What is this?
Previous renters had spilled something on the wall. I cleaned up the streaks with some vineagar and then used mold treater just in case and brushed it.
As its drying i notice this brown spot and also scraped enough to expose mesh tape.
Worried it may be mold? I did use mold cleaner though so not sure how it would grow against it.
Anything helps.

If that is a furnace vent below, maybe it causes condensation on the window when indoor warm air hits a cold window.

Couple possibilities ..... One, the window above that register is leaking which is my guess from the multiple stain areas . Another , but less likely... Is the window gets frost on the inside in the winter , and the register melts it and it runs down the wall...... But I'm 98% putting my money on a leaking window , specifically the one directly above the stain

Its proably hot meeting cold since thats a window. Hot + cold = condensation. Condensation means water. Are the walls insulated?

You have water damage in that wall. ( behind ) . Check in basement to see if you have pipes behind your vent. If so, it's from the pipes. If not, you have water in from someplace . Good luck
🎈Straight line on all sides, cut out whole area plus some more on each side - check for leaks and dry-rott damaged Wood - cut out all affected and replace.
-Fix leak, insulate properly, New Wall board, shims, tape, Mudd , sand, repeat and then primer. Be safe/ wear mask keep dust down.
There's a window leaking above that. The drywall is permanently stained. Kilz may help but I'm doubtful.
Zinser BIN shellac works much better and will block the stain permanently. If the window continues to leak the primer and paint will still fail.
Yes. Kilz is water based. Water stains are too. They'll rise to the surface through the water before it dries. Bin has almost no water and dries before it can travel through
