Our electricity is expensive as fuck, its no utopia here and all the problems you have elsewhere are trickling in as well. We have it better than most but everything is expensive the major cities are crime ridden shitholes and there are no jobs in smaller towns.
Where did you hear this?? Domestic flights and electricity is ridiculously expensive, not to mention there have been 2/3 outages in the last 2 years… I’ll never understand people who just openly lie on the internet lmao
Personal experience. Auckland to Christchurch is like $75. Electricity is generally more expensive in island economies than on continents; much of NZ’s is from renewables, which are expensive up front but obviously pay off down the line in other ways. Better than the Aussies, who are still burning coal like it’s going out of style.
Is it? I didn't think it could get much worse than southern Ontario. Like I know there's some expensive big cities out there but even small towns in Ontario you're not finding a house for less than $400,000 and that's probably a pretty shitty house. In Toronto good luck buying a tiny condo for less than $600,000. When you consider the average $130,000 (so around $75k per person) and that the median is significantly lower than that (around $97k per household) I just don't know how people can survive here.
That's the same in Canada. With the median being higher around 775k.
Average income is 54k for individuals.
And average home price in the Toronto area is $1m+
We are not in a good situation here for sure. Sounds like you guys are hovering pretty similar but your salaries are better, hovering at 72k for individuals.
We did something similar. We were living in a condo and wanted to get out of the city and bought a house just outside Toronto for like 820k but we couldn't sell the condo so we rented instead. Then we decided to move way far out and get away from everyone and bought a farm for 800 but it was the height of COVID so we were able to sell our home for 1.1m which is fucking insane because it went up that much after less than two years.
So it helped us cut our mortgage by a lot and pay down some of the condo. It's still tight despite us both having good jobs so I wanna sell the condo still to have that weight off but now's just not a good time. And our tenant would have to find a place with way higher rent if we kick her out and we don't want to do that to her.
Try living in Vancouver. Three quarters of a million for a two bedroom on the highway in Richmond is crazy work for a district with fucking nothing in it. I genuinely don't understand what the price is based on down there.
The maori weren't genocided. We didn't exactly treat them well, but we didn't go that far. They make up 18% of the population, so even if there was an attempt, it obviously wasn’t successful
Well, not EVERYONE. If it was everyone, no one would talk about it or even care. "Leave none to tell the tale" comes from a real mindset back in "ye olden days". If you truly want to eradicate something, you need to get rid of all of it.
Māori are party to the founding of New Zealand through te tiriti o waitangi and have had representation in parliament through specific Māori electorates for more than 150 years so it kinda goes without saying that the "Māori nation" is Aotearoa New Zealand as much as it is the "Pākehā nation".
But if you're talking about the Musket Wars and the Land Wars then yeah, New Zealand certainly hasn't been without violence in the past
I think people are confusing New Zealand/Maori relations with Australian/Aboriginal relations. Which are very different both historically and currently.
European settlers to New Zealand have been far from perfect. But compared to almost every other colonial power throughout history they were practically saints. (Which admittedly says more about almost every other colonial power throughout history)
The only thing that’s not beautiful about New Zealand is car centrism, highways and big parking lots. It's actually ridiculous how a country so far away can feel so much like the US
It's comments like these that really remind me to be skeptical of what i read here because of how people confidently spout off complete nonsense on reddit and it somehow has a decent amount of upvotes
i said this with proper sources backing me up, I agree that it's a problem online but when it comes to car centrism, the US is actually really freaking bad and NZ is not far behind, you can look it up quite easily.
Altho to NZ credit, they're doing better at combating it and their cities are better. but suburban/rural areas are very car centric, if you've seen anything from NZ you'd know this
New Zealand is very car centric because theres 5 million people spread over an area about the size of england on 2 big islands.
Large areas of the country you just cant make public transport work because of the giant distances between homes and stores so they need cars (see west coast)
The smaller towns are small enough that you either walk, bike or drive. Buses really only being for people who cant (schools and some retirement homes have like buses to drive their residences)
Look at like Christchurch
Tons of cars sure but a great bus network. I can walk or bus basically anywhere.
Car centrism comes from low population and giant distances. I would love a great train network so i can visit my friends in different cities but Dunedin is 360 km from Christchurch
Wellington is 435 km with a ferry.
If you want to go to another city flights can be pretty cheap. I think my Sibling flew from Christchurch to Wellington for like 200 dollars round trip with 3? people. (may have been 2)
