NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Residents in Donelson’s Merry Oaks subdivision have been speaking out about new signage for one area hotel, claiming it’s just too bright.
Katie Winter Fay and Stephen Dunn, who have lived in the neighborhood for about five years, told News 2 they noticed a new sign at the La Quinta Inn & Suites on Antrim Way about a month ago. Fay claimed the signage isn’t facing the highway. Instead, it’s changed the lighting in her backyard and shines brightly through her windows.
Because the private access road behind the hotel on Atrium Drive has little to no traffic, Fay questions why the signs are so bright.
“The other hotel signs aren’t as big,” Fay said. “This one is huge. Two names of the hotels huge, It’s just an eye sore and not saving the highway, so why is it shining all in our neighborhood here at Merry Oaks?”
Dunn said despite having large trees, the level of brightness has caused light pollution in a residential area.
“I earnestly couldn’t believe it,” Dunn says. “It’s directly behind my house and I have a couple large trees and a lot of bamboo that has blocked the view of the hotel and it is bright enough that it lights up my whole backyard.”
Dunn didn’t see an issue with the old sign and said he would prefer if the sign went back to its original form or moved to the other side of the building.
“Yeah, it’s an obnoxious level and it just doesn’t seem to make sense at all,” Dunn said. “Even if it was facing the highway it’s like the sign doesn’t need to be that bright ever.”
Both neighbors said would prefer the signage to either face the highway or be dimmed for residents. News 2 reached out to the La Quinta Inn & Suites for comment, but as of publication, there’s been no response.
