Painting this textured ceiling, there was some flaking paint we had to scrape off. Not pictured, but I applied some 5 minute joint compound to the scraped areas and followed it with a sponge trying to match the swirl pattern. It’s close, but it is not as pronounced as the surrounding texture. Any tips on tools/technique to make it blend seamlessly? Thanks for any insight.

  • Roll mud on with a paint roller, use a small broom or brush

  • Probably similar to a brush finish to concrete. A stiff bristle brush or broom might simulate the pattern, just guessing.

  • For starters dont use hot mud. Go get actual mud.

Then use a roller to apply the mud where you need it. Use a brush (you can find them in the drywall section at lowes) or tbh this looks like you could probably use a broom lol.

If youre not happy with the look, scrape it, do it again.

Thanks, broom would save me time on the ladder for sure. Why not use hot mud? Is it the faster cure time?

Between mixing, rolling, and texturing, youre on a tight time frame. Even if it is just a patch, you want it to be workable for more time. Especially if you dont like how it turns out the first time.

And if you get brush from lowes or something, they have a hole to screw a roller pole or broom handle to if you want to go that route

    Makes sense, thanks

  • Thank you for the replies, I will use mud and a masonry brush that seems promising.
