Hello everyone,

I’m looking for advice on BC PharmaCare Special Authority for Ozempic.

My concern is that I previously used Ozempic in 2023 for weight loss, paid out of pocket for 7 mos, and only stayed on starter doses (0.25–0.5 mg). I’m now on Income Assistance (Plan C) where Ozempic is covered with SA (full coverage).

I have a GP appointment next week and I’m worried my prior off-label use could affect approval. I also understand Metformin is usually required first, but I’m on another medication that may interact with it.

Questions: •Has anyone been approved for Ozempic through SA for T2D? •Were you able to bypass Metformin? •Does prior low-dose use help show tolerance for SA application?

Thanks in advance and happy holidays!

  • I wouldn't be too concerned about the prior use for weight loss. It really comes down to how your doctor submits the reasonings for Ozempic in your particular case. Not using Metformin as a first tier treatment may cause issues, especially if there only may be an interaction with your other medication. If there was a definitive reported interaction or there is a known and significant interaction between the Metformin and the other drug, then it may be approved. But a "it might have some interaction" may come back with a "try Metformin first to determine if there is an interaction and efficacy". I am not a doctor nor do I evaluate SA submissions, but I do know they don't vary much from their treatment tier guidelines without a really good and documented reason. But I am hoping it does get approved for you.

Edit, add info: Something to discuss with your doctor is Jardiance if the Ozempic doesn't pan out. Jardiance is also considered a first tier med like Metformin.

And Happy Holidays to you as well!
