• No joke, this was my conundrum for YEARS. As a result of my church/cult's indoctrination of guilt, shame, and self-loathing, I couldn't figure out how to reconcile the love I tried to show others with the hate I had for myself. Like, I KNEW I should love others, but didn't know how to love myself. Crazy stuff.

    I'm better now!

I have a very similar story. Glad you healed up.

Thank you, sibling! Hope you're making progress as well!

  • Where did this lie that all evangelicals are hateful come from? Every evangelical church I've been to in the UK was filled with really nice and friendly people.

Sorry, should have specified USA.  In the US, especially in the south, evangelicals often mistake republican political talking points, capitalism, and traditionalist American values for Christianity.  Add a little dash of misunderstanding total depravity and you get some very sad resentful people.

  • Which is why Kants version is better. It correctly centers the other. Do unto others as they would have you do unto them.

idk man, categorical imperative gets you into a lot of sticky dilemmas really quickly.

  • Yup. I'm not a professional quote maker or anything, but I tend to think people tend to share the love they were shown themselves.

Or maybe more specifically... they share the love they want for themselves. Street preachers and sign holders say more about themselves than anyone else.
