Now that I think about it we never really see Trunks do anything with his sword outside of swinging it around here and there.

He uses it to defeat Frieza and spar with Goku for a second. Then in the Goku Black arc, his sword is used once every 3rd episode for like 20 seconds, in which the most notable thing accomplished by it is him achieving the Spirit Sword to defeat Zamasu.

But we really never see him really accomplish, or at the very least 'flex' his swordsmanship skills (assuming he has any lol) despite one of the most notable things regarding him is having a sword as his main weapon.

Just seems pretty damning looking back at it

  • I love how his sword grew massive with king colds size

I know. It looks ridiculous when you think about it. 😀 Maybe it would have been better if Trunks showed up with a huge 2 handed sword like Cloud Stife.

Or multiple swords that merge into one… also like Cloud Strife.

    And he was cold

Or King Cold just increased the size

  • He uses it constantly and defeated THREE big villains with it (Freeza, Dabura, and Zamasu). What are you talking about?

In fairness to OP, the longest stretch of time that Trunks has featured in Dragon Ball was the Androids arc, where he breaks his sword pretty early on

I was going to say that too, he breaks that thing. Even in Movie 7 he breaks the dang sword.

Edit: thinking about it, he must have spares. Like a sword closet next to his jacket closet.

Frieza was cool but short. Debura was just a flashback and Zamusu well...it was cool but all that happened is slice him and then he becomes merged with the timeline.

It just sounds like you don't like Trunks' accomplishments. They're fine, dude. They're actually better than 99% of the cast's.

I am not denying that he used the Sword more than that. He did use it for example in the first Goku black fight but It could have been used cooler. That's what OP is trying to say.

  • They pretty much buried its' usefulness when they showed Goku parrying it with his bare finger

Or when the androids broke it

Or when Dabura spit on it

Huh. Does that mean 2nd sword?

No idea where, who or how he fixes his sword?

He spat on the Z Sword not Trunks' sword

  • I’m more upset his super saiyan rage thing didn’t turn out to be him unlocking blue and god ki from a combination of passion and exposing himself to god ki from Goku, Vegeta and Zamasu, therefore leveling him up enough to defend his universe from future threats…which was promptly erased. Ugh, Trunks really got the worst of it in Super.

Yeah, I don't get it, just fucking give it to him. I thought the spirit sword was cool though

  • That scene of him tearing Frieza to pieces remains my favorite DBZ moment ever. The aura is off the charts

probably one of the most badass character intros ever made, if not the most badass

“I’m gonna show you what it’s like to fight a real super saiyan….and I’m not talking about Goku.”

imo Resurrection F made that whole scene even more metal than it already was by establishing that Freeza was still alive when he was cut up into pieces - he didn’t actually die until Trunks' final blast.

Presumably it’s this same ability/crazy biology that allowed him to survive in space with half his head blown off after Namek exploded. You just gotta disintegrate that fucker to keep him down.

  • What's more criminal is you posting two pictures of him and one of them he's not using a sword in it!

  • Trunks casually giving king cold his own sword and then effortlessly catching it when it was swung back at him might be the hardest badass moment in the entire Dragonball series

    Also it got way bigger

  • The enemies he usually faces are too strong for just the sword to do much damage. Even when he used it to destroy Zamasu’s body, it was literally just a hilt a piece of the blade at the base of the guard. When he tried using it on 18, it got broken too. When he used it against Goku, it was blocked and intercepted.

Honestly, the fight against Black and Zamasu 2v2/3 was the most we see him fighting consistently with it but he was being matched by their energy blade before his sword got broken.

In each case he obtained even more power and more Ki that he probably could use to enhance the sword- he usually doesn’t and instead uses techniques like blasts and explosive waves. He lost it against Androids- so he never used it on any Cell, He threw it away during his fight with Dabura cuz it got spit on, etc

Honestly, he should convert his Ki into a construct like he did with the energy blade Genki Dama as a regular weapon that can actually last against opponents. Have the blade change with whatever form/Ki he’s using. Then last resort he can use the Genki Dama to power it.

I’d say make it out of an indestructible material but we saw what happened to the ToP stage

The enemies he usually faces are too strong for just the sword to do much damage.

I always assumed his ki is being infused into the sword, otherwise there is no way it would be able to cut Frieza.

It is but however much we don’t really know and the most advanced form of spirit control we’ve seen of him reinforcing the sword with energy was when he created a Super Saiyan sword and then turned it into a Spirit Sword with the Genki Dama.