You really just cant undo car centrism in rural areas of NZ because it just doesnt work. It'd always be a massive money sink for tiny results.
Like Compare Sydney to New Zealand
Similar population Very big difference in density. They have like 240 passenger trains (According to wikipedia) where as to do that with nz you'd need signifcantly more.
Rural areas are indeed dependent on cars. I think that's fairly true of anywhere. They've since edited their original comment but they were saying stuff about big parking lots which is just untrue. Parking in Auckland is a premium commodity, with on street parking becoming more and more rare in the built up areas.
At the same time, it's always been very walkable. I walked and cycled everywhere growing up and never had any problems except with getting over the Harbour bridge, which I had to bus to school for. Compared to other cities around the world I've since lived in, Auckland and other major nz cities are very walkable. I've lived in 8 million + cities where the footpaths (side-walk for our American friends) are ad hoc and very much an afterthought. In New Zealand you will find you can walk nearly anywhere on developed and unbroken routes. Public transport is a problem in many areas yes, but if you want to go car-free it is possible.
Yeah I live in Christchurch "Car Free" isnt possible its regular. Parking its uber expensive as its mostly all privately owned by those dog crap companies.
Like Sydneys public transport is way better than christchurchs but having expirenced both christchurchs buses are very viable.
youre not wrong, but in this case i do have sources to back myself up, it's not hard to find multiple sources that mention the car problem in new zealand.
i even found one source just now just to double check that says that NZ might be more car centric than the US, which from my experience isn't quite true, obv depends city to city but I would still say the US is worse, but NZ is not far behind
I would love to see these sources because they have to be a farkin piss take, cities in nz are in no way shape or form entirely dependant on cars, people can and do walk or cycle or use public transport,A and parking lots are tiny. Source: I farkin live here bro.
Let me see these big parking lots, my woolies is a fucking madhouse. Maybe 25 spots for a grocery store, people cram cars anywhere they fit. Sidewalks, grass, turning lane, it's wild.
Meanwhile, 80,000+ Kiwis leave New Zealand, everyone six months. More than their birth rate. Due to economic factors, such as the weak domestic economy, a lack of high-paying job opportunities, and high housing costs.
I think memes like these are usually posted by people who dont actually live in the place they are trying to glaze. No nation has 100 percent no beef with anyone.
To be fair green peace throughout its history has regularly been against generally good things. Not just specifically bad instances of it, but the entirety of those things in general. Like nuclear energy, which is clean, safe, and practically unlimited. They even had a campaign against chlorine, like chlorinated water which has been proven to be a safe and effective means of cheaply making water safe to drink. There's even been suspicions of them being funded by oil companies in an attempt to discredit nuclear energy.
In this specific instance they were planning to lead a bunch of yachts to try and prevent french nuclear weapons testing in the south pacific. Certainly a better cause than going against nuclear energy, but regardless, I really don't care for greenpeace and was by no means upset when I learned about the incident. And I was only disappointed in france insofar that they managed to bungle the sinking so hard they got caught almost immediately.
I also highly recommend the manga. The anime only covers about half of the story, and no new season has been announced for a while. The manga just ended earlier this year.
Nah Aussies are all good. We like to take the piss out of each other but at the end of the day we don't have beef. Until it comes to sports like Rugby then it's all on.
They're also the most strategically impossible to invade due to their geographical location, which makes logistics and a land invasion a nightmare. But the country is also one of the least valuable countries strategically and possibly resource wise, in my opinion. Unless they have a resource valuable enough for an invasion.
Someone, please, tell me what strategic value New Zealand has? Or is the country just your fall out shelter location?
Think you have us confused with Aus. There are zero large predators in NZ, no snakes, no scorpions, and only two spiders that are considered "medically significant" with one of them being an endangered species.
Our endemic life is perhaps the least dangerous in the world.
[deleted]
We’ve been down for a while now, they’ve waited long enough to start kicking again
I wouldnt recommend that at this time, people are going mad over it currently- and probably will for a few weeks/months.
Just don't ask about cost of living and housing costs
Oh boo hoo that’s everywhere
it’s a lot worse in NZ than almost anywhere
And don’t forget that the only real modern infrastructure they have are roads.
For a developed nation with such a small population, their healthcare infrastructure is depressingly bad.
Pretty dang good rail system between the major cities, and domestic flights are super cheap. They have very reliable and affordable electricity, too.
Our electricity is expensive as fuck, its no utopia here and all the problems you have elsewhere are trickling in as well. We have it better than most but everything is expensive the major cities are crime ridden shitholes and there are no jobs in smaller towns.

