My son slams his door a bit and it's started sticking slightly. Just wanted to check if we need to be concerned about this crack above the doorframe that seems pretty big.
Nothing to be concerned about. Drywallers essentially T’d where the door framing is at instead of putting a solid piece of drywall and cutting out the door opening. Just leave it alone since it might come back if you patch it. Don’t bother with it unless you want to sell the property.
Usually this is no cause for concern, we specifically avoid landing joints above doors or windows for this reason. However, the fact that the door started sticking all the sudden, coupled with the fact that the crack is notably wider at the bottom than the top, means something shifted in the framing. Usually cracks like this are faint and uniform in width from top to bottom.
Its almost certainly not an emergency or something that needs an instant fix. You can probably shim the hinges or plane the door a bit to make it close correctly. But there's a bit more happening here than just "they put a joint above the door so it cracked."
My stepson used to slam his door. So I grabbed my Makita after an episode and took it off the hinges. What are you doing he said. Well there must be something wrong with your door so I’m gonna have to fix it. He flipped out I went and had a few beers and when I came back he agreed to never slam the door again if I’d just put it back.
Thanks all, been around the flat just now and seems to be a similar story around most of the doorframes. Just the crack above my son's door is more noticeable. I suppose the slamming doesn't help
Most likely a trust uplift and if so nothing to worry about. Fixing it especially during winter won’t work. It’s when they step crack at a 45 degree angle that you need to be more concerned and possibly investigate the cause.
That is my opinion, as well. I have cracks like that all over. If OP has a lot of money, they could hire a company like RamJack here in Portland, OR to reinforce the foundation. Otherwise, my house doesn't even call for crack repairs...
Cracking paint wouldn't cause the door to start sticking. Also, latex paint on drywall doesn't just crack by itself. Something underneath it is the issue.

Fill with nice stretchy paintable caulk. Drywaller got lazy with placement. Door might be sticking from weather changes.

There's a similar crack on the inside of the room, in the same spot, too

If it's a crawlspace you might as well get under that room and double check the state of things for good measure.
It’s common because the joints in the drywall land at a jamb of a door or window.

King and jack stud break are a no no to land a seam on.
Drywaller fucked you by landing seam on doorframe.
So should be a simple fix to patch up and nothing more sinister to worry about?
It will just crack again
Yes. You should hope your mother sees how messy your room is. Now go clean your room.
Just paint that's cracking. Perfectly normal.

He slammed the door. Nothing out of the ordinary here.
Slamming the door should not do this.