That’s why I’m like he should just always do that technique rather than just using the sword itself and simply boosting it. Or find a way to create a sword with his own power through magic or something like Piccolo or Dabura does

Idk it's no different from using your ki to make your fist stronger? Goku got hurt by a rock while relaxing, but can also tank bullets to the face. Concentrating on ki basically amps your durability to insane levels, so Trunk's sword is basically as strong as Trunks himself, because he's just coating the sword in ki the same way he would his body.

    That's my understanding anyways.

He just uses the sword to farm aura.

  • Storywise it made sense, Androids 17 and 18 were just too strong and broke his sword.

Also, since Androids 19 and 20 were originally meant to be the ones that Trunks warned about, I think the sword was meant as a tool to counter their energy absorption. Once Toriyama gave up on 19 and 20, it didn't made sense for Trunks to use the sword anymore.

I think it was more like - when piccolo was survival training gohan as a kid, he gave gohan a sword. Gohan probably did the same for trunks.

  • Think of it from a writing perspective, what do you really expect he could've done with it beyond what he did? The androids broke it because they were stronger than him and if he'd brought it out again (repaired or replaced) once he was stronger, he'd have killed them, which wouldn't work for the story... Alternatively if he used it on Cell, it would've just broke again, or done nothing and been pointless.

The problem with a sword in Dragon Ball is that either it's effective and can cut through people (essentially being a free win) or it's basically blunt and might as well be a stick. Either way, it doesn't add much to the story beyond the cool moments that we already got when it was time for Trunks to shine.

Honestly watching some HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) matches, I think that there could be some really interesting fight scenes if his sword didn't get destroyed as much

There's a specific match on YouTube of two people using swords and flint locks (rubber band guns shaped like flint locks), and I think some of the same stances could be applied to Dragon Ball

Assuming your off hand can become a gun (ki blast) at will, a sword fighter with a ki reinforce sword could switch from a two handed to a one handed stance to shoot a ki attack

If the person you are fighting doesnt have a sword, and is going against you hand to hand, you have a lot of movement options to use. Especially if they are equal in strength, they block with one hand like Goku, switch to one handed and shoot a ki attack (a stance that Trunks for sure has done). If they block one handed, but near the center of the blade, you could use it as a pivot point, and swing around back, especially since Trunks can fly.

Two handed blocks seem like they would essentially enter a bind, but in HEMA if you bind with a broadsword like Trunks has, you can twist your blade to attempt to get out, Trunks could do something similar to break someone's grip on his sword, or he could follow up with some kick or flip

I think a Manga author that liked Trunks could draw some really interesting fight scenes if he was allowed to keep his sword for a longer period of time

  • Weapons don't work unless your opponent is weaker than you

  • The sword is just a toy. Why would a piece of metal be able to damage a guy who can withstand the explosion of a planet? Obviously, there's ki involved, like in HxH with nen.

  • my issue is him not using it for most of z

  • My favorite character in the franchise.

Then in the Goku Black arc it doesn't matter what anyone does. Goku needs to call Zeno to delete the whole timeline.

And in what shall be considered the laziest writing in any anime, Whis just creates a new timeline for future trunks.

It would have been too easy for him to leave and train so he could show up later. Naw, he's gone forever.

  • Please don remind me of super, it killed his aura

  • Is Trunk's sword magical in that whoever wields it, it changes size?

  • Doesn’t he literally use it WAY more than any other method?…. wtf lol

  • Point of Order: I did find it funny when the animators made the sword bigger to match King Cold’s physical size when he’s holding it.

  • Its hard to use it though, because if he uses it and what just fights and swings and misses or he fights connects but does no damage because fight needs to last longer, or he fights uses it, lands and fights over.

There is no power level curve with the sword to use, you cant land with it, then not be able to land with it, it does damage, then it does not do damage etc etc.

That would be my reasoning for not seeing more of his sword.

  • God that scene was so stupid.

  • His sword gets destroyed all the time.

    Who fixes that thing? Lmao

  • Speaking of swords why does Trunks use a sword ?

  • I mean people are kinda to the point of being too strong to be hurt by materials, know what I mean?

Like his sword got powercrept, lol

  • Because hes not a swordsman, just a guy who happens to use a sword

  • Which wins: trunks sword or yajirobes...

Whats trunks sword made out of just steel or something?