Thats probably why you guys aren't faring so well.

Average house in NZ is over 700k nzd, or nearly 500k usd
That's the same in Canada. With the median being higher around 775k.
Average income is 54k for individuals.
And average home price in the Toronto area is $1m+
We are not in a good situation here for sure. Sounds like you guys are hovering pretty similar but your salaries are better, hovering at 72k for individuals.
Sounds like here in CT. Cheap house were 200k 5 years ago. Now you cant look at a house less than 500k somewhere outside the city.
Yeah it's absolutely brutal. Good luck existing over the next few decades.
I got lucky and bought right before covid, otherwise my family would be in a double wide now
We did something similar. We were living in a condo and wanted to get out of the city and bought a house just outside Toronto for like 820k but we couldn't sell the condo so we rented instead. Average house cost in Australia is $1,016,700 AUD or 676,110.58 USD.
Thats insane. Except from my understanding the property tax is a one time payment and is paid at time of purchase and rolled into the mortgage.
Try living in Vancouver. Three quarters of a million for a two bedroom on the highway in Richmond is crazy work for a district with fucking nothing in it. I genuinely don't understand what the price is based on down there.
There was a post the other day about space in a backyard selling for 1.1M.
The worst part? That's actually not uncommon in a lot of areas.
AirBnBs and other real-estate investors are really fucking up the housing market for normal ass people, but what else is new.
Is that New Zealand’s problem too?
This will almost every person tell you about their homecountry.
How much is it though? Here in Germany in my city you get a 2 room flat starting at 800€ and ending at 2k €
I’d say that’s plenty already, I’m actually thinking about moving to NZ. How much for a flat in a city?
When I visited, it was around 2500 € for the low end
It’s everywhere but like ten times worse in NZ
a century of raising the bar on land usage catching up to everyone now
Ironically mostly in places that speak English
Aren't tons of people leaving new Zealand? Pretty much using it as a way to get into Australia?
From what Ive heard from travellers yep. Apparently a lot of younger people moving to Australia for a better life.
Is it that bad? I thought it was expensive here in Norway....
It is.
the Maori Nation:
Helps when you completely genocide everyone living there to carve out your paradise island.
The maori weren't genocided. We didn't exactly treat them well, but we didn't go that far. They make up 18% of the population, so even if there was an attempt, it obviously wasn’t successful

Oh like what happened in the Chatham islands
Yeah what the Maori did to the natives was fucked up.
LOL all these upvotes from folks with no idea whatsoever, just because it fits the "vibe"....
Māori are party to the founding of New Zealand through te tiriti o waitangi and have had representation in parliament through specific Māori electorates for more than 150 years so it kinda goes without saying that the "Māori nation" is Aotearoa New Zealand as much as it is the "Pākehā nation".

Most of the time new zealand is left in the map
Actually it's Right of Aus on the map 😂

Altho to NZ credit, they're doing better at combating it and their cities are better. but suburban/rural areas are very car centric, if you've seen anything from NZ you'd know this
Suburban and rural areas not being car centric is kinda a European thing. There it's the exception, not the rule
Most of North American, South American, Africa, Asia and apparently NZ are care centric once you're outside of a big city
New Zealand is very car centric because theres 5 million people spread over an area about the size of england on 2 big islands.

