Hey all, I've been trying to move my data from one Synology box to another with little luck. Here's my setup:
- Old Synology is a RS815+ with 4 bay expansion (approx 60TB with 8 drive bays total)
- New Synology is a RS4017xs+ (approx 170TB with 16 drive bays total)
I've got close to 60TB of data to move over to the new box. I've tried these options:
- Hyper Backup: It works but compresses all the data in a package that appears to be only accessible from Hyper Backup.
- Synology Migration Assistant: Again, it appears to work but it also wipes all control panel settings and users, then migrates settings from old NAS - and it's still in beta. Not sure I want to risk using it.
- Mounting Shares: This has been pretty frustrating. I can mount a CIFS share but the transfer speeds are very slow and always error out during the transfer. I've not been able to mount an NFS share. I always get errors when attempting to mount.
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of scenario?
Any reason why you can't mount both NAS and rsync the data over?
Ignore me, my reply was geared toward a different sub, and it looks like you already attempted some variation. Sorry.

I've been in a similar situation multiple times over many generations of Synology boxes. The fastest (and most reliable) option that I've found, sadly, is GoodSync for Mac or GoodSync for Windows (essentially a GUI version of rsync with a *ton* of extra features). If on a mac, mount using AFS (e.g. Launch Finder... Cmd+K... afp://Diskstation.local/Share) - not SMB - it is much, much faster. If on windows, obviously SMB is the only option. Alternatively
To speed things up I have installed 10 gig ethernet on all the Synology boxes and I use external 10 gig ethernet adapters on the laptops that run the sync. For example:
https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility?search_by=category&category=network_interface_cards&p=1 (Synology)https://www.promise.com/Products/SANLink/SANLink3-N1 (Thunderbolt 3 PCs/Mac)https://www.promise.com/Products/SANLink/SANLink2/10G-BaseT (Thunderbolt 2 Macs)
You will need a 10Gb switch to connect them all. It gets expensive quickly. With spinning disks and SHR or RAID 5 or RAID it will only be 2x to 3x faster than 1Gb ethernet because of the read/write speed limits.
I’ve already got a 10Gbe network in place but the old Synology RS815+ doesn’t have any spots for addin cards.
Think I’ve settled on using Shared Folder Sync. I think that’ll accomplish what I’m looking for.
