I was just curious if anyone has tried this out. I was asking in another thread about if there were any third party apps that supported WhatsApp and I came across Beeper. Since there seems to be software already written to talk to WhatApp's protocol and API, but seemingly no alternative clients due to fear of Meta lawsuits (or just lack of interest?).
But, I came across Beeper. It was bought by Automattic, the company that runs Wordpress, so it has both some corporate backing and attempts to keep everything up to date and working - with mixed success.
As you can see from the image, while it looks like you can reply to a lot of people on different networks, you can't seem to create new chats directly from within Beeper for many of them it connects to. Regardless, it looks very interesting and their FAQ has details about their ideological stance on what they refer to as "private, siloed chat networks" (they don't like them).
It also looks like you can self host it too! But, I was just curious if anyone has tried this out or had any experience with it and what their feedback was.

It is amazing, I personally love it
Its just for the convenience of having all your chats from different services in one place
But for someone who is degoogling, they won't have 99% of those services(I think signal is the only private service they support)
So pretty useless (at least for me)
The only thing keeping me from using this is that SMS/MMS text isn't included for the Desktop app, unless you use Google Messages. According to their support, SMS/MMS support is asked about for deGoogled Android, so I'm hoping they implement it soon.
I only use Signal at the moment so not much gain for me by using this instead of the Signal mobile and Desktop apps for now.
Doesn't Google Voice do SMS?
I know many ppl have trouble convincing their friends to switch to different messaging platforms. So, I'm sure this might have a place for ppl with many contacts spread around.
But you might look at what's available if you self host.
Interesting. Is this the only Google Message client that supports RCS? I hadn't seen one before.
I do not know
Signal hopefully soon has post quantum encryption. It'll be the only option for me.