Just ask New Zealand about their Opinion on France.
Ask anyone about their opinion on france tbf
They did bomb us..
So they agree with the resz of the world.
They're just the furthest away.
There's the comment I was looking for!
Yeh but everyone lowkey hates the French my dude
Meanwhile, 80,000+ Kiwis leave New Zealand, everyone six months. More than their birth rate. Due to economic factors, such as the weak domestic economy, a lack of high-paying job opportunities, and high housing costs.
High housing costs are the same in Australia. Or anywhere else really.
But not more than the number of people arriving
If you think New Zealand isn't dangerous, or is a pushover, don't forget Homelander is a Kiwi
Hey but so is butcher, the entirety of The Boys is two kiwis having beef
I think memes like these are usually posted by people who dont actually live in the place they are trying to glaze. No nation has 100 percent no beef with anyone.
imagine reddit brings an option of showing where the original account is based of lol like twitter
MAJOR
Switzerland too
Just dont ask them about where they got their gold from
Didn't NZ have beef with France because France did a terror attack on an anti-nuclear organization in NZ waters?
Yup, bombed the Rainbow Warrior, a Greenpeace boat.

Google Phar lap, pavlova and Russell Crowe and say there's no beef with Australia and NZ
Sauce?
Vinland Saga, I highly recommend it
Only TV series that has ever made me cry.
Watch season 3 of master chef then get back to me
I also highly recommend the manga. The anime only covers about half of the story, and no new season has been announced for a while. The manga just ended earlier this year.
Thanks fam
It's an anime that does NOT depict New Zealand.
I figured
Who are they going to beef with? Australia?

But don't they have Sauron to deal with?
Lovely country. They also have some of the most beautiful cricket grounds.
Yeah, also the cricket team is lovely
gotta respect kiwis. they get so much done while being upside down.
No beef but lamb
Don't they have beef with France over the Rainbow Warrior incident?
China has entered the chat.
you can't have beef with other countries if you consider them to be yours
True.🤣
U guys don't have beef with Australia?
Nah Aussies are all good. We like to take the piss out of each other but at the end of the day we don't have beef. Until it comes to sports like Rugby then it's all on.
It's more like sibling bickering than actual beef

Reiner and armin look good here
Two of the most bloodthirsty characters in that show, Vinland Saga.
Season 1, badass Vikings toppling an evil king.. Season 2, farming slave simulator. No idea what season 3 will be, if it even gets made.
too bad its full of rich assholes. 🗿
They have beaf with other mammals like rats instead.
Just dont ask about their opnion on foreigners
Doesn’t new Zealand have a big meth and gang issue?
I guess if you ignore the massive internal conflicts they have. Not picking sides in New Zealand but it's not exactly a Utopia.
Can someone please help me move to new zealand.
It's because no one knows where the hell they are
Beautiful country once outside the major cities, but don't they have a huge housing problem?
new zealand if it existed
its nice being under the protection of the united states military since 84 years ago..
just dont ask about the indigenous lol
For some reason, a lot of Kiwis are leaving NZ for Australia.
New Zealand when cockroaches though...
Gotta love it when people overseas look at the pretty tourist parts of NZ and act all "but it looks so pretty. Why would you want to leave??".
Yeah, the grand canyon looks pretty too, but the US is a shithole right now.
But aint they so isolated geographically from the world? Like don't they get bored lol?
I mean, how are their relations with the japanese after the invasion? That was pretty brutal fighting for a while, like america vs vietnam style.
What? Do you think japan invaded NZ?
Ah my bad mistook new guinea theatre for new zealand
Allgood, the closet the japanese got was a spy sub in a harbour
They only have beef with the indigenous ppl
This post was made by a new zealander
No tf it wasn't.
This post was made by someone who desperately wants to go to NZ because they think the tourist propaganda is the truth of the country.
Any real New Zealander hates France.
they're too busy fighting with wildlife
In New Zealand???? You mean fucking sheep?
Does fucking a sheep count as fighting?
Depends if the sheep is enjoying it or not?
Think you have us confused with Aus. There are zero large predators in NZ, no snakes, no scorpions, and only two spiders that are considered "medically significant" with one of them being an endangered species.
