The 70s has so much cheeseball soft rock, pop, and disco. Maybe it has been forgotten to time but the bulk of 70s hits sound a lot more like "Afternoon Delight" than they do Black Sabbath.
70s also had disco, whereas the Beatles had a lot of heavier stuff. The 60s are split into two halves. It’s also fair to say that the Beatles influenced most mainstream music in some way for the next 30-40 years. Bands like oasis were often criticised for trying to sound like the Beatles
Sort. But grunge didn't dominate as much as thought and the styles and vibes from it took some years to really take over. Late 90s went more pop music again but the college age set had been raised on grunge and gangster and guys tended to avoid pop like the plague so if you were among late teens/early 20-somethings guys it felt no so very pop at all. But if you just turned on the radio yeah it was shifting more pop. But still a ton of Eminem and 50 Cent and so on though too.
It got more truly fully pop once you got to mid-2000s through early 10s. And the color and more fun pop vibe was more fully there again.
Literally nobody thinks of those when imagining the 1980s. Most of those got popular in the 1990s and were unheard of in the 80s. You’re always making dumbass, out of touch comments like this.
Meanwhile there was tons of stuff like this (among other stuff, although not other stuff like you mention) was actually all over the charts, MTV, high school dances, movies, etc.:
I mean Mozart and Beethoven and Debussy and Ravel and Copeland and Rogers & Hammerstein and Bernstein and Albeniz & Granadas and so on were around in the 80s too but are you going to define the 80s as the era of those composers??
This is such a dumb post because why did you lump the 90s and 2000s as grungy when the 2000s were more flashier than the 90s and had other definitive genres? And the 2010s and 2020s aren’t the same at all for music. 70s also had Disco which is far from grim.
I lump them together because I associate the 00s with post hardcore, nu metal, emo pop then around 2010 we got softer indie rock and hipster stomp clap stuff
the 2000s quickly shifted toward more and more pop and by 2004 also had a lot of bright colors and grunge style and vibe was no longer everything and not even dominant though
later 10s and start of 2000s didn't seem that upbeat overall for music
60s had different parts
etc.
but I do get the overall somewhat grittier to more upbeat pop sound and back and forth for dominant new sounds
Grunge was a small part of the 90s, the big artists were Whitney and Mariah. Nirvana had it's moment and dragged some other grunge bands mainstream as well, but mainstream pop stars with big label backings always dominate
Both styles of music are always being created and listened to.
The 70s has so much cheeseball soft rock, pop, and disco. Maybe it has been forgotten to time but the bulk of 70s hits sound a lot more like "Afternoon Delight" than they do Black Sabbath.
late 10s to now is def slower and dark music, all the top charters be slow songs nowadays
yeah

I mean yeah but also:
60s got the Doors. 70s got disco fever. 80s gave us the sisters of mercy. 90s had the Spice Girls...
I wouldn’t mind a early-mid 90s revival in the 2030s
the generation & their cultures never went away
?
It honestly depends on the era of a certain decade as early 90s music consisted of Grunge while late 90s music consisted of Teen Pop.

80s industrial, grunge ( when it came up ), goth, gangsta rap ( when it came up ), proto death metal / death metal, crust, grindcore
so bright and upbeat

Yeah and where were they on the charts? On mainstream radio? On MTV?
If you are just going to pick some little alt set of music or style or whatnot you can turn any era into anything. That's not the point.

I mean Mozart and Beethoven and Debussy and Ravel and Copeland and Rogers & Hammerstein and Bernstein and Albeniz & Granadas and so on were around in the 80s too but are you going to define the 80s as the era of those composers??
There are markets for both music since popular music started.
Nu metal was kore party music compared to grunge

later 10s and start of 2000s didn't seem that upbeat overall for music

Let's see. Early 2010s upbeat, mid 2010s not upbeat, late 2010s not upbeat, early 2020s upbeat, mid 2020s not upbeat. Sometimes but not always.
Grunge was a small part of the 90s, the big artists were Whitney and Mariah. Nirvana had it's moment and dragged some other grunge bands mainstream as well, but mainstream pop stars with big label backings always dominate
I wouldn't describe the 70s as "grimy", it was filled with loads of soft hippie rock plus upbeat funk and disco
The 2000s wasn’t grungy
2000s wasn’t that grungy, we got hollaback girl and just dance that decade.
It’s both at the same time: bright for the children of the rich and grungy for the children of the poor.
