Hi ho,
Been a couple of years since I have played the OG game. I have spent the last little while playing more modern stuff like Lies of P, Elden Ring, etc.
Decided to do a comfort playthrough of DS1 and man is it kicking my ass. I have beaten DS1 multiple times (platinum run included) so I'm confident in saying I know the game. Regardless Giant Knights are smacking the crap out of me, O&S took me multiple tries, I even lost to ceaseless discharge for the first time 🤣.
I find it comforting though that this game can still be a challenge when coming back to it though. I can be great at Elden Ring but if I want to be good at Dark Souls I have to be prepared to engage it on its terms.
I forgot how unforgiving equip load was back in the day especially if you wanted to split into vitg physical and faith/int. I forgot that omnidirectional rolling doesn't exist and you have to account for that. Etc etc
I'm basically just kissing the games keister right now but whatever. Still a fun comfort playthrough even if I find myself yelling at the screen every now and then.
It definitely kicks your ass a bit when you come back to it after being used to the quality of life adjustments among the newer games.
Man I got a switch 2 recently so I thought I'd get DSR and play it for the 1,000th time on a new platform, haven't done a run for a few years but I thought I'd do something I've never done before, a melee int focused build, everything was going well, almost felt too easy, but as soon as I killed O&S I bolted straight for Dukes Archives so I could quickly finish logans questline and get the moonlight greatsword...
Trying to solo seath without skipping his tail weapon on an int focused build, I had no idea a challenge like this still existed in DkS.. absolute misery, I ended up farming invaders in the cat forest to power level and max out my pyromancy flame, I don't know how I would have it done it if it wasn't coincidentally RTL, probably would have resorted to duping.
If you're on this subreddit Lucky Jack.. Thanks for invading me so much, sorry for all the backstabs <3
It doesn't help that seaths tail has a very small hitbox. Somehow I can hack off Priscilla's tiny tail mid-fight or reliably than I can seath.
Not that I would ever do anything to Priscilla, of course....
ofcourse... ₺ofcourse...*

some tailcuts can be so fucking ridiculous. it's just silly when the boss fight itself is a joke, but getting the tail is apparently the hardest thing in the game cause the fuckers just wont stop moving.
had a similar issue with kalameet.
I got my butt kicked by Gaping Dragon yesterday. I don't really remember having major issues in the past.
Totally agree. In Sen’s I got hot by the lightning magic into one of the swinging axes, and plummeted to my death and I just smiled. It’s oddly nostalgic.Â
I was farming demon titanite last night at the bottom of sens. Took me way too long to kill those 4 things. With over a thousand hp they were still somehow 1 shoting me with that leap attack ðŸ˜
Yup I always assume I'll come back to DS1 and it will be easy but get a reality check fast. I think due to the methodical approach the enemies can fuck you up more than newer Souls, as they rely mainly on spamming or rolling.
It reminds me of Katana Zero. At the start the enemies use melee weapons and telegraph attacks, still difficult but you get used to it. But by the end they have guns and you're literally deflecting bullets and feel like Neo. Then you restart the game and suddenly the first enemies feel difficult again because your timing is wired too fast.
So true. Lot of times it's the basic hollows ripped me a new one especially when they do that berserker slashing. And the torch hollows...
I genuinely enjoy playing one the most. It was the first one I ever played, and I felt that I haven't enjoyed any of the other From games as much as the first one. I always get sloppy when switching between 1 and ER because they are so different feeling. I still like one the best because of the way its multiplayer matchmaking works (invaders don't always invade 2v1s lol its mostly 1v1s)
I wouldn't call it hard, at least not for me. But it will from time to time humble you, and remember you to not get cocky. Few days ago I was playing and Quelaag made me get stuck between her lava and the walls of the arena. The lava stagger locked me to death. The problem is, I didn't got the bonfire before her because I wanted to just bone out and return to firelink without making all the way up.
Yeah ceaseless discharge is tearing me a new one.
I breezed through most of the game on my return until tomb of the giants, forgot how much that place fucking sucks. It’s really a shame because I tend to head there after Anor Londo.
Going from the glory of defeating O&S to that is just so disappointing. The second half of the game just falls off a cliff in terms of enjoyment for me.
I saved Tomb of the Giants until the end of my first playthrough, which made it slightly more bearable, but that place is just pure misery and not fun.
Sadly I almost never die anymore so I can't say the same. :(
Tbh I played DS1 for I don't know how many times but to me it was easy I know I know you will say WHAT DS1 EASY YOU ARE A SICK MAN..... but yeah 😂🔥
Oh I get it. I managed a sub 2 hour run back when I was doing my plat run. At one point I found the game super easy. Im moreso happy that the skill ceiling is high enough that if you leave for awhile it's gonna take some practice to get back to that point.
