That depends entirely on your yarn. The yarn I used (Bernat Blanket Big) says that it is machine washable on low temps delicate cycle. So if you use a different type of yarn, I would check the label to see if it's machine washable and weave your ends in.

Sure! You could make fewer stitches/rows, or you could use smaller gauge yarn and a smaller hook.
