This is an attic over a bedroom that was just cleaned out because of a rodent infection. There was a leak in a separate part of the attic years ago but that has all been replaced and repaired. We have has a lot of hard rain this week but no leaking has started. I'm wondering if this could be somehow from mice? They've possibly been up there for years.

It looks bad to me snd It's a family friend's home. If we just blow in new insulation, and there's no leak, could this be a problem?

  • When I zoom in on it, it looks moldy. I'd replace.

  • Roof leak, you can see dis coloration where truss is

  • Are you asking about the stains on the drywall ceiling? It looks more like water damage to me. In my experience, the stains from rat or mouse urine is dark brown, so I doubt that it is associated with rodents. I don’t see any water stains on the underside of the sheathing, so unfortunately, I can’t make any suggestions.

  • Have roofer inspect roof. Wear masks, replace.

  • What did the insulation look like. Rodents would have burro holes and when you removed the insulation it would have been completely full of droppings to have a puddle that big. Would have to of been a group of at least 30 roof rats to make a urinal that big. Tiney mice no way. It’s almost for sure and old roof leak. No droppings, no rodents!!

  • Enlever cette plaque avec qu'il tombe sur quelqu'un

Yes - it appears to be bowed at the water stains in the first picture. I’d definitely cut that section out and replace it. At the very least, I’d put some blocking at either side of the joint, about 1/2 way between the joint and the edge of the water damage - maybe another at the joint - and screw into it to try to flatten that bow. It’s gotta be bulging into the room!

Second picture you can see water damage to the roof decking at the truss, so I don’t think this is from rodents. It also doesn’t look moldy - just water and dust…

This is it. You’ll need more blocking and devise a way to brace the sheetrock up higher before screwing it to the new blocking. Install the blocking flat against the rock, so you have a wide area to screw into.

Pocket screws or toe-nailing will work to secure your blocking. Pocket screws will give you more control. Take care if toe nailing to not drive the blocking into the drywall - it can pop it off its fasteners and make matters worse…

  • Is pulling the ceiling down, add a vapor barrier, add strapping, add insulation (rockwool), and reinstalling the ceiling out of the question. Other than discoloration, the span looks too wide for drywall with the weight of the insulation on top of it.

  • It looks like the drywall is about to fall down. I ca see the white edge of drywall where the fasteners are at. The sag looks terrible.

  • Looks like mold/mildew, you can spray with a mold killer bleach, and it will probably clear it up. I’ve actually used 30second outdoor cleaner on things like this with mold and it cleared it up pretty fast, put a fan on it as well, you can scrape a little to see how deep it went too,
