A friend of mine, named David, mentioned that his new grandchild will be born with 'three passports". Naturally, that got me thinking about the other David. And then I got curious about how that line has evolved over the years with different arrangements, staging and vocal emphasis. Enjoy!

  • My daughter's have two but are entitled to three. I only have two passports but I do have a couple of visas.

  • Thanks for this!

Not that I would presume to rewrite the song...but I keep thinking that changing "passports" to "cell phones" would be a cool update. Anyone traveling with more than one cell phone must be up to something. Maybe something good. Maybe something bad.

I also really admire how in the current tour he turned this into a protest song. I don't think we were meant to take it seriously when it came out - it was just a cool cinematic vignette. But after seeing the latest stage version, I take it much more seriously now.

I have loved this song for more than 40 years and the visuals on the screen were very powerful to me when I saw this live. I always felt like it was such an imaginary and abstract song concept, but the connection to present day was really jarring. I hate that I have to take this song somewhat seriously now...

Yes, that's how I felt when I saw it. I hate that we need to take it seriously now.

And transforming it was a brilliant choice.

  • It’s conceivable I suppose that at one point David did actually have three passports: UK, Canada, and US.

  • Are people.missing that the song's protaganist doesn't really have legit passorts / citizenship in all those countries?

  • I know someone that has three - British, American and Jamaican and could get a fourth from Italy as well.