  • I think this has to do with where Toriyama's action interests had shifted by this point in the story. Much earlier on, Dragon Ball was pretty focused on fight choreography, specifically with regards to spacing. Where people were spaced relative to one another was often VERY important, especially in instances like the Tenkaichi Budokai, where a fighter's position in the arena heavily mattered. By the time of the first Vegeta fight, basically everyone could fly, and everyone had some sort of Generic Ki Blast attack, and pretty soon that's mostly what the fights became about: who can make the biggest blast? Who can pull out more and more POWER. The Freeza arc is all about Power Levels, and while the Cell arc abandons the specific numbers, the background philosophy is the same: Bigger Power Wins. Positioning didn't matter anymore, because anyone could just fly anywhere.

Unfortunately I think weapon usage is a casualty of the latter-day approach to a Dragon Ball fight. The logistics of the fight (outside of some VERY sick panels here or there, like in Gohan vs Cell) didn't really facilitate a space where having a weapon would make much of a difference. Trunks showed up at the exact wrong time for his sword to really get much long-term use.

  • Future Trunks's sword should've been portrayed like his equivalent to Goku's Power Pole, a one-of-a-kind tool with sentimental value to the character that acts as an extension of their martial arts skills. If Dragonball's Son Goku is like the Monkey King, then Trunks could've displayed the character and fighting style of an honest, loyal, good-hearted, futuristic knight (mixed with the martial arts he learned, of course). I liked the alternate backstories of Tapion giving young Present Trunks his sword in the Wrath of the Dragon movie and Future Trunks pulling out the Z Sword on Supreme Kai Shin's homeworld as Present Gohan did.

But the weapon's origin could've been much simpler. Ex- He could've exposited to the Z Fighters in the past at some point that Future Bulma made it for him using the strongest materials she could find to work with from the ruins of Capsule Corp.'s destroyed manufacturing plant. She wanted her son to have some kind of weapon to help protect him in a fight and debated what to build that a Super Saiyan might find useful. She considered a high-tech. firearm, but figured that would be redundant since Trunks could already use ki blasts far stronger than what any of her machines could produce. Then, she recalled how skilled young Goku was with his staff.

Future Gohan never trained Trunks to use a staff, though, so Bulma looked elsewhere for ideas. Suddenly, she remembered a videotape he used to watch all the time as a toddler about a brave knight who used a magic sword to kill an evil dragon, rescue a Princess, and save her kingdom (Disney reference). He'd talk about it occasionally, as it was one of his only positive childhood memories, and the story gave him hope for saving his world someday. Sometimes, he'd practice swordsmanship with sticks or metal rods he found too.

Finding her inspiration, Bulma spent the next few months secretly working on this whenever Trunks wasn't around, treating it as a much easier side-project alongside building her time machine. On her son's 16th birthday, she surprised him with what could technologically be the strongest sword on the planet. Filled with happiness for the first time in years, Trunks thanked his mom and began practicing day & night, applying the martial arts disciplines Gohan taught him to develop basic sword technique on his own and learn to focus his ki through it to make every strike several times more powerful. If/when it broke in battle, Bulma could fix it.

Sadly, after Goku Black/Zamasu killed her, nobody else understood the sword's unique craftsmanship well enough to replicate it. His mom never wrote down a formula, as the construction was mostly her experimenting with blending the raw materials until she found the strongest result. Every time she repaired it, she made it at least a little better. Without the details of its exact makeup, even other versions of Bulma couldn't recreate it. Thankfully, after the battle with Zamasu, Trunks learned from his experience wielding the Spirit/Genki Sword of Hope. After training further to hone his ki control, he learned to generate a ki sword at will that would permanently replace his obsolete metal one. Eventually, he'd even learn to form duel swords and larger sizes similar to the Sword of Hope. Vastly stronger & sharper than any similar move used before (even Vegeto's), Trunks would employ this new signature technique in his beloved mother's memory.

  • YES! I always thought Toriyama should have had him swrodfight 17 in order to allow the ship with Goku to escape or something. Maybe 17 just forms a ki blade or he simply parries trunks' strikes with ki blasts. Also him and Gokua should have been a swirdfight I don't care that it's a tournoment in story. Have him have it in a capsule just in case. Also the anime should have had him swordfight Dabura like the manga.

  • Ha, never noticed that Trunks sword got massive when Cold held it

  • It’s essentially useless. Unless it the one from the first pic

  • I think it was the editors fault. Due to the editor not satisfied with the Androids design. So Dr. Gero got replaced too quickly.

Trunks, Kid Gohan, and Tenshinhan missed their chances. And instead, the Z Fighters fought 17 and 18 and was dispatched too easy.

  • In Retrospect Cell should have had the same absorption ability as his siblings. That would justify Trunks keeping his distance as he slashes .

  • Same with Gohan and the Beast Axe.

I think you mean the Z Sword back in the Buu Saga.
