From time to time I draw portraits and I’ve been considering doing art commissions, the problem is I don’t know where to start. Below is one of my drawings.
Any advice on where to start will be highly appreciated.
Trying to draw faces every day from reference, but I wanted to do like 5-10 a day of relatively small drawings that take about 20 mins roughly to draw. the problem is that I tend to draw things automatically to scale with the reference and so a small drawing becomes half an A4 and takes about 40mins to an hour...How do you train yourself to be able to scale down references? Because I am mainly focusing on quantity more than detail right now so that I can absorb facial shape etc. btw I dont use guide lines for the face except for the eyes at tricky perspectives, otherwise I just free draw.
It's been months since I have picked up a pencil or marker to draw. Deep down, I have no willingness to draw when things happen in your life, like a loss or something that just breaks you. How do you pick up and start to draw again?
Well, I came here to ask a question but my ego is dead cause you are just too freaking good. The question was related to live figure drawing which my brain is still hurting very much when I try to draw humans in person. Any great online courses that I can take or books I should read on improving proportionality there’s just too many online. I don’t know if anybody had any luck watching or reading something and getting that Aha moment.

I don’t know if this is the best place for this. But I’m feeling melodramatic and I don’t know where to put this.
Back when I was in high school, I started a Instagram page where I uploaded my art. I continued it when I got into college but stopped posting for a long time when I dropped out around 2021. It was just burn out and I had to get a real job now that I basically killed my professional part career before it even began (I was trying to be an animation major). I have been drawing ever since though and like crazy as of late. I may not be at the level of skill as an illustration major, but I feel it’s pretty good. But for the longest time, I’ve been keeping up with current events and the whole ‘AI thing’ has me proper spooked.
(TLDR) Is it even a good idea to keep posting? Are there even places where I can upload and my stuff wouldn’t be used to train that stuff or however it works? I’m aware that Instagram may not be the best place to post anymore for this reason. Also, my job keeps me plenty busy and I’m always tired when I get off. Can I even post and be successful on an infrequent basis?
Love to hear some feed back, but I may copy this whole diatribe and post it somewhere else so you may see this as a post somewhere else. (Or not, my questions have the tendency to not garner any attention on this stupid app)
Hi! I have not using color pencils after a while and I forgot a lot of how used it. I need advice if you have any suggestions I will really appreciate it 💜
This is my first posting. I have been drawing since I was in third grade. It's all self taught. And every time I draw I learn something new. Here is some of my work. Hope I am doing this right. New to Reddit. Enjoy
So this is kind of related, but im looking to upgrade my desk so that i can finally get back to drawing but also have room for my pc and 5 monitors (2 are drawing monitors) im looking for good advice of big desks for this purpose, thanks.
Actually, I already know the basics (I don't know if that's right or wrong). I still find it difficult and take a much time for various anatomy:"3. Any suggestions on how to learn/what keywords to use for me?
I want to improve, and I want to be able to do it without having to look at references often :"(. 1.What is wrong and what should I fix? 2. What do I need to learn more about, and how can I learn it so I understand and effective? (I'm slow at understand things :"D)
Mostly, just want to say hi. Been back and forth on drawing before. For the first time in decades want to take a risk, share (nowadays that meaning uploading on the internet), look for some feedback.
Found a couple small spaces already. Hoping I might also join this one.
I have so many ideas boiling in my brain, I want to try and express them. I've always had creative thoughts, but never been able to translate to a page
What are some decent starting materials? Should I start on regular paper, or the thicker drawing paper?
I really want to get something that will let me draw with a pen on my laptop, like with an app. What are some beginner recommendations for that?
Hello. Consider two things. Line weight and symmetry.
Imagine that in nature there is no outlines. You can try this via drawing lines that are underside of the form thicker, like combine the outline and shadow, the form casts. Greatest most influental example of artist utilizing this in my opinion is Jack Kirby.
Second point is using geometric shapes, squares, triangles and circles to help create symmetry. Take the paper, flip it around, press it against the window and draw over it with clear circles and squares.
Symmetry please. Try get the bulk of the action in center. For example use mirroring tool to mirror the upper body and head of the fox and place them on dead center.
I want to do drawings in manga/anime style and I watched some videos to learn the basics. I will start by doing basic shapes like triangle/circle/square and making them right.
Are there any advice or videos on YouTube anyone can recommend for beginners? I would appreciate it
Mostly graphite portrait. I'm at the point where I want to add more charcoal for darker values, Every time I reach this point it gets blotchy and spotty. Does anyone have any tips?
I want to turn my S9+ tablet, into a drawing stylus, for my laptop computer
So something similar to my Intuous Tablet I used in college.
Basically region lock my tablet so where I drag the stylus on it, gets reproduced on the monitor screen.
