Why is bringing a life jacket such a foreign concept to everyone??? Am I missing something? It seems like the most obvious thing to bring if you’re doing dangerous stuff in the water
I feel like if they had one they would have worn it? Also pretty basic to assume
Also even if they did have a life jacket, they are very light and would likely be blown away from her on the way down after being throw. If would then be carried away by the waves before she'd even see it
The term life jacket is incredibly misleading. It won't save your life, it will just keep your dead body floating. The waves they were dealing with would make a pfd useless for anyone except a search team after the fact. When the water comes up and over you and pushes you down with that kind of force the extra little bit of buoyancy isn't going to do anything for you.
So the person with the wetsuit in the water dealing with the waves is just going to stop and calmly put on a floatation device that will interfere with her ability to swim?
Life jackets are not magic helicopter rescue teams, they are something that helps keep you floating upright a little bit in calm waters. Great for floating down a slide river so you can use your hands to hold your beer instead of treading, worthless or dangerous in waters like this.
Please don't be in a situation where you have to save someone's life if this is the type of sidelined comment you make, it shows a huge misunderstanding in how... literally anything works, and would only increase the person's chances of dying.
Assuming they even had a life jacket, the camera guy would have to throw it, and the swimmer would have to somehow get it without it being swept away (which it would almost immidetly)
The swimmer would expend energy trying to get it that they would need to save themselves.
Gurl, does no one in this comment section know life jackets exist!?
Edit: I have way too much faith in humanity but these comments dropped that down quite a bit. I think I can see the Titanic from here. I sincerely hope none of y’all swim in anything deeper than a pool. I need a Tylenol
I think we're just all assuming they didn't bring one. Folks who have a full wetsuit aren't generally the types who need them. Usually surfers, strong swimmers, divers, etc. Very unlikely to have brought one. Besides, even if they did, that wouldn't help them get out??
… I’m sorry but this is one of the dumbest things I’ve read. I’ve lived my whole life water skiing and scuba diving and I’ve always at least brought a life jacket in case something like this happens.
And no, it won’t magically pull you out of the water, but it will prevent you from going under and drowning as you swim for the exit. Which clearly would have helped here since she fell to her hands and knees dry heaving out salt water at the end.
Which are things you bring and leave on the boat you use for those activities. Pretty standard for boat use. Not very standard for swimming unless you're bad at it
What's he gonna do, jump in after her?
No? Clearly, the camera person can fly
Throw a life jacket
Lmao that they make? Where do you think he'd get that from?

Life jacket won't do shit against that man
They're not smart enough to realize they shouldn't jump in. Why would they be smart enough to bring a life jacket or any other rescue aid?
They are young, confident, and immortal. At that age, one doesn't think they will ever die.

If you try help in this situation your more likely to become a statistic than a rescuer.
I figured they’d at least have a life jacket they could throw or something… but I’m probably giving people too much credit :/
Offering moral support from the sidelines is adequate in this case
Over a life jacket??

Learn to swim.

That jacket is not going to help when your pulp on the rocks
Wow! Hell of a way to get to Benguela via the current!

Its pretty standard in the UK to have a buoyancy compensator jacket when scuba diving.
She's scuba diving? I don't see a tank or fins... Lots of people wear wet suits just for swimming
How do you bring a life jacket scuba diving? Is it made of lead?
A lifejacket wouldn't do shit in this situation. The current and waves are way too strong. Please educate yourself.
