Interesting but the histomap clearly shows its age. For what it's worth, I reckon Chinese civilization in the Qing dynasty era (1644–1911) had more influence than is depicted. Suzhou, for example, was major cultural centre spreading ideas and materials through the silk road. It was also the largest non-capital city in the world for much of the 19th century.
Similarly, the influence of the British empire at the beginning of the 20th century is understated. By the turn of the 20th century, it occupied a quarter of Earth's landmass and governed 458 million people, a full fifth of the world's population.