Are there any apps that can help do that?
Using my tablet as my main CSP drawing app is fine, but its kind of constrained and forces me to hunch myself a lot to use it comfortably. Really I'm looking for a solution that would let me look up at my larger monitor (kinder on my eyes / neck) and just match the motions my hands are doing with the stylus on the tablet.
I just started sketching as a form of therapy for my anxiety. I've never tried sketching before and this is my third piece so far. What are some things I can do to soften the transition lines between shadows and textures?
We’ve been giving critique to beginner artists – here’s one of my favorites. Feel free to submit yours here if you want thoughts. No cost, just love helping each other.
I haven’t sketched in a long time, but i want to get back into it, i want to improve my art, and one thing i want to do is draw my boyfriends Destiny 2 character. i’ve never done anything like that before, though. any tips on how to go about doing this?
These are actually amazing! I’d suggest you watch a bunch of tutorials and research different techniques on “how to draw the head/face” so that you can have a vast variety of ways to draw and can either use them or maybe come up with your own way☺️
Also- draw from different angles. Even if it’s hard and you don’t want to😂
Im new to drawing and want to ask. Is there a difference between tracing and looking at something and then drawing it? Like looking at an image of a cartoon and drawing it.
İn this photo shadows hiding some parts so without additional reference or knowing it will be hard to complate. Before this piece try to work on Clear referances, maybe same model with multiple angles
Hi guys, could you please tell me which app do you use to animate your sketches and if it’s free for everyone, because I can’t find a good way to do it🙃
would it be okay to use ai to get a rough image of my character model then commission artists to get actual drawings and such for making a vtuber model?
What are people's favorite non-gel pens? I was drawing with a brass space pen and it was really fun but kinda uncomfortable for extended periods, I'm looking for a smooth pen that is nice and comfortable in hand.
I would like advice for my future. I like art, painting, drawing... but I don't know what career to do in this voice... I installed reddit so that you can help me find the job that suits me.
Have a nice day, thanks in advance!
Im really struggling how to draw or even learn how to draw as a traditional artist. I watch many tutorials and read pdf books. Although my drawing has gotten better, its no where near my goal (im not sure if i even have one) i think i learn better if a find a class i can communicate in but dont know how to find any. Sometimes i dont know why i even draw. I have urges to draw but i wouldn't say its fun. Its more frustrating than fun lol pls help
i recently started using adobe fresco (over procreate) and i am floored with how much i like it! anyone have any tips and/or recs for AF or share this opinion?
I'm looking for someone to draw some characters for me, they're for a pokemon fan game I'm making, I'm not good at drawing, that's why I'm asking, if I had money I would pay you, it will be about 8-12 people you will be drawing,I don't care how long you take, I just need some one to them, It would be cool if the drawings were digital, DM me if you can take on the task, thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😭😭😭
Draw whatever you want. AI, magazines, anime(I hate anime), cartoons, comics. What you want to draw is nobody's business but yours unless you're commissioned.
What is your best advice for improvement besides "practice everyday"? Ive been drawing for a while. Had my first official art class in 5th grade and loved it ever since. Ive improved a ton since then but I feel ive hit a plateau. I practice over an hour a day usually in all different styles but I dont think im improving anymore. And I dont feel like I have an sort of personal style. I dont want to give up but im also not proud of the work I do and want to be better
Step outside your comfort zone. Draw things you don't think you can or draw things you normally wouldn't. Draw a crazy shape and make a drawing that has to fit into that shape. Draw things that don't even make sense. I had the same thought a few years ago. I drew myself drawing myself drawing myself. Had someone take a pic of the view above me. Took ages and loved it. Lost it in a bad break up. But I'd never have had that had someone not told me the same thing. Best of luck
Hello, I am a Mexican writer looking for a comic book artist to join Darkhorse Comics. My dream is to work as a writer. We can split the payment or profits 50/50. I have a proposal for a mini-series. If you are interested, please send a message.
Hi, I'm new to drawing in fact, I really suck at drawing and it is my number one weakness. Architectural drawing interests me and I decided that I want to draw smth like that (buildings, interiors, etc) but the problem is I don't know where to start + I have 0 talent (not exaggerating). Any tips to start drawing whether architectural or general wise would help me a lot, thank you!!
I dont know if this is the right sub or not... but I want to start drawing with felt pens for a bit of attention span rehab and to help with my overall mental health. I'd like to draw with some pastel-coloured brightly-coloured felt pens and then add some thin black outlines. Nothing fancy, just something simple.
I don't have a gajillion dollars to spend on researching pens, and don't want to do what I always do which is spend 6 months researching pens and then burnout without starting anything...
So, what do people typically recommend as the best felt pens that aren't going to break the bank (although don't necessarily need to be budget)? I'm looking for the best price:quality ratio. For the black fine-liner, I will probably just use a thin sharpie, unless anyone has any top recommendations.
