This is a long term thing, and he may decide he's not going to ride again. But he's in rehab now after a bad wreck from being hit by a driver. His Tarmac is ruined, though some components are still okay.

Here's the thing. It's a 56, and he's wanted a 58. I had planned to buy him a 58 frame some time this Summer, but realized his 56 is rim brake. I decided to send him one thing at a time to bring him up to disc, knowing he wouldn't be able to use them yet but would enjoy the journey. And then the wreck happened.

He's just reached the point of coming out of the depression that hit. He wants to ride again. He had a TT bike he can ride to learn confidence again if he gets there. He may need another knee surgery, though, and it'll be considered elective and up to me to fund it. He lives on social security and had a Tarmac because I made a bet with him I knew I'd lose on purpose. His pride would not let him just take the bike. That seems to have changed with this wreck.

So, here's what I'm looking for. It doesn't have to be a Tarmac or even Specialized.

  • Carbon fiber.
  • Hydraulic disc brakes.
  • Di2 or similar.
  • Long reach.
  • 36" inseam fit. (I made a mistake here. I'm a woman. I forgot his pants measurements wouldn't be his true inseam.)
  • Similar stiffness and feel to the Tarmac.

He's 6'2" (seems he's shrunk a bit with age) and 78 years old. He's got a degenerative lower spine issue that requires a very stretched out posture with his bars below his seat height. He wanted the 58 because he would me more laid down, but I worry it'll be too tall for him. I'm 5'6" with the same inseam, and a 56 is the tallest I can handle without hip rocking. I don't know how much my much shorter torso affects that, though. A 54 is my largest comfortable size. Stand over matters, of course. My hybrid ebike conversion is a 54 and only gives me an inch of clearance when standing on the ground. My 54 '87 Peugeot gives me a bit over 2".

I'm up for any suggestions, though I will probably have to look at used. $5-6k is about as much as I can swing unless we wait another year. It's also probably the most he'd be okay with me spending all at once. I'd be okay with something that could be upgraded to di2 later to keep the initial cost lower.

  • Hi, I'm 6'1" and 73. I ride frames listed as 57-61. Most newer frames have the sloping top tube that makes them fit a larger variety of heights. Seems like the larger frame will help him stretch out. My 59cm Niner RLT alloy frame measures 52cm to center of top tube. My 58 cm Cannondale Synapse disc is 53cm to center of top tube.

What he really needs is that longer top tube length. I'll look for those.
