespect, but I find it incredibly odd you have no use for a pen lol
Even on cardiac arrests I'm writing times. I don't think it's that unusual. Sure, we have digital options but sometimes that's not the easiest way
🤷🏼♂️
Why would I write times on a cardiac arrest? I need to get IV/IO access. I need an airway. I need to make sure compressions are happening in a beneficial manner. I need to give epi, and amio, or just epi epi epi. I need to know 3 to 5 minutes. I don’t need to write any of that down.
I ain't doing that stuff! My EMT and first responders are. My EMT can do all those things, why would I? (Besides a tube).
I need the times all those things are done for my chart. I use a 2-min timer on my watch for rhythm check and med administration.
Ya I mean charting is charting. Patient care is patient care. Like I do an ePCR and a nifers report for every call I run. And not even exaggerating I’m probably plus 18,000 reports at this point. I have never cared about a pen. But that’s being poo poo on someone else’s style. Like I’m yucky your yumm. I don’t get it. But if it works for you it works for you
Hey sorry I’m being a jerk and sorry
No worries man. Happy holidays!
You know what. I’m going to admit that I’m wrong and I was looking at it from my personal point of view. I respond to calls and take people to hospitals. I legit haven’t had a pen in years. Don’t need one. IV catheters have a safety on the back now that make it more difficult to get a BG then just doing a lancet. But that’s on me and I’m in the wrong.
You are keeping your pens too long after a couple of shifts or a nasty patient straight to the trash. Bic click pens
Pilot G2 hasn’t failed me in my 6 years of service. That said the sharpie pens are fairly decent too. Any felt-tip marker will write on gloves too, sharpies are great for writing on skin as well.
Found a full box of dept pens in a old command trailer a few years ago. Still working my way through that lol
Pilot G2, comes in any color you want. I like hot pink
Yasssaa this is what I wanted to hear
Zabra F-701. Not cute but I've had more of those run out of ink and get lost in an act of self defense than that pen give up on me.
I'll probably get roasted for this but when I worked ground I had a lamy 2000 and an olight glow pen. For flight I just carry the glow pen
Pilot G2 for pens. I carry two, one for me and one to lose or borrow.
I also carry a fine point sharpie. That's what I use to write on gloves or anything like mixed drug bags. Works well enough.
Ultra Fine Tip Sharpie Marker is perfect for writing on gloves
whatever people leave around and I pick up along the way
“Industrial” sharpies don’t smear.
Pilot G2 all day. I like the Sharpie S gel, but find that they frequently came apart in my pocket.
Pentel Mini R.S.V.P. Ballpoint Pen, Medium line. We got ours on Amazon, comes in a few colours and fits on a key ring so it lives with our badges. Ink works on everything and we haven't had any problems with them.
https://a.co/d/7FLSegt
Side note for my dry erase marker and sharpie I drilled a hole in the plastic on the cap between the functional part of the cap and the side peice of plastic that you can use to prevent it from falling all the way down your pocket and put them on the same key ring so there are less things to loose
I worked per diem for a transport company and they were big on advertising so they always had pens with the company name on them and encouraged us to give them out, as well as small note pads with their logo on it. The NH nurses loved us lol. Around this time of year we’d give out a desktop sized yearly calendar. I didn’t mind doing it bc it meant I never had to wait for the paperwork or be treated bad. Not that I would’ve took any BS lol but I digress. I never needed to buy a pen bc the pens they had worked great.
I do not "buy pens"
I am a professional. A practice placement educator. I take stationary from my students. If I'm alone on a car, I will call for backup - not to convey the patient, but to take stationary from their student. It's called education
Teal sharpie mostly
Twisbi Exo for paperwork
A pen from u brand, just a ball point. Nothing special honestly but I like how it feels in the hand and that it's metal. I've also had it for like...7 months now so I'm kinda attached to it honestly. Having it for 7 months is more or less why I like it. I've never had one this long, it's like a bond has grown between us. I dream about this pen on occasion, how we hold back the tides of angry nurses and patients alike by scribbling away notes on our Lil scratch pad, Igor. I love this pen, I'd FUCK this pen.
Fischer space bulletin pen. Raw brass for a little anti microbial action, they’re well sealed so won’t leak in the washer on the uniform and I have an ID badge holder that holds my pen and some extra info cards so it doesn’t get lost and won’t go through the wash anyway
If you're not using a Pilot G-2 (my preference is 0.7) you should probably evaluate your life.
I have been a G2 fan in the past but they smear. I'm a 1.0 gal
The 1.0 is a little too thicc for my (pen) taste. I find the 0.7 doesn't really smear though
I’ve used, at one point or another, all of the pens listed here. A lot of solid choices.
My favorite has become the Rite in the Rain pen. It’s similar to a Fisher Space Pen but the ink somehow just works better especially on gloves and ekg paper. And the pen itself is really durable and solid without looking tactical. Available in several different color options too!
I also got in the habit of always carrying a sharpie and a cheap “loaner” pen I could lend without worrying about my more expensive pen.
Whatever I can acquire from a conference. Back when JEMS was a big conference, I walked away one year with something on the order of 30 pens from ZOLL alone, and about 6 overall.
I just accept that I am going to lose pens, and carry at least 2 on my person, and a few more in the little bag I bring on the truck with me.
I'm not terribly particular about them, other than needing retractable as opposed to capped.
Pilot G2
Pilot G2 or bust. My favorite pen ever for anything
I usually have a funeral home pen. We're all dark on the inside
Zebra was my go to. Not sure how they are now
And im fussy about my writing utensils.
Whatever these are called
Sharpie S Gel pens.... but with the metal barrel. I'll never use one of the plastic ones again. In fact, I buy the four-packs of the plastic ones to use as refills (plus one as a throw down pen).
What ever I steal from nurses lol
For a long time it was a Fisher Space Pen, but lately I’ve been into the Rite in the Rain ones since they’re cheaper but seem to work as well. I have a couple of the click top ones, and also a few of the bullet style pocket ones, both made of metal and made of plastic. The plastic ones are probably the best bang for the buck. All of mine are hunter orange both for easy spotting if I drop them and because it’s easier to tell if someone grabs mine.
In my experience you tend to use whatever you steal from registration :(
Sharpie. Yup, just a regular sharpie
Do what I did, tactically acquire them from nurses stations