I’m painting this bro with watercolour and I can’t seem to decide if I should outline him with white ink to make him stand out or not. Will it look too gimmicky or like a print? I did try making the background lighter than his hair but idk.
I started drawing and searched for references, but somehow I couldn't find any poses or pictures, that machen what I wanted to draw. Where can I find references or what I need and how I need to search? (Unfortunately, I don't have option to ask someone to take picture.)
My daughter really wants a drawing pad that connects to her pc. She's 14 and insanely artistic. I've looked at so many brands and so many types that I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. I liked the idea of the Huion note, but the reviews for it are not so great. Currently, her art style is cartoonist, but she also likes to draw animals. I'm not sure if that makes much of a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Wacom offers many good products. You must however decide if you want only drawing pad or pad with screen.
It is usually a preference thing.
Beyond that it's pretty much about additional features, you can mostly live without. Like additional buttons and tilt sencors or multi touch. (Latter being mighty handy)
Don't however buy cheap non professional brand, since they lack in accuracy and can ruin fun from drawing altogether.
I've had cheap equipment and software along my art journey that had some limitations, which pushed me to be more creative. She's a kid, she's still learning, whatever you get her won't last forever anyway. I wouldn't worry about the product as much as encouraging her to practice. Maybe give her a price limit and let her pick it out, that could give her more of a sense of ownership and responsibility for it.
Hey, I am writing a book and looking for someone to draw a book cover for me, digitally or hand drawn is great. I'd prefer digital because it is a book cover. Anyways, let me know if you think you could do it. I'll of course give you credit if my editor+ likes the cover.
any advice on how i can find my own art style? my goal is not to be a realistic artist in particular. I'd love to draw my own characters, but i can't find my own style. thanks!
not sure if this is the place for this but can someone please help me!!? i am a beginner in my teens and am having a hard time figuring out what is wrong with this and where to go from here. taking any advice feel free to screenshot and adjust to how you would fix it!
I'm assuming you are trying to draw in a semi realistic stylized look, and aside from the missing ears and foggy line work, Its fine. From what I can see there is nothing inherently wrong with it, So I'll nitpick. The nose is slightly crooked, the lower half of the face feels undefined with messy lines, and... Idk other than that its fine. If you could give some insight to what you want out of the drawing that would clear things up.
Hi! I'm trying to learn digital. This drawing is the first ever thing I've created digitally. Do u have any tips, comments, feedback, criticism, anything?
This is cool, good for a first try. You need to work on shading. Find some tutorials and follow them exactly through the whole way, after a few, you'll get to understand the tools and processes more.
I don't have any YouTube art tutorial suggestions. Look for yourself and just keep at it, you'll find some you like for whatever program you're on. Figure out what artists like, see if there's tutorials on their work, try to copy their work, and try to listen to any interviews they've done.
I took art classes in school through college, it's been a lifelong hobby for me. For every hour of art class I took, I matched at least 10 hours of personal study.
For advertising courses, I first taught myself Inkscape and gimp, then took some proper photoshop classes. I now have tools on multiple programs that I go to for different reasons.
New artists need to focus on practice and study.
Hi! i used the free trial of Clip Studio Paint, mainly for its 3D feature, but now i can't use it anymore... Any app that has the same feature, working the same way? thxxx
Gonna have to insist that anyone posting drawings and art, do so with a video accompaniment, showing them creating from start to finish. Pretty sure I could put up a bunch of AI generated shite these days 🙄
Pretty please, prove me wrong 😶
As a hobby sketcher, I would love to have a (hobby)writer write a short story, poem or oneliner for one of my drawings. And it would be fun to draw something for someone else's story (real, not some prompt). Anyone has the same wish? Anyone know of any platforms where this can be done?
Drawing is therapeutic for me, but I only draw occasionally when I am in the mood.
When I draw, I want someone to understand me via my drawings, but at the same time I feel like I am not good enough for anyone to see my drawings, and then I don’t feel like want to draw anymore, and it just becomes a loop.
I have a question. Is it possible to learn how to draw without practicing bunch of things? I really want to draw good, but the learning and practicing process is what kills the interest in me :(
Then draw something you would like to draw and isn't too far above your skill. If it keeps your intrest going then good. If you start to struggle then ask youself why and practice that. Go back and forth between practicing and drawing what you would like to.
Practice makes you faster and let you see whats wrong with your drawings. That is the purpose of practice.
Hey, so I'm currently working as an illustrator & want to get more into animation & vis dev, so I want to improve my figure drawing, perspective, etc. However, there's no good art course near my place and the online ones don't have feedback, any tips on how to improve well and fast?
My drawing is decent-okayish. I want to be really good at figure drawing and landscapes

