I know, I know.. if I decide to cut my own hair, then I should be willing to accept that there is a large chance that it’s not going to turn out well. And yea, it happened but I think I’m just frustrated with my hair as a whole and not just because of this cut. My hair looks and feels healthy after the cut, which is why I did it. I spent 2years of growing it out cuz I couldn’t afford the $$$ haircuts and was finally fed up with how bad my ends looked. Bought hair cutting shears this weekend and cut it 2 days ago. Pics are my hair this morning. It’s looks extra raggedy now lol
I think the culmination of seeing my hair look so chopped made me snap this morning lol. I’m just so exhausted by my hair with the amount of $$ I’ve thrown at it before (styling products, tools, hair cut $). And when I talked to my friend about it and how I was looking ‘choppy’ she had to say ‘well I wish I had your hair!’ 🤪… I’m pretty upset to say the least. I understand why she says that cuz curly hair can be so beautiful, but for some reason mine has never cooperated with me for the last 32 years. Doesn’t help that I have parents who think I should just brush it out and it will solve all my problems. SIGH!
I guess to end this, does it look like there is anything I can do to fix my hair or should I accept my loss and keep it tied up for the next year or drop $300 for a stylist to look at it? Maybe I need to look up more hairstyles and see if that’ll save me..
Routine: 1. I double cleanse with a clarifying shampoo (raw sugar the deep cleanse) and moisturizing shampoo (dove deep cleanse) then condition with dove intensive repair. 2. After shower I use miss jessies leave in conditioner. After I section and comb out my hair with a touch of combing cream from Lola from rio. 3. After brushing out, I use ouidad vitalcurl+ mousse and scrunch it in. 5. Diffuse and pray
Hi there! I'm a bot, and I've been summoned to help.
If you have not seen our WIKI yet: Please check it out! It's nearly 100 pages full of curated information to help answer all of your curl-related questions. You can use the included Table of Contents (page 2), the side bar, or CTRL-F to search for keywords and help navigate the document.
Reminder: Curl type is NOT your hair type! Whether you are wavy, curly, or coily - you have texture and you belong here. More than that, your curl type doesn't dictate how you care for your hair. To help your curls thrive, we recommend instead using the wiki link above to learn about your porosity, texture, and density.
If this is a photo submission: Please include your detailed routine for your post to remain active! This MUST include the brands of ALL products used, order of application and technique used to apply them, how you dried your hair, and anything else that you might find useful for people to know.
If you received this message in error: Please disregard this comment! I probably just picked up on a keyword in your title.
Thank you. Wishing you many happy, wonderfully curly hair days!

Diffuse and pray. I feel you! Have you tried products or methods to elongate your curls? I think immediately after a cut, we tend to freak out a bit (self cut or sometimes with a stylist). I’d say live with it for a while and then decide if you really need a trim. $300 is crazy! Surely there is a natural hair stylist that doesn’t charge so much? That said, I think your hair doesn’t look as bad as you think it does. Maybe just a few wonky curls but don’t we all have those? I know I do!
My hair definitely overreacts to even the tiniest trim, but it calms down after a week or so. (I swear, if I trim off ½", it will hang at least 2", if not more, shorter than it did just before the trim.)
OP, I'd give it a week or two to settle in before doing anything else. In my case, I will wait until my hair is dry and look to see if any particular curls are consistently hanging longer than the others (like, on more than one occasion); if so, I'll trim those curls. (I've noticed that the hair that grows in certain parts of my head seems to grow faster than the rest, so it's more likely to hang longer.)
I don't think it looks bad as it is, honestly.
Thank you both for the advice! and yeah, $250-350 is pretty normal in my area unfortunately. There's not a lot of stylists who can cut curly hair so the prices get jacked up.
As for letting it settle, I'll do that and see how it is. I didn't think my hair was having any issues at first, but it's the first time in a long time that I got my hair cut so maybe I'm just not used to seeing what I need to see.
Can you show a picture of your hair styled? Or is this how it usually looks?
Did you follow a curly cut tutorial?
Off the bat it doesnt look that bad to me, im assuming this is a day old wash n go?
Besides being put in a ponytail (lol), this is how it looks and yes it's a day old wash n go. I struggle with styling my hair because i get overwhelmed that I keep it at a minimum.
as for a tutorial, it was a combination of several different videos from Manes by Mell, but in particular the 'how to do a professional dry curly hair cut at home'.
I think the cut looks fine, but if you reslly want to drop the money on a curly cut then go for it. Think about your long term hair goals, are you more considering shape over length or both shape and length.
What would your hair goals or ideally what do you want to your hair to look like, id love to see inspo pictures if you have them.
My first goal was to have healthier hair but in terms of what I'd like past that? I think length hasn't been an issue for me but moreso volume and shape.

I think your hair would respond really well to finger coiling!
I tried finger coiling once and was exhausted by the end of it LOL but honestly maybe I should try again and see how it's like
Nah for real it can be a bit like that.