I have a question for people: where do you find references now that Pinterest is full of AI? I'm getting pretty desperate.
Videos are great. If you have screen recording function in your phone, use it.
You can then stop the video where you want.
Protip. Seek sports events and dancers, since they are often displayed full body and are in natural motion.

Odd Question, so sorry if its phrased wierd:

Really I'm looking for a solution that would let me look up at my larger monitor (kinder on my eyes / neck) and just match the motions my hands are doing with the stylus on the tablet.
Thanks much for any help!

Hey! I’ve started to learn how to draw portraits. Any tips? I can’t seem to get my sketches to look like the pictures at all! :(

Tried to draw Viktor from Arcane😅 Still figuring out how this whole “drawing” thing works, despite being 4 completed sketchbooks in.🖤
Im new to drawing and want to ask. Is there a difference between tracing and looking at something and then drawing it? Like looking at an image of a cartoon and drawing it.
If you put the paper on top of the drawing and draw what you see under- it’s tracing (since you trace the lines you see).
If you’re looking at the original on your phone, let’s say, and you try to draw what you see on a clean sheet of paper- copying/using reference.
Ah. Thank you.

How can I draw this?
Kinda having trouble with the body the most, I’m trying to practice perspective anatomy
You can try outline the head with usinc circles and get the center line in place.
Human skull is always more or less same shaped, (some exeptions excluded) so you can fast find mouth, nose, jawline, eye sockets and cheek bones.
Try hit proportions right on them.
After that you can add shadow and start working on finer features.
But don't jump on details without framework.
İn this photo shadows hiding some parts so without additional reference or knowing it will be hard to complate. Before this piece try to work on Clear referances, maybe same model with multiple angles

Hi everyone, I would like your opinions.
Hello, I am new here and would really like to share my artwork but I don’t know how to get enough karma to post :/
would it be okay to use ai to get a rough image of my character model then commission artists to get actual drawings and such for making a vtuber model?
What are people's favorite non-gel pens? I was drawing with a brass space pen and it was really fun but kinda uncomfortable for extended periods, I'm looking for a smooth pen that is nice and comfortable in hand.
I would like advice for my future. I like art, painting, drawing... but I don't know what career to do in this voice... I installed reddit so that you can help me find the job that suits me. Have a nice day, thanks in advance!
How can I post here? I don't understand this karma thing
Do you think pixel art is very underrated nowadays?
Im really struggling how to draw or even learn how to draw as a traditional artist. I watch many tutorials and read pdf books. Although my drawing has gotten better, its no where near my goal (im not sure if i even have one) i think i learn better if a find a class i can communicate in but dont know how to find any. Sometimes i dont know why i even draw. I have urges to draw but i wouldn't say its fun. Its more frustrating than fun lol pls help

Hello, is it a good idea to draw what the AI generates for me?

Use yourself as a reference...that's what I do. You can put yourself in whatever pose you need
I'll of course give you credit if my editor+ likes the cover.

not sure if this is the place for this but can someone please help me!!? i am a beginner in my teens and am having a hard time figuring out what is wrong with this and where to go from here. taking any advice feel free to screenshot and adjust to how you would fix it!

Thank you so much! It's actually really helpful. Do you recommend perhaps someone's tutorials on YouTube?
I made this drawing the other day, I would like some opinions, please.

Gonna have to insist that anyone posting drawings and art, do so with a video accompaniment, showing them creating from start to finish. Pretty sure I could put up a bunch of AI generated shite these days 🙄 Pretty please, prove me wrong 😶
How do you “know” if a lot of this stuff isn’t just nerdboys rocking AI???

hi
As a hobby sketcher, I would love to have a (hobby)writer write a short story, poem or oneliner for one of my drawings. And it would be fun to draw something for someone else's story (real, not some prompt). Anyone has the same wish? Anyone know of any platforms where this can be done?
Drawing is therapeutic for me, but I only draw occasionally when I am in the mood.
When I draw, I want someone to understand me via my drawings, but at the same time I feel like I am not good enough for anyone to see my drawings, and then I don’t feel like want to draw anymore, and it just becomes a loop.
Does anyone feels this way too?

I'm working on my shading and still practicing fundemetal forms. What do you guys say?
I have a question. Is it possible to learn how to draw without practicing bunch of things? I really want to draw good, but the learning and practicing process is what kills the interest in me :(
Then draw something you would like to draw and isn't too far above your skill. If it keeps your intrest going then good. If you start to struggle then ask youself why and practice that. Go back and forth between practicing and drawing what you would like to.
Practice makes you faster and let you see whats wrong with your drawings. That is the purpose of practice.
